He signed a contract with the NHL and is "their property/asset during the season". Those big bucks don't come without stipulations. He also has an NHLPA weighing in and deciding. He's got to learn some manners before he ventures outward. 2

They are, after all, very concerned with face.

It's not all about "him". That's just it though, that's what the league has been doing too. You don't like have to like Marchand, but it's no secret that NHL players have been wanting back in the Olympics for a while, it's a contentious issue. There have been several players voicing their disappointment and dissatisfaction since the news broke. It's also no secret that the league, and owners, don't seem to want back in because it impacts revenue. NHL had their CBA wants, players want to play. All players? Nah, but the Olympics won't ever be relevant to all players as only the best from each country go. NHL is absolutely pulling having their cake and eating it too crap, Covid or no Covid. They didn't want players going to begin with, now they're getting their wish. I don't have a problem with Canada not going, but if players are willing to forgo being paid to go they've absolutely got a bone to pick with the league and NHLPA.
