Which Leaf defenseman do we want ?

Canucks needs:

a) top 4 righty d-man to play with Edler

b ) young, proven shutdown center (3rd line)

c) someone to play with Kesler

What I'd like to see is a viable multi-player trade: Schenn to Van in Lu deal (just one piece). Then trade him to Philly for Couturier. There has been rumors Holmgren wanted L. Schenn (so both brothers could play on same team). Van gets their young 3rd line shutdown center to play 'Malhotra minutes', Gillis could sign Garrison to play with Edler and they could look at UFA's for a playmaker for Kes. Win win win :)

I'm telling ya, Bozak would satisfy b or c). He is a good two way player, goes to the net, passes, and is young. Him + another prospect (like Kadri) would be doable for the leafs. They fill a big need at the goalie position, and while they do give up some good value, it doesn't kill them since Bozak's shoes can hopefully be filled by others and Kadri, while getting close to playing in the NHL, he still needs more work in the AHL. Canucks get a versatile player with some upside, clear some cap space, and get a prospect who would do well either in the AHL or challenging for a roster spot.

It's win win for both teams.

If we based player's performances on fan perspective, the Sedins would have been dealt long ago. I agree that Schenn probably wasn't as good as Burke tried to make him to be, which put unrealistic expectations for Schenn to succeed. However, I feel like Schenn is just some confidence away from excelling. It is up to him to be a star dman in this league and being on the Canucks will give him the structure to build himself up. Our fanbase will be just as tough on him , but the difference is we are a successful team right now and he could go from a zero to a hero here instantly.

He is an NHL player, so right now, it just depends where in the top 6 he will fit in and where his own play will put him.

We will get atleast one, or the pick in the deal.

Or else 1 or 2 good roster players/prospects.

Boy I love how a month ago any kind of trade with Toronto would have been blasphemy, oh their team is total trash, everyone and everything in Toronto is trash, no way we want or NEED any part of it. Now every other post is about what kind of a "good" trade there can be made with Toronto.

What a bunch of clowns.

Is he really tough? not really

Is he really offensive? not really

is he a shut down specialist? He's a decent defencemen.

Is he a power play specialist? No?

Is he a fast skating defencemen like Ehrhoff or Brian Campbell? No

Does he have? Not even size? MapleLeafs main website, which is the most accurate for player measurements have him listed 6'0 184lbs.

Kids on these boards i guess...

C`mon gais!!! What if Luc Bourdon didn`t get destroyed by a truck while riding his motorcycle and was still alive!1! imagine what our top 4 would look like!! Now imagine what our 4th line looked like if Rick Rypien didn`t suffer from an extreme case of depression and commit suicide!!! Wait gais wait!!! What if Derek Boogaard didn`t get his F*cking head smashed in and didn`t have an overdose and we traded for him!1! imagine our 4th line then!!!

You`re a moron buddy

RIP

I'm sorry do you know something everyone else doesn't? What is the fascination with discussing players like they have already been traded when it is clearly not the case.

And there is no remedy for this stupidity until July. Everyone in the organization can say there is no trade right now till they are blue in the face and everyone will still be here spewing this nonsense.

You know what. We should sign free agent Bryan Allen to pay top 4 with Alex Edler - scrap Leafs Defencemen. Also Sign Justin Schultz (if we can), and trade Ballard just to get him off the books and resign Salo to play with Tanev and or Schultz, keep a Rome or Alberts for depth.

Then let's trade Lou for Bozak and 5th overall pic.

I prefer to get Komisarek and a prospect or two, now that I consider it a little more carefully. Canucks really need to address the back end size and toughness problem. A 240 plus pounder on the back end might help that. If Bieksa goes down for any reason, the team would be woefully exposed. It is not as if we have a line of big d-men kicking down the Canucks door to play, so getting something like this guy on the team will back other teams off our goalie. I am reminded of the Big Buff incident, the Finals last year, and a few others that I will not bother to list. We have a luxury of choice with our defense with regards to skill and mobility, but in gritty games, we are found lacking. With Kassian and maybe one or two other sandpaper guys, we could get past our achilles heel.

Please read the bolded statements from both of your quotes. I didn't bring up Leafs fans being hard on Schenn, you implied it and I agreed. I don't need their disdain to justify my opinion, I formed it by watching Luke Schenn play hockey for the last seven years. I lived in Kelowna when he played for the Rockets and have followed his career because I liked his style. However, he has developed some habits that make him a liability on the backend at a time when the Canucks need stability on the backend more than ever. Toronto fans have nothing to teach me about Schenn. (you might also want to look at what you wrote about Burke as it seems a little contradictory, just sayin).

Different =/= better. I agree that every defenceman makes mistakes, some more than others. Schenn belongs in the "more than others" category. I have no problem with AV as a coach except for a few minor details. He is superior to Wilson in many, many ways. What our team lacks is a defensive coach with a good head for the game. IMO Bowness does not do a very good job, and our defence has suffered for it. If we acquire Schenn, I dont have confidence Bowness has the chops to guide this kid to consistency. And my god, Schenn and Edler on the same pairing would be like a Keystone Cops routine in their own end. You just gave me goosebumps.

I agree that Schenn has positive elements to his game, that's why I like him. He's big, physical and protects his teammates. However, it is my opinion that we need stability and not projects, especially with Salos future in doubt. There are other defenceman to be had that offer similar elements without the risks. I could list my favourites but it would be speculation at best, because odds are they would need to be acquired using asset(s) not named Luongo and I dont know about you but I am getting pretty tired of reading proposals.
