Just a reminder the Penguins are currently looking to tear down and rebuild. 25 and under guys aren't untouchable, but it would take a premium to pry most of them away.

1 name that has come up a lot is Sergachev. Will take A LOT to get him from us, but we'd prefer to keep him around as he's part of what we see as our future core.

Konecny has also been discussed lately. Nothing really close to getting done, but things can change in a moment.

We have a trade to announce...

To SJS - Anze Kopitar, John Klingberg, Alexandre Carrier, Curtis Douglas
To VAN - Aleksander Barkov, Carson Soucy, Reilly Walsh, SJS 2025 5th Round Pick

Well this was a tough one to swallow, and I fully expected to raise some eyebrows. We tried like crazy to trade Thomspon all last season to no avail, and at this point we're set on keeping him. But to sign him we couldn't have three franchise centers under contract beyond this year. Between Crosby's age, NMC and questionable playoff status, we knew we wouldn't be able to get fair value for him. So we tried something different.

With this trade we'll free up our cap structure a lot for the following year, needing to sign Toews, Hartman, Thompson and Vejmelka. We were pretty sure '24/'25 was going to be our re-tooling year, but with this move we believe we can extend our contention window another year.

We'll be in a win-win dilemma with Kopitar in that if he has a huge year, we know he won't re-sign to play behind Thompson and Sid, but if he has some regression we might be able to extend him. We also diversified our playoff teams, still having one Panther in Bobrovsky, but added impact players for L.A. and Toronto, two teams whose chances we like to win some rounds.

The San Jose Sharks have signed Jeff Skinner to a 4 year contract worth $24.000M ($6.000M AAV).

@HighOnHockey

Well between the Barkov trade yesterday and this signing today putting us close to 6 million over the cap, we expect to face the ire of the rest of the league. But with Stone's season in question, we wanted to make sure we had some insurance, and after we traded DeBrincat for Stone, we were able to replace him asset-free with what we believe currently to be the better player with better short-term playoff hopes for cheaper. We'll continue casually shopping Wheeler in the meantime, but if September rolls around and Stone is set to play or we're still unsure, we know we have the buyout option.

This also puts us right back into a sticky cap situation for the 2024/'25 season, but with the cap expected to rise significantly next summer, and with Stone and Bobrovsky without trade protection, we're confident we can figure it out when we get there.
