He's not top-5. NHL CS has him below Kapanen for euros and Kapanen is certainly top-5.

Nylander scored all of his points in that tournament against ultra-weak competition in blowouts, and on the power play. Against decent competition in his own age group he did nothing, and was a total non-factor against Canada.

He looks like a pretty powerplay specialist. I don't think he's top-10, let lone sixth. Besides, the Canucks will pass on the girlie-looking Swedish Coho if they know what's good for them.

Do you like Sportsnet ? Or do you hate all hockey broadcasting companies? I'm just curious.

Also discrediting someones abilities based on their appearance is very revealing about a persons character. It should not be tolerated on these boards.

The debate around the draft should really be about what model or hybrid model are the Canucks heading. Where is hockey today and what bring success. The two teams in my mind is Chicago and Boston. The Chicago model is tough to follow because quite frankly they depended on years of bad hockey and there for access to great draft selections ( Kane and Toews ). On the other hand Boston did manage to build a team without bottoming out and on a few good trades ( where would Boston be without Chara or the trade that brough them Seguin and Hamilton )

So it's a toss up you either play crummy and risk fan loss to get high picks or you go the Boston route and try and build as you go.

Assuming you prefer the build as you go route...what has the Boston model been founded on. Well obviously trades, which point to better than average Pro Scouts ( Vcr must be tone of the worse ) to. They have also leaned ( pun intended ) on size and strength. From what I've read Linden also has reached the same conclusion. So now not only do you decide to draft that way you need to go through the orgainzation piece by piece to enable this to happen. List your emphasis check to see if you have the peices ( under management and scouts )) to achieve this and in the next year put it into place

Hey Presto

Virtanen is ranked above Ritchie and well above Ehlers even in this puff wheat list here:

http://thehockeywriters.com/nhl-draft-war-room-nhl-central-scouting-final-rankings-combined/

This combined NHL rankings list (method of combination of NA and Euro skaters based on thin air) has Ehlers at 16th. Below Fiala.

They had Kasperi Kapanen at 6th, but based on how he's looked lately compared to Virtanen, that combination is false.

Nylander is ranked 11th on that list.

The reality is up to individual team needs though. imho If Linden and the Canucks want to make a statement at the draft, they'll need to start picking up legit players, not poor mans' versions of the league's stars.

Anyone see Virtanen's shot? He has a howitzer and is only 17. Combine that with his speed and size and toughness and you have the raw tools for a legit NHL scoring winger. All he needs is some grooming, and if we can groom Kassian, we can groom anyone.

We can groom Kassian because he has vision. Virtanen's hockey IQ is comparable to David Booth's

I wouldn't mind fleecing a delusional GM that thinks he's playoff bound for a couple first round picks.

Somebody on HF put Nylander's head on a girl in a prom dress. Somebody else there said they swore Nylander had a hot sister. And they're 100x more anal than cdc.

Cheap lols.

Thinking we should avoid him just so opposing fanbases aren't able to use the old 'swedish sisters' joke on us. Lol.

It's as valid a reason to pass on a kid as saying that a clearly skilled kid has no hockey IQ and he's somehow post-concussion David Booth.

Dats vitriol!!!

I disagree. Kassian is a mean player, Shinkaruk plays with an edge, Horvat certainly isn't soft, I don't think Jensen is either, and Vrana isn't soft either, thats one of the things I like most about him aside from his offense is how he battles b& forechecks.

He's a good goal scorer but he's really smart and can make plays aswell, and he has a good 2-way presence.

I would still opt for Ehlers though myself. Cause I don't think Nylander will end up as a center in the NHL anyways.

Ehlers - Horvat - Kassian

Shinkaruk - Cassels - Jensen

Vrana - Gaunce - Fox

If everythings turn out well, thats not too bad.

But just imagine if we got MDC. He would make any line he's on go offensively. Or Draisaitl. Draisaitl would make us loaded down the middle.

Horvat isn't a 1st line center

Yup we should be worried about appearance on the same level as hockey IQ.

Virtanen could be pre concussion David Booth, is that good enough for a 6th overall though? I like his poise and he has all the tool's, but having a great hockey brain is the difference between the middle 6 and the top line guys.

I won't be disappointed if we take Virtanen, because I trust the management knows more than I do, just saying that I personally value hockey IQ and mental fortitude very highly.

Edit: And I value a players appearance the same as I value some opinions on this board.

There's actually nothing wrong with Virtanen's hockey IQ though. A lot of people who's opinions I value higher have said this, and I tend to agree.

Of course, he could turn into a Booth. But he also could turn into an Oshie. Both are better options than what I've seen from Nylander at this point. Esp. if the aim is to do something in the playoffs. We'll need more grease. A lot more.

I fail to see the comparison with Oshie and Virtanen. They play different styles.
