-Vintage Canuck-
Will he get $6 million like Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle?: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins‘ agent Rick Valette is kicking off contract extension talks with Edmonton Oilers GM Craig MacTavish and assistant Scott Howson, TSN’s Ryan Rishaug reports. To little surprise, there’s no word regarding what kind of term or salary is being discussed (it’s early, after all). The 20-year-old forward is entering the final season of his entry-level contract. It’s believed that he won’t be able to play in the team’s season opener and may need to rehab into November. Whenever the top pick of the 2011 NHL Draft is healthy, he’d have much to gain in proving that he can handle an 82-game workload, as the jury’s still out on whether his frame can handle the wear and tear. Nugent-Hopkins missed 20 games in 2011-12 and was limited to 40 contests in 2013. Picking comparable contracts could be the trickiest part. Valette would likely trot out RNH’s teammates Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle, two young standouts who are carrying $6 million cap hits. The Oilers would probably counter with Sam Gagner and David Perron‘s contracts, if not Nazem Kadri‘s bridge deals. Regardless, the Oilers are wise to try to get something done soon while continuing to lock up the young core that still has fans excited about Edmonton’s future. http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2013/09/16/report-oilers-talk-extension-with-nugent-hopkins/
rawkdrummer
Don't do it RNH, it's Edmonton. Come back home as soon as possible.

metroneck
There is no doubt RNH has talent but, for whatever reason, durability has already been an issue. I'd say 2 year bridge. $3mill range?

mbal23
They're already spending 42.5mill this year for forwards, maybe they should trade him for some defense

Warhippy
Its Craig MActavish now not Tambellinni. I doubt MacT gives him the $6 million or even $5 million, He will get about $4 maybe $4.25 million (slap in the face after Hall and eberle of course) and then they'll have to deal with Yakupov and Nurse. Monty
Trying to think of something clever to say about him negotiating to stay healthy during his time in Edmonton; alas, nothing coming to mind.

-Vintage Canuck-
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Oilers close in on new deal: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins can’t play any games right now, but that doesn’t mean he can’t sign a new deal that will guarantee he plays many more games with the Edmonton Oilers. The centreman, who is recovering from shoulder surgery, is closing in on a new deal. RNH’s agent, Rick Valette, spent some time at Rexall Place on Monday and was seen in the stands with Edmonton GM Craig MacTavish, along with Scott Howson, the Oilers’ senior VP of hockey operations. The two sides have been discussing the possibility of a new deal for Nugent-Hopkins, who is set to become a restricted free agent this summer when his entry-level deal runs out. “What kind of deal?” is the big question. Will it be a short-term or long-term one? If you follow the Oilers’ plan for their young stars, negotiations should end with a multi-year, multimillion-dollar contract. It’s the approach Edmonton decided to take with both Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle. Hall signed a seven-year deal at $6 million per season, while Eberle went for six years at $6 million per. With those kinds of contracts already in place for the nucleus of the team, Nugent-Hopkins could be interested in following suit with his sometime linemates. The bar has been set with the Hall/Eberle contracts, and while RNH could theoretically get a longer deal, it’s not expected he would get more than $6 million per season. Hall proved his worth last year by finishing in the top 10 in scoring with a 50-point season, while Eberle did it the season before when he was the team’s top scorer with 76 points. The 20-year-old Nugent-Hopkins has been practising but isn’t expected to play a game until possibly Nov. 1. An injured shoulder has been the only hangup in the youngster’s game. The No. 1 pick in 2011 appeared to be on his way to a Rookie of the Year trophy until a bad shoulder cost him 20 games and the award went to Colorado’s Gabriel Landeskog. Last season the recurring shoulder problem had to be eventually fixed, but not before Nugent-Hopkins played in 40 games and scored 24 points. The wait on contract details could be resolved very soon. No major issues are expected in negotiations, which means Nugent-Hopkins’ contract could be completed in the next few days. http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/edmonton-oilers-ryan-nugent-hopkins-closet-o-new-contract/

DeNiro
Schultz, Nugent-Hopkins, and Dubnyk will all be due for big raises next season. Yakupov the following year. They're definitely not following the Blackhawks model. Too many players making too much too soon.

D.Doughty
i think he gets a bridge contract. Has not done enough to warrant a big boy 6 mil contract. Sign him to a 2-3 year contract 3.5-4 mil and if he has proven himself to be a top centermen in the league, he gets 7+ mil and laughs at Eberle and Hall
