Another injured player for the Canucks.

Please stay far away. Bear sucked anyway despite some fancy stats metrics due to playing with #43. Enough feeling sorry for players and signing them when we should be looking elsewhere. Give him a one year deal if they want to do some charity but no way this guy should be thought of as future piece. He is not a good defender which is the position we need ... we need big tough defenceman who are good at defending. Bear is not, he's horrible behind and in front of the net and his decision making in his own end is atrocious. He gave up some worse goals than Myers ... the Chaos Giraffe.

Brett Pesce hasn't been a shutdown D-man since the beginning of the pandemic....

He isn't the same type of player anymore.  He typically pairs with Brady Skjei, who at this point is a far more defensive partner.  Pesce's the one who (quietly) drives the offence now.

Most importantly, his production has slowly begun to drop off year after year.  For big, physical defencemen like him, numbers going down before 30 isn't a good thing.  I suspect he'll end up like Tyler Myers, and we don't need more of that.

Pesce played more minutes versus 'elite' competition than anybody else on the team, and in those minutes, had the highest GF% as well at 56.7% (17 scored to 13 against).

The veteran blueliner is also a penalty killing machine, having played the second most shorthanded minutes - only eight less than Jaccob Slavin - on the league's second best penalty killing team (84.4%).

The elite defender on that team is Jaccob Slavin, who I believe will get a small number of 5th place Norris votes.  Pesce is a completely different player now.  He has dramatically improved his offensive production but at the steep cost of sacrificing defence.  And that's totally fine - he is still one of the most cost-efficient players on the team.  But if anyone thinks he is some kind of shutdown stalwart, he's not the one anymore.

Latest I’ve heard is we won’t be qualifying Bear at 2.2 or whatever but would be open to bringing him back for a lot cheaper - which might be the best bet.  If we can get him for about 1 mil on LTIR after the dust settles at the draft / UFA I think that’s a nice bet.

Still set up for a cheap deal next year even if he returns to form and a non issue if he doesn’t.
