Bahaha, "one of the most talented players in NHL history"...

Not even close.

His stick handling ability is more then enough to grant him a title of "one of the most talented players"

Have you even seen Kovalev play?

He clearly hasn't. But I wouldn't bother responding to him anymore pretty sure he's just a troll.

I would think this is one of those reports where player says he wants to come back in gist, he's not really serious about it. Kovalev knows how hard it is to play in the NHL. I doubt he took the reporter's question too seriously. I don't give it much weight.

And if my car had wings and jet propulsion it could fly...but it doesn't, so it can't.

Just like Kovalev...he didn't have the drive, focus, work ethic, & determination to be one of the greatest NHL talents, so he isn't.

Next you'll try and convince me Phil Kessel is one of the greatest NHL talents of all time.

Modern day version would be Alex Semin. Great skillset, extremely talented player with the hands he has, but he obviously does not have the heart or work ethic to succeed in the NHL.

I'm guessing you didn't see him play, lol.

Sorry, but not even a close comparison. Kovalev is the top 5 most talented player of all time and one of less than 100 players to hit 1000 career points. To see people that question or even ridicule his talent is crazy lmao.

I'm talking about if people haven't seen Kovalev play at all or only a bit... Semin comes close in terms of work ethic, drive, motivation, desire, heart, etc.

Fair enough, but still, not really close at all. Kovalev is one of 83 players ever to hit 1000+ career points. Semin isn't even in the league is being cut in his prime, and talent wise, he maybe can eat Kovalev's dust tbh :P

Kessel isn't all that talented now though is he? It's funny because you're trying to contradict something with contradictory reasoning which contradicts itself.

Not trying to start an argument but just shooting down the ridiculous idea Kovalev isn't in the top 5 most skilled/talented players ever. Btw, that video ^ is of him at age 37. I'm just assuming you didn't watch him play much at all to say what you did LOL.

...go to 6:48 mark. The GOAT (Gretzky) applauds him, as do Larmer, Robitaille, and Hull. Imo, he's the most skilled player ever.

Alexei did what players could sometimes pull off in practice in games, effortlessly, and successfully. He was literally dancing around on the ice and did the impossible, smoothly like a hot knife through butter.

about him returning, doubt that, but talent and skill wise, dude, you're way off lmao. Just weird why he never got it together consistently but it's what made him, him. He'd go on long stretches where you wouldn't even notice him on the ice and then respond by potting 20 points in 7 games.

Because of it, he won't ever be considered in that 'all time greats' talk but he's still up there in the top 50-100 all time which is remarkable considering he chose when he wanted to play/all things.

There was a large gap from the 80s to 2000s where 40 year olds rarely played, but recently:

  • Jagr look at him lead FLA this year at 43
  • Recchi at 43 still managed 48 points, a cup and 14 playoff points in 25 games
  • Mark Messier at 43 had 18 goals and was 2nd on his team in points
  • Larionov at 42 had 43 points in 74 games
  • Gary Roberts at 42 was a decent 4th liner, at 41 had 15 points in 38 games and .5 PPG in playoffs
  • Claude Lemieux at 43 took four full years off hockey and was a decent AHL player
  • Andreychuk at 42 was still scoring at .5 PPG and at 41 had 14 playoff points in 23 games
  • Lidstrom at 41 was still an amazing d-man and had a 34 point season
  • Teemu Selanne at 43 had 6 points in 12 playoff games and at 40 years old had a 66 point season
  • At 44 Chris Chelios still had a 12 point/5th defenseman role in Detroit and continued to play minor roles until 48.
  • Hasek and Brodeur both played till 42.

Not saying it's easy but it is possible. Kovy on a 1 year contract would have a lot to prove and with all his skill might be able to contribute as a bottom six PP specialist. Bury him in the minors otherwise (1 year, 900,000 contract).
