Just ask yourself this.

If you learn more at the NHL level playing 4th line minutes than in the AHL, Why was Jensen/Horvat/Gaunce/ _____insert prospect here____ sent back to AHL/Junior (to work on there game) and not just kept with the team and put on the 4th line..

Pretty easy...you can destroy a youngsters confidence and his future puuting him a position he can't handle...for the most part on and off the ice the NHL an adult league. The number of youngsters in the NHL is pretty low percentage

Jensen was injured at the beginning of the year. So after healing was sent down to AHL to regain his form back. He was also adjusting game style from Europe's wide ice to Western set up. Horvat also had the WJ to play in as well.

I also think its a vague conclusion to argue the 4th line learning. Some players need to be on the 4th line to learn how to keep energy up. When you are giving under 10 min a game to play. You have to learn how to make each min count. learning to become more consistent.

Also some prospect are NHL ready (everyone has their own opinion on who is ready), Some are not. For those who are, being on the 4th line can still give them experience on many great attributes to their game. As that grows they work up the line up.

Some prospects though are not NHL ready and it would slow or damage their learning curve.

Thats exactly the point i was making. Some prospects need more grooming and development so it's better that they get more opportunity to learn in the AHL, than 4th line in NHL

Simple, no room on the roster. Santorelli had his ticket punched to Utica and thanks to a good training camp he made the squad effectively eliminating the chance of a prospect making the team.

Simple... Sant didn't play 4th line. Your argument was that a prospects development is better served playing on the forth line than going back an improving there games. By this definition Santo didn't beat out Jensen/Shinkaruk/Cassels/Horvat but Sestito and Dalpe did.

theminister summed it up nicely in another thread

"Yeah, I'm pretty convicted that the NHL is rushing players too much. Another year or two of junior is usually a good thing. The cap era is forcing ELCs into the lineup before the player is fully developed. I think marketing has a lot to do with it too.

It's rare that a player doesn't have anything more to learn in junior IMO. The game and psychological aspects are very nuanced.

For example, I think that Dougie Hamilton needed to make the jump because he had done everything he needed to but I think Couturier could have used another year to become a scoring presence. Our cultural obsession with youth is not beneficial to the long term gain."

I'm with you on this one. There's no way I want our offensive upside prospects playing 6 minutes a night with no PP time and occasionally living in the press-box.

If anyone states Santorelli doesn't deserve to be resigned for at least another year or two has clearly not watched this season at all before he was injured. The guy is a spark plug and the dim light that shined in a dark offensive year. He's personally won my vote, I highly believe his injury above most was the reason for such a downfall this season. He was really entertaining to watch.

The great thing about Santo is he definitely faded when he was our legit 2nd line center for 3 weeks straight. in a supplementary 4th line role when Horvat nabs the 3c it will be freaking glorious

Santo had a inspirational season with the Canucks. Many nights he was the best Canuck on the ice.

Unfortunately for him, in the world of professional sport, it only gets him another kick at the can. I

would be very surprised if he gets more than a 1 year deal. He will get a longer look at camp this fall as a result of his season. Who does he have to beat out? He is a very versatile player which garners well.

Santo's future with the Canucks also depends on Linden's and the new GM's view of how the club should move forward. What time line will they move forward with? If I were Santo's agent I would look for the best financial deal available. As a UFA that means a multi year deal if available. Not unlike the choice

that Raffi Torres had to make. A two year deal to move on or a 1 year deal to stay in Van. The older you get the less choice, plain and simple.

Santo was a bonus this year. His unbelievable play until he was injured was unexpected since as many posters have already mentioned, he was on a 2-way minimum salary deal destined for Utica.

Kudo's to him for forcing the team to keep him. I personally thought he was one of this teams' MVP's this year.

But having said all this, and not to take anything away from Santo, but it's a damning indictment of how far this team has fallen when we're talking about how important a journeyman NHLer on a two-way deal is to the team.

I certainly think we should sign him with the expectation that he could find himself in Utica to start the season, and I do hope that he fully recovers from his major surgery and really forces the team to keep him here once again.

Agreed. The rest of the team struggling made Santorelli look better than he really is. We shouldn't re-sign him. His spot should go to one of Horvat, Gaunce or Jensen.

Everyone just tosses out stupid statements. Remember the beginning of the year when we won like 15 or 16 games or something?? Santorelli was playing then... it could be argued we started going downhill after he got injured.

If none of the youth are ready to make the jump, then he should be seriously considered but agree nonetheless.
