St.Louis is the PERFECT example of how to build a successful franchise

Remind me... when was the last time the Vancouver Canucks drafted in the top 5? Oh, wait... we haven't done so in almost fifteen years. And the two players we drafted in the 2nd and 3rd spots ended up being franchise players, just like the Hawks and Penguins, proving that we can be just like those other franchises, if given a barrel full of fish and a shotgun.

But since when is St. Louis a model of a successful franchise? They've won ONE playoff series in the last decade.

Over the last decade, Vancouver has been amongst the most successful franchises in the game. They have two President's trophies, a Finals appearance, and six division titles in eight years. But it would appear as if that time is coming to a close. Unfortunately, Detroit's lucky streak (no matter how you cut it, it's lucky to pick up Lidstrom, Datsyuk, and Zetterberg in the 3rd 6th, and 7th rounds) has made it seem relatively easy to retool on the run. It's not. Constantly drafting at the end of every round means you're always taking a stab in the dark. Detroit (now that Dats and Z are leaving), San Jose, and New Jersey are also in the same boat.

What you seem to be forgetting about teams like Chicago, St. Louis, and Pittsburgh is that they all SUCKED, to the point where they were gifted franchise players in the draft. Are you really that jealous of them? Not to mention, Vancouver has had some pretty bad luck. The two best prospects we've drafted, since the lockout, aren't here anymore. One suffered a nebulous injury in dryland training that went undiagnosed and caused a rift with management. The other went head-on into a semi truck.

In the new NHL, team success is usually built around youth and pedigree, with ELC's. In order to build a good team, you gotta build through the draft.. when i look at them, and compare them to us.. it shows how poorly we've been managed.

For example, through scouting, and development they are set for awhile.. just look at these examples.

David Backes - 28 years old; $4,500,000 Until  2015-16

TJ Oshie - 26 years old; $4,175,000 until 2016-17. Just entered first season of new contract after his ELC. During his entry level years he combined for 120 points.

David Perron - 24 Years old; just started new contract worth 3,812,500 until 2015-16.

Check out these stats, he's not a superstar, but these are his first 3 season. Right out of the draft.

2007-2008 St. Louis Blues NHL 62gp 13g 14a 27pts

2008-2009 St. Louis Blues NHL 81gp 15g 35a 50pts

2009-2010 St. Louis Blues NHL 82gp 20g 27a 47pts

Consider that, they have a core group of Backes, Oshie, Perron, and then add on to that in your forward core you have Berglund (RFA), Stewart and Tarasenko (2010 draft pick, we traded our first rounder with grabner for Ballard).

Additionally, you can't forget the young d-men in Shattenkirk and Pietrangelo. Both are due pay raises, but these are top d-men in the league. 24, and 23 years old respectively. Plus, Halak isn't old, and Jake Allen is looking like a pure young goalie.

Now that you've read that, i'm gonna sum up our core as it stands right now..

Daniel and Henrik Sedin- 32 years old both combining for 12.2 Million. Money well worth it for the players we're getting, but contracts are coming up. - Our highest picks ever.. but that was in 1999

Ryan Kesler - 28 years old at 5 Million per year.

Booth - We know this story..

Burrows - signed for 4.5 Million a year until he is around 36/37 years old.

That's a combined 25.5 Million. For 5 Players, and that's without touching the Defense.. and goaltending.

Since 2004, our most profitable draft in recent memory giving us Schneider, Edler, and Hansen, we have drafted Grabner (gone), Patrick White (lol), Hodgson (gone), Jordan Schroeder (so far, a work in progress after 3 years still). Recently we have drafted Gaunce and Jensen, who show some promise.. but as far as our future goes.. if you think it's gonna better through a blockbuster move.. you've got another thing coming.

Boston, LA, Chicago and Pittsburgh have proven that teams that go far are built through youth and drafting well.

just food for thought. the future doesn't look that great.

The point of this thread is that weve been mismanaged. Getting to the finals had little to do with a team gillis built , aside from ehrhoff

Perfect might be the wrong word, but theyve spent very wisely and made themselves solid for now, and the future.

I wouldn't say you're trolling, but I also wouldn't say you're realistic. More like frustrated and over-reacting.

You can't waste cap, btw. If you don't have better options to spend it on and do nothing instead of at least trying something, then that could be wasting it. Bringing in players that haven't worked out is only wasting the owner's money, not the cap, however.

The Blues have built a good team, that's true, but they've done it after being very bad for awhile. All that time the Canucks were good so they couldn't get 1st overall draft picks. St Louis did: 2 top 5 including the 1st overall, 2 top 15 and 1 top 20 in a five year span. They've done well with that, but will they continue to draft well as they have picks around 25th overall? Will they be able to build the next team while making moves to try and win with this one?

The Canucks were in the Blues' place a decade ago, coming off a number of bad seasons and decent draft picks. They've since built a team that will compete every year - or a team that should be competing. Having to compensate for something like the death of one of our top prospects has set us back, as well as some drafting before Gillis that wasn't that great.

There's nothing to suggest the Blues won't have the same issues as they compete each and every year for the next decade (assuming they do).
