BOSTON (CBS) — The mayor of Boston generated a bit of a buzz with his letter damning Chick-Fil-A and its stance against same-sex marriages, but chances are Bruins goalie Tim Thomas is about to generate a whole lot more.
Thomas, currently beginning his one year away from hockey, posted to his ever-controversial Facebook page on Thursday afternoon, offering support for Chick-Fil-A amid the national debate on the fast food chain.
“I stand with Chick-fil-A,” Thomas wrote. “Chick-fil-A is privately owned by the Cathy family. The company president, Dan Cathy, drew the wrath of gay rights advocates and supporters when he made recent statements that some have alleged are anti-gay.”
Thomas then quoted Cathy, who said he supports “the biblical definition of the family unit.”
“I think we are inviting God’s judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at him and say, ‘We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage,’” Thomas quoted Cathy from The Ken Coleman Show. “I pray God’s mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we would have the audacity to try to redefine what marriage is all about.”
In the past, Thomas has used his Facebook page to offer statements on his decision to skip the team’s White House visit, to explain his decision to step away from the sport for a year and to share historical quotes and passages.
On Wednesday, Boston mayor Thomas Menino drew national headlines for his letter to Chick-Fil-A, in which he wrote, “There is no place for discrimination on Boston’s Freedom Trail and no place for your company alongside it.”
The Chick-Fil-A controversy began after Cathy made his statements regarding marriage. Its intensity grew after the Jim Henson Co. decided to pull its Muppets toys from the restaurant, leading to a social media frenzy to ensue over the past few days.

I guess Thomas was sick of everyone not paying attention to him. What a god damn baby. "Redefining marriage"? Really? Maybe marriage by Christian standards, but marriage is not exclusively religious! :picard:

It's just his point of view. There's probably a billion other people in this world who agree w/ him, but they're not in the news because they're not famous. I disagree with his opinion, but who are we to judge? lol.

Wonder if the NHL is having second thoughts about their 2011 Cup/CS decision yet?

Tim Thomas is just another dumb redneck Tea Party member. Guess what the Tea Party isn't the party of the working man its the party of the Koch brothers who are attempting to purchase the US government (more than it already is) and dumb, ultra religious, socially conservative rednecks are the most easily confused/influenced.

His views are backward to me but it's his right as an American to have them.

Thomas really needs to stop airing his laundry in public if he wants people to stop asking him about it, though.

Thomas aside, Cathy's statement has to make one shake his head....

Yes, you're inviting God's judgement on the nation by allowing two men (or two women) to get married.

For some reason though, God is just fine with 18th and 19th century slavery, the invasion of Iraq, bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Guantanamo Bay, atrocities in Vietnam and the Phillippines...

Well, you can't please everyone. If he said the opposite, other people would be against him. Just because his opinion doesn't line up with your opinion, it doesn't mean that everyone will hate it too and disagree with it.

I agree. There are probably billions of others who take this stance, why should he be condemned for this? He's just saying he supports traditional marriage, and I don't see anything wrong with that. Isn't this whole conversation with gay marriage about equality and rights? I'm not saying Thomas is either right or wrong, but I think he has his own right to say what he wants and do what he wants without being judged for it like this. Not like he's asking you all to join his take on the situation.

Meh, it was more about politics and oil money than anything else. The twin towers would still be down with or without religion. Without religion, they would've used another excuse to cause 9/11.

With a stache like that you think he'd be leading the charge for pro gay marriage.

How in this day and age we can even call same sex marriages "gay rights" is beyond me. To me this is basic human rights, the right to choose who you want to spend the rest of your life with.

I personally think marriage is an outdated institution. Why should I have to be acknowledged or permitted by the government or church to spend the rest of my life with who I want? rather than just spending my life with who I want?
