Cam Cole (Vancouver Sun) RIPS Mike Gillis and Canucks to Shreds - Defends Alain Vigneault

Recommended Posts

Whatever clarity Gillis had, concerning this team when he was hired, is now long gone. He can't see the forest through the trees at this point. We can't draft and we can't trade, makes it pretty tough to get ahead.

I hate how people keep saying it's the end of an era. How is 4 years an era? Cause really that's all it's been since we have been a top team with a chance to win the cup.

And to say that we have no future because the cupboard is bare is ignorant. Not enough fans or media even know about our prospects cause they don't bother following them. Pretty much if they're not top 5 picks nobody talks about them.

And then guys like Tanev and Corrado come out of nowhere, and it just goes to show that the media really doesn't know anything about these guys.

It is the end of the era (and it was a good one I will miss it). I do believe mis-management of assets led to this sharp demise. There should be a cleaning this spring and a short re-tool/build.

No respect whatsoever for this kind of blame game.

And Cole completely lost me at calling Roy a "Smurf" - it's one thing for posters on CDC to use those kind of denigrations, but a "journalist" imo who needs to resort to that kind of cheap name calling is pretty pathetic.

In case he never noticed all three of the other Canuck centers, Henrik, Kesler and Lapierre, are all 6'2" and a combined weigh in at about 600lbs...

Roy was one hell of an acquisition. The Canucks could have used an additional center with a shutdown and faceoff specialist edge, but it's easier said than done to snatch one at a reasonable price.

Anyhow nothing makes me laugh more than suggestions that the team is done, the era is over, the window is closed.

The same thing's been said about San Jose, for a few years running.

Not a huge AV fan but will defend him a bit he gets way to much heat from the fans, MG is totally the guy that should be fired and regardless AV is gone with him anyway. AV works with the team he is given, it's the GM's job to find the right mix, the writing was on the wall last season they needed scoring wingers, they needed a center, they needed to trade a goalie, those are the top 3 things they needed to address before the season started instead MG went out and landed another 4.5mil dman! signed Raymond for scoring and had no center and a 5million dollar back up. Plus everyone knew Ballard would get limited ice time so right there before the season even starts you have 9.5 mil tied up in assets you don't need plus no center.

Picking up Roy was much better than Keith Carney, eric Weinrich and Mikka Noronen moves of our previous GM. I swear the media and fans in this town don't deserve a successful team. Everything gets torn apart.

I don't drink the Canuck kool-aid but i don't fire every one or trade everyone the minute we hit a rough patch. Gillis is as responsible as Av for the current state of affairs but I think its' pretty premature to talk firing.

There will be changes

I've had this thought a few times this season... the roster just isn't good enough to be part of the "elite" - good enough to make the playoffs and with some bounces and stellar goal tending they might have made a run - but by no means favorites to go anywhere.

That being said, I won't be surprised if they let AV go this offseason, but you'd be a fool to expect a cup run just because Lindy Ruff is at the helm.

Gillis has done a terrific job, he just doesn't seem to be much of a hockey guy. Odd since he played himself once upon a time. He would have made a fantastic President or Asst GM or would have fit in great somewhere else in the front office, but I am starting to feel it is very important to keep him away from hockey related decisions. Everything else, the guy is gold, he is as good as it gets.

I think AV has also done a terrific job, but as has been mentioned, after 7 years things get stale. Its time for him to move on, better for him, better for the Canucks. He will have a lot of success as an NHL coach for a long time.
