Planting 1.2 Trillion Trees Could Cancel Out a Decade of CO2 Emissions, Scientists Find

There is enough room in the world’s existing parks, forests, and abandoned land to plant 1.2 trillion additional trees, which would have the CO2 storage capacity to cancel out a decade of carbon dioxide emissions, according to a new analysis by ecologist Thomas Crowther and colleagues at ETH Zurich, a Swiss university.

The research, presented at this year’s American Association for the Advancement of Science conference in Washington, D.C., argues that planting additional trees is one of the most effective ways to reduce greenhouse gases.

Trees are “our most powerful weapon in the fight against climate change,” Crowther told The Independent. Combining forest inventory data from 1.2 million locations around the world and satellite images, the scientists estimate there are 3 trillion trees on Earth — seven times more than previous estimates. But they also found that there is abundant space to restore millions of acres of additional forests, not counting urban and agricultural land.

“There’s 400 gigatons [of CO2 stored] now in the 3 trillion trees,” Crowther said. “If you were to scale that up by another trillion trees, that’s in the order of hundreds of gigatons captured from the atmosphere – at least 10 years of anthropogenic emissions completely wiped out.”

Tree planting is becoming an increasingly popular tool to combat climate change. The United Nations’ Trillion Tree Campaign has planted nearly 15 billion trees across the globe in recent years. And Australia has announced a plan to plant a billion more by 2050 as part of its effort to meet the country’s Paris Agreement climate targets.

And our BC government does this:  “About 17,000 hectares of forest land are sprayed each year, around 10 to 12 per cent of the area replanted each year.”  They spray with Roundup to kill the faster growing deciduous trees, so conifers can grow.

Planting trees is strictly temporary.  Eventually they die and their CO2 returns to the atmosphere as they rot.  That said, the article states it's a tool and as a tool in the tool box it's a fine idea.  There needs to be a more permanent fix for the carbon though.

Some kind of carbon capture is Probably the best bet....Or killing a billion people

A pole flip?

Cuz that only takes a thousand years or so to complete...glad to see you're considering history in a human scale, not a geological scale

I will go plant a tree tho, that's good advice

Well and good lowering emissions and such, but you might as well piss all that effort into the wind unless china and russia both hop on board.

Or we could become global leaders in innovative new technologies that, moving forward, would place us in a favourable position as nations look to purchase new energy solutions.

have you been to Shanghai or Delhi? they have to find ways to reduce emissions if they don't want to choke to death.

Ya this is a disturbing little tidbit that is getting lost in the noise.

They want to fear monger about "Fire Season", what a load of bullshirt. Stop &^@#ing with the forests and let nature take it's course, she is infinitely smarter than us.

I agree on both points completely.

The reason people havent come up with this “new ground breaking energy technology “ is it costs “too much money” for the people that could actually afford it, and if it doesnt cost them much to research you better be sure its costing someone else zeros on their bottom line. Those are the people paying politicians campaign fees.

As far as shanghai and delhi going to choke to death, why arent china and india stepping forward to lead the world into a better age? Dont they need to anyway?

Electric cars with battery recycling facilities, trains and small trucks specifically used for transporting essential goods, and regulated to be the only vehicles allowed to use fossil fuels. Solar panels on houses to supplement electricity. Wind power where viable. Plant more effing trees than we cut down.

My family sold our house in Surrey a couple years ago. There was a 60 year old walnut tree in the back that produced an abundance of walnuts every year. In the front were a line of 30 year old evergreens and a garden. First thing the new owners did was chop down the walnut tree to make an extension on the house. Second, they demolished the front to pave into a parking lot and a basketball court.

All this sheet will solve nothing unless we stop breeding. That, i believe, is the main problem. We are overpopulated. Plant trees. Not your seed.

Well, China and India are doing something.  Guess you missed it.  China is the undisputed renewable growth leader, accounting for over 40% of the total global clean energy mix by 2022.  India has also improved grid integration and addressed the financial issues of its utilities. Because of these factors, India’s growth between now and 2022 is, for the first time, expected to be higher than in the European Union (EU).

Three countries are leading the renewable energy revolution

China, India and the US will contribute two-thirds of clean-energy expansion by 2022.

Good to hear.

How much of the worlds population resides in china and india?

*China has 1.39 billion.

India has 1.34 billion.

Earth has 7.65 billion.

Whats that, a third of the total population of the world in those two countries alone?

Large capital projects typically require public funding. If you consider many of the previous projects in North America, you will see this to be true. And there are legitimate economic reasons for this.

Action is needed, there is public appetite for the investment, and the time to act is now. Moreover, the global position of the USA, and Canada to a lesser extent, has lagged in many key aspects. Scientific education and innovation, heavy industry, technology etc.

This is a brilliant opportunity for the USA to secure an important role globally moving forward with many positive externalities (for a change!!).

Lots.  My post was showing that China and India are doing something regarding renewables.   In many ways they are leading the effort.   In theirs and our best interest.

The facts are that renewable energy is growing.   Britain just went a week without coal power for the first time in over 100 years.  They plan to be coal free by 2025.

Change can and will happen.  Would have happened earlier if there wasn't a concerted effort to lie by mostly right wing think tanks and lobbyists funded by fossil fuel dollars.

Thats all well and good. Very good.

Doesnt change the fact that there are too many humans on the planet.

Technological innovation has really shown that the Malthusian-type arguments are wrong.

For example, there is more than enough food on this planet to feed everyone. Resources isn’t the issue. The distribution of said resources is.

Yup, considering that around 40% of the food here in Canada/US gets tossed in the trash or rots in the fields.   So much food that could feed people ends up not.
