"Nobody has been able to shut down the McDavid kid,” Oshawa coach D.J. Smith said. “He’s running through our league like nobody has done before.

It’s going to be Cole’s job. We’re going to get him out there as often as we can against McDavid. It’ll be up to the two (defensemen) on the ice, too, obviously, but that’s Cole’s matchup in this series.”

McDavid is 18 yearts old. Cassels is 20 years old. On to of that Cassels plays on a stacked team. Every one needs to calm down a bit.

Cassels will need a couple of years in the AHL before he even makes the NHL let alone being the difference between winning and losing a Stanley Cup playoff series while shutting down Mcdavid.

McDavid is also a generational talent. Just to put a little perspective to what Cassels successfully did and the magnitude of it, McDavid will be in the NHL next year burning veteran NHL players with years of experience, and yet this kid who just turned 20 was able to almost completely shut him down, and put up monster points himself. I'm not saying it wasn't a group effort, but Cassels was undoubtedly the most significant factor.

Cassels has been great but its a team effort.

Calgary Flames prospect who helped shut down Connor McDavid now sets sights on even bigger prize

“In the last series, our role was to shut down Connor McDavid,” said the 19-year-old Smith, a towering right-winger selected by the Flames in the second round of the 2014 NHL Draft. “We put that as our first priority. We had to sacrifice a bit of our offence, but in the end, nobody is going to be able to take that championship away from us so it was completely worth it.

“In eight years or even five years, (McDavid) could be the best player in the world, and we’re always going to be able to say we shut him down. We only gave him one point in three games in our building, and that’s when we had our matchups that we wanted. That’s something to be proud of.

“It didn’t come easy, but it just shows that if you have the team depth, one player can’t really beat you.”

I've watched the Gens (and Soo and Otters) all year. I love Mermis and Brown. They're good, hard-working guys but they aren't terribly talented. A 6th rounder and a guy whose been undrafted the last 2 years. Yes it's a team effort but a bunch of scrubs aren't going to shut down the next Crosby. The right pieces have to be there and even DJ said that shutting down McDavid was Cole's job.

Stop raining on people's parade.

I agree. The "Gens are stacked" comments came after they won their Erie series. SSM were the "stacked" team and the favourite to win.

Gotta give credit to DJ Smith...preaching good defense gets you offense...they are suffocating the Rockets holding them to just 6 shots so far.

So very true, having guys like Jenner and Laughton before Cassels to model himself after has been a great steady influence on his game to be thorough in every part of his game.

Yeah, what a team-first guy. Way to turbocharge the bandwagon!
