OMG Earthquake?

Madness

Recommended Posts

If I was a member of the government, military, or emergency services I wouldn't even know where to begin. There are no procedures in place to deal with a tragedy like this. It is so overwhelming to think of what needs to be done

I guess this is where the human spirit soars though

Tsunami watch issued for Oregon coast

A tsunami watch was issued for the coasts of Oregon, Washington and California as well as parts of Alaska.

A wave is on its way from Japan and is expected to hit between 7 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. -- about 7:05 a.m. for the Washington coast, 7:12 a.m. on the southern Oregon coast and 7:24 a.m. along the California coast, forecasters say.

Early predictions indicate a wave of less than 3 feet.

That could cause low-level flooding, depending on the tides, as well as hazards for boaters, said Bill Steele, a University of Washington seismologist with the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network.

"Stay away from the beach," Steele said. "Be smart about it. The water has a lot of power. Pay attention to your local emergency managers."

from NOAA

The following list gives estimated times of arrival for

locations along the North American Pacific coast from a

tsunami generated at the given source location. The

list is ordered by arrival time starting with the earliest.

Since tsunami speed is directly related to

water depth, tsunami ETAs can be computed independent of

tsunami amplitude. THE LISTING OF A TSUNAMI ARRIVAL TIME

BELOW DOES NOT INDICATE A WAVE IS IMMINENT. The listed arrival

time is the initial wave arrival. Tsunamis can be dangerous

for many hours after arrival, and the initial wave is not

necessarily the largest.

My grandma is in hawaii... does anyone know where i can go to get updates about the tides there?

I have friends on Twitter stating that Tsunami Warnings have been issued for them. He spoke with a friend on the phone.

Taiwan now has issued Tsunami warnings as well...

This is just tragic news, especially after the Canucks win. ( Yes I know it happened during the game.)

The Nikkei and yen have fallen already

HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- Japanese shares and the yen declined as a strong earthquake rocked the northeastern part of the country Friday afternoon. The quake had its epicenter 231 miles northeast of Tokyo, and had a magnitude of 8.9 -- upgraded from an early reading of 7.9 -- according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The benchmark Nikkei Stock Average (JP:NI225 10,254, -179.95, -1.72%) ended 1.7% lower at 10,254.43, taking a steep fall in the closing minutes of trade after the temblor was reported. The Japanese yen also lost ground, with the U.S. dollar(USDYEN 82.7600, -0.1600, -0.1930%) jumping to 83.27 yen, compared with the day's low at 82.75 yen and 82.92 yen the previous day.

Not that it should be a concern right now. Saving lives is the most important concern
