[Report] Ilya Kovalchuk Retires From NHL

Recommended Posts

This will answer most people's questions:

Cap recapture is not going to be that bad because they've saved only $3 million against cap so far with the structure.

Devils will be charged $250,000 vs. cap for each season through 2024-25 as the cap recapture penalty.

Devils do not have to pay Kovalchk if he's retired. Can void his contract once he officially retires.

Of course, Devils still have to give up first-round pick in 2014 for being found guilty of cap circumvention.

I'm disappointed that the cap recapture penalty is so small for them.

But he has so many years left on the contract, and the Devils have so far only received 3 mill in cap advantage because the first two years of his contract, his salary was less than his cap hit, that the penalty is basically nothing considering the cap will go up too.

in regards to that pick, if say they trade it would that team be able to forfeit their own pick (ie say chicago trades their late 20s pick for NJs 1st) and use new jerseys if its a top 5/10 pick or is it like that pick doesn't exist at all? cause if they made a deal they would technically still be forfeiting a '1st' round pick just not the new jersey one
