-Vintage Canuck-
This will answer most people's questions: Cap recapture is not going to be that bad because they've saved only $3 million against cap so far with the structure. Devils will be charged $250,000 vs. cap for each season through 2024-25 as the cap recapture penalty. Devils do not have to pay Kovalchk if he's retired. Can void his contract once he officially retires. Of course, Devils still have to give up first-round pick in 2014 for being found guilty of cap circumvention. https://twitter.com/TGfireandice
canucklax
So who does their 1st pick go to? Or is the first round only 29 players than?
AK-47
damnnn, one of my favourite players retired. Hope he keeps playing hockey though, would love to see him in KHL and the Olympics
Where's Wellwood
I'm disappointed that the cap recapture penalty is so small for them. But he has so many years left on the contract, and the Devils have so far only received 3 mill in cap advantage because the first two years of his contract, his salary was less than his cap hit, that the penalty is basically nothing considering the cap will go up too. DeNiro
So do they blow it up now then? They're already rumored to be moving a defenseman. This is not good for Schneider. He's gonna have to stand on his head even more.
Alex Burrows 14
And people wanted us to take nichuskin. I bet dallas is freaking out right now
Tangelos
wow sad day for the NHL but mostly for the New Jersey Devils. Losing an all-star talent in Kovalchuk is a huge kick in the nuts. Was one of my favourites too. I feel bad for the Devils, they just can't catch a break.

KillerClown
WOW absolutely crazy this has been one of weirdest off seasons ever. Wonder if Jersey will go after a guy like Raymond or Gerbe now could add a little offence
Sidney Crosby.
Wow! Wonder if those Canuck fans pumping Valeri Nichushkin tires will still be kicking around?
Where's Wellwood
I wonder if the Devils forced Kovi to retire now before the cap recapture penalty becomes terrible for them.
Brocklovich
in regards to that pick, if say they trade it would that team be able to forfeit their own pick (ie say chicago trades their late 20s pick for NJs 1st) and use new jerseys if its a top 5/10 pick or is it like that pick doesn't exist at all? cause if they made a deal they would technically still be forfeiting a '1st' round pick just not the new jersey one
TheCammer
This certainly will further effect the reluctance of GM's to use draft picks or spend gobs of money on Russian players.

BI3KSA-
Awful loss for the NJ Devils and the NHL in general. Leaving the NHL at only 30 years old...
