Memo to: (insert somebody in Canuckland)

yes we can nucks

This is the thing. We've beaten a few weak teams lately. But the standings still show we're outside of a playoff position. I'm worried about the team down the road with this roster. They simply haven't been able to score enough goals against the good teams. Nashville was missing their starting goalie and best dman and we struggled to win. Have people already forgotten our losing streak when we could only score one goal per game? If nothing is changed, I don't see how they'd go anywhere in the playoffs. Why this doesn't seem to concern people baffles me.

And why do people jump all over me for saying 'it WILL be an early exit'? I put a rider on it... I said 'IF'. When has it been wrong to make a prediction? You all have predictions, don't you? You may not like my prediction but I'm entitled to it.

Your rider "IF" was on the making the playoffs part NOT on your prediction of the outcome of making the playoffs. However, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, conversely people are entitled to disagree with your opinion, otherwise this would be the Canucks blog not the Canucks forum. I like to see the positive force in action although the negative's can be a bit more entertaining.

Memo to OP: Gillis can't just make great trades at will. I suspect he has a much better idea of what's needed and the price than anyone here and doesn't need to be told over and over again. If there were a decent trade out there that didn't gut this team, there is no reason to think he wouldnt do it. There simply aren't that many key players available: no teams are making these trades even though there are teams with more need than Vancouver. If you truly think that he has trades on the table and is just opting not to do them, that's your prerogative, but I don't believe it.

Like trading our third best scorer for someone who's playing on the fourth line?

Did you read everything I said before I said 'even if they squeak into the playoffs, it will be an early exit'? I talked about my concern about the lack of scoring. So my implication is that if they make the playoffs, it will be an early exit if things don't change. I didn't think I had to spell it out.

For sure I know this is a forum and there will be differences of opinions. I didn't attack anyone who disagreed with me, I only questioned people attacking me for my 'prediction'. That is after all, my opinion.

I seemed to have hit a nerve with my Kes comments. I want to make it clear I love the guy. He's a key to this team's success. When he scores, the team usually wins. Yes, he's scored lately. But he's done it by going in the 'dirty' areas as I said... in front of the net, in the slot. All I'm saying is it drives me crazy when he's entering the zone and he tries to stickhandle through 2 or more guys. Yeah, do it when the opening's there, but that's not the case. I haven't seen him score yet this season on this kind of play. Often, the better play would've been to pass the puck and look for the return. Just an observation and yes, MY OPINION.

Here's what Gillis would say back to you.

Memo to Mike Gillis:

It's time to stop imitating Stand Pat Quinn and to make one of your 'bold moves' Booth has been injured and gotten very little time to play at 100% otherwise we wouldn't be having this discussion. It's been obvious for the last couple of seasons that this team needs secondary scoring During my time here we have consistently had one of the strongest offenses in the league. It's painful watching the current roster outworking the other team most nights and not being able to put the puck in the net. Bless them for trying but outside of a few guys, they just haven't got the skill to do it. Unlike other teams we haven't had the privlege to draft 1st overall. We're at the lower half of the league in scoring Check again we are in the top 10 and have been at or near the top for nearly every year since I got here., our powerplay is one of the worst We have scored in 7 straight games and have consistently been tops in the league. We're terrible in shootouts There are very few shootouts throughout the course of a regular season and our players have made a concerted effort to improve in this aspect of the game. It's going to be a serious challenge just to make the playoffs . Even if we squeak in, it'll be an early exit again. This team has the toughest travel schedule in the entire league and with that we have an increased chance of injuries. We have had more injuries to our key players than many of the teams we are competing with.

The team needs a boost now Our only chips are one or more of our dmen, our only position of strength. Yeah, it might hurt a little, but you have to give somebody good to get somebody good back. Our priority now is more scoring. To make an impact the trade would have to involve multiple players. Don't wait. Do it soon so the team has the rest of the season to rebuild its chemistry heading into the playoffs. You have no idea what goes on behind the scenes no idea what it takes to make a fair deal in this league. If you did you would never be making such statements. People wouldn't make any of these statements if they knew what really happened with the Hodgson trade. Most teams are at or near the cap which makes it very difficult to get the right deal. As I have said previously if a deal comes along that makes us a better team I will consider it.

Its very easy for people to criticize me sitting from the outside of the circle but that doesn't mean that they know whats going on in the inside. I understand that we in this market wants success in the playoffs but its a process and it takes time.

If MG were here to reply to you I am pretty sure he would say something like that.

I've got no issues with the team's accomplishments so far under Gillis. I was talking about nothing being done to address the team's obvious deficiency the past two seasons that resulted in early exits from the playoffs... the lack of secondary scoring. And I'm saying if nothing is done to address this, it will be another early exit.

I don't disagree - but I do bleieve that doing something to address the issue is actually extremely difficult

Memo to CDC:

It's one thing to criticize players but another to downright treat them like the haters from other team's fans do.

Please ban all haters from CDC.

That includes people who say things like "Luongo flops like a beached whale" - that's not criticism, that's hate.

Signed....real Canucks fans.

By your logic because I laughed at pics of beach balls going past Cloutier and a cartoon of a golfclub instead of the stick in our logo I am not a fan?

In '82 I was 12 and knew we had no chance, in '94 I went to the can so nobody would see a grown man cry after a hockey game. 2011 is a soul-wound.

Say "Kid couldn't check a suitcase, but whoopee can he shoot the puck" about any Canuck = not a fan in your world

No...that's not how I meant it to come out - I'm talking about the haters on here - not those that can laugh and shrug off our misfortune.

Heck - I had a paper bag over my Avatar for a while because the team was doing so poorly - but that's different than hate.

I suggested a Hoover for our logo once as well.

Even Luongo laughs at himself...

I'm taking about the constant berating, the never letting go...I won't name names but the users who I'm talking about know who they are.

Some people aren't happy unless they aren't happy. Let the haters wallow in their negative energy.

Memo to MG, it feels like 90% of CDC are dyslexic, bi-polar schizophrenics with amnesia. Please bring us a cup and help start the healing.

Memo to Kes,

Great to see you scoring again. Hope you can keep up the beast mode without hurting yourself again. But please... stop imitating Pavel Bure, trying to split the defense with your stickwork. More often than not, you lose control of the puck and a chance is wasted. It would be more effective to use your linemates. Since there are two guys on you, somebody's open. Then go to where you get most of your goals... in the dirty areas in front of the net. Also, work on bringing back your patented wrist shot.

Memo to Kes,

You have 4 goals in 2 games. You are flying all over the ice and look like the Kesler of old. But please stop what you are doing and listen to the OP. Thankyou Kes. We will forgive you this time but please dont let it happen again.

Rather keep things on a positive roll and I question this.

So what's Kes doing wrong again? Scoring? Oh yeah, problem there. I don't care if he's imitating Barney, as long as he's finding ways to crash and bang that puck into the net, he can skate down there like Stars On Ice.

"Even if we squeak in...it'll be an early exit"

I think we need fans who don't imitate fortune tellers. But I'll let this fly (for now), even though I suspect trolling. Let's see how you respond to people.

Here's my contribution:

Memo to Canucks fans: nothing says your ideas will work (any better). The team wants to win and, especially when they finally are finding ways, let's support them in that. Let's not criticize guys who are putting up goals because they aren't "sharing". We gripe when they don't score, then when they do? Seems a little unfair.

Deb, I assure you I'm not trolling. The Kes thing I've noticed for a while and was my pet peeve. Yes, he's scoring now and I love it. I hope he sustains it. But I'm saying if he uses his linemates more, there'd be more quality scoring chances. I realize my timing isn't great to bring it up but I had to say it.

Re the 'early exit', I think it's a legitimate concern, not only for me, but for a lot of fans. Lack of scoring has been a problem in the last two playoffs, resulting in early exits. Nothing has been done to relieve my concerns. As I said, we're at the bottom half of the league in scoring, we can't score on the power play (though there's been some improvement lately), and we can't score on shootouts ... which can be costly in the end.

Let's see what others think of this concern and its consequence of an early exit.

I'm puzzled by your suggestion of my trolling. It's a legit concern.

Bump.

Obviously Mike Gillis did not get my memo. I posted this back in early December before their hot streak. They were winning at the time because of great goaltending. My concern was that they didn't have enough depth to get out of the first round of the playoffs, and Gillis was doing nothing. It's even more obvious now. You don't need a crystal ball to see it. The situation is worse now due to injuries and burnt out core players because of Torts habit of overplaying them.

As I said back then, it was a legit concern. It stung to be accused of being a troll. But I feel vindicated now.

Memo to Mike Gillis:

It's time to stop imitating Stand Pat Quinn and to make one of your 'bold moves'.

:picard:

In 1987, Quinn immediately traded Patrik Sundstrom for Kirk MacLean and Greg Adams.....giving the team a very solid center/winger and a very good starting goalie for a decade.

1991, he dealt Garth Butcher and Dan Quinn for Courtnall, Ronning, Momesso and Dirk. A trade that vaulted the team a considerable distance.

1994, he took an obstinate Craig Janney and moved him for Jeff Brown and Bret Hedican, 1/3 of a D corps that went to within 1 game of the Stanley Cup. Nathan Lafayette also came in that deal.

1995, he dealt Mike Peca for the uber-talented Alex Mogilny.

No, no. Quinn had the balls to make big trades. He took chances when he deemed it beneficial to do so.
