RAMBUTANS
To be able to compete in today's cap market, MG needs to think out of the box. He should hire an economist who is good in statistics. Not necessarily a hockey guy but it will help. Then the guy should look for players that are much cheaper than today's Canuck superstars that can simulate their output in groups. No-name, amateurs or has-beens that are collectively good in particular aspects of the game. After this, trade the Sedins, Kesler, Hamhuis, Garisson, Luongo and the other stars for high picks. There will be some growing pains but this idea will ensure Canuck domination in the long run.

Erik Karlsson
Can't trade the twins, aren't they UFA after this season? But if the team fails in the playoffs bad again I agree about trading a lot of our core.

TOMapleLaughs
Replace our good players with other teams' castoffs? This would be needed if our cap was artificially lower and we wanted to tank. Not the time to do that though.

shinkaruk98
What's the point, lose all our good players for picks who may pan out or bust.
rawkdrummer
"After this, trade the Sedins, Kesler, Hamhuis, Garisson, Luongo and the other stars for high picks." Apparently you missed out on the fact that Lu wasn't going to bring us any high draft picks. BTW, I actually enjoy watching these players play in our colours and I don't want to wait 5 years for the Canucks to be a team worthy of watching again according to your plan. RonMexico
You can't apply the Moneyball strategy to hockey like you can baseball due to the nature of both games.
The Lock
Wait a minute. Isn't this precisely what they have already done with this roster for the last 3-4 years? Only problem is once those "cheaper, no-name, amateurs or has-beens" contracts expire, Gillis and Gillman have been paying them like superstars and expecting them to perform as such. khay
To win championship you need both money and moneyball strategy (lol). Oakland A's were good in the regular season because they were built to do well over the long run (162 games in the MLB). But they never won a championship. In fact, I don't think they made it out of the first round much -- maybe just once. The Boston Redsox on the other hand, made moneyball signings whilst signing big name players that can provide difference in the clutch. The result? Two championships after 100 years of drought. Santorelli, Richardson, Torres, Lappiere, Hansen, Lain, Higgins, these guys are Gillis' moneyball signings. What we need is opposite of what you say, we need one or two more superstars with game breaking abilities. Also for the Sedins, Kesler, Hamhuis, and Garrison, they have already taken paycut to sign here, you want to trade them? Betray their loyalty?
