That's the need. It should be the most pressing need addressed this summer, if possible. Stopgap solutions may be the only option if hamstrung by cap restraints, but Hughes, and the entire team, need a true #1 RHD that'll balance out and compliment the elite offense and steadily improving defensive game.

It would be nice, but not likely and is probably overkill in a cap world.  If a team has two high end D, they often split them up to drive two different pairings.

We would probably be just as well off getting a really good 2nd pairing LD.  We need a pairing to take a whole lot of tough minutes.  Adding a top guy to Hughes still doesn’t give you that.  Adding an Edler type guy to a Hronek pairing likely does.

That would make a huge difference.  Hughes doesn’t have to take hard defensive minutes and can go down to 23-25 minutes a game.  He can have a pretty basic partner.

OEL then moves to a 3rd pairing where he can play against lesser opposition and fewer minutes a night and is able to use his actual skillset on the 2nd unit PP.  You can probably trust that 3rd pairing to play solid minutes when they aren’t miscast as shut down guys.

Something like:

Hughes, Carlo

Gavrikov, Hronek

OEL, Lyubushkin

...would be the dream. That's three REALLY solid, 2 way pairs. And probably only fractionally more than what we're paying now.

Here's hoping we can trade for/sign some Carlo/Gavrikov comparables and maybe develop our own "Lyubushkin" (Woo?).

I’m wondering if Woo might push Myers out at camp?

Yep, something like that would be a dream.  It costs us Miller and a 1st at the least probably to turn it into a reality.

We need to escape from a bunch of cap (Myers/Garland/Poolman/Pearson) to make the space and also trade for Carlo.

I'm not sure Carlo would be THAT expensive... Yes, we need to clear some cap first (some of Garland/Boes/Beau/Myers/Poolman/Pearson) but Boston also needs to clear cap and add players as well. They may have to move guys like Carlo (and Forbort), just to fill out their roster.

He might not be that expensive, just like we wouldn't be able to ask much for the guys we need to move.

But we'd have to clear the cap first, which is the tricky part obviously. So unfortunately, we're not likely going to be the lucky team grabbing guys like Carlo for under market trade values and will need to look elsewhere. I'm interested to see how management navigates this over this summer and next year.

Garland is an easy one, we can get assets back for him, although it would make us worst up front.

Myers has one more year.

Poolman and Pearson might be of LTIR value to some teams and will definitely be much easier to move as time ticks away.

Perhaps difficult to move all this summer, but much easier in a year. We just need to chill for a year and show some patience.

Garland is not an easy contract to move if it’s to clear his cap. He’s got negative value. We’d eith need to retain or take back a contract. So we aren’t clearing his whole cap. And adding sugar to that would be costly. Small, slow, wingers who have muffin shots and don’t drive play through the neutral zone aren’t something teams want, unless Benning is their GM.
It’s far more likely we trade Garland straight up for an older 3C who is equally overpaid.

Would be pretty happy with that top 4!

and If that was our D core I’d prefer keeping bear with OEL.

i just think that pairing would be too slow and get burned on dumps/retrievals.

And if OEL is better than what we saw last year I like him and bear as a third pairing should be good.

Carlo wouldn’t be that expensive, getting rid of a bunch of cap would be expensive.

Boeser is probably the only forward with some value. Maybe there is a deal that can be worked out involving Boeser and Carlo

They want to bring back Bertuzzi which already looks near impossible given their cap situation.  They have less than 5M with a roster of 15 - even if they fill out their roster with only league minimum players they wouldn't be cap compliant.
