Article also says #Canucks have heavily scouted #Pens' Simon Despres. #NHLTradeDeadline

So Despres seems like a possibility... and i wouldn't say he's a bad option. He's 6'4" 210+ lbs with some offensive upside.

Kesler commands 2 bona fide blue chips. Not this fringe bullsh*t. This is like us offering Richardson, Corrado, Schroeder and a 28th 1st round pick

Penguins interested in Canucks' Kesler: report

Saturday, 03.01.2014 / 10:17 PM

By NHL.com Staff - / 2014 Trade Deadline blog

The Pittsburgh Penguins are aggressively pursuing Vancouver Canucks center Ryan Kesler, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported Saturday night.

Rob Rossi, citing multiple sources, reported that a proposed trade would send Kesler to the Penguins in exchange for center Brandon Sutter, two 2014 draft picks (likely a first-round and third-round), and the Canucks' choice of defensemen Simon Despres or Brian Dumoulin.

Rossi said general manager Ray Shero has been pursuing Kesler since January and would like to make a deal before the NHL Trade Deadline at 3 p.m. Wednesday, though the Penguins would try again during the offseason.

Kesler is a solid two-way center who can win faceoffs consistently and has scored as many as 41 goals in a season. He's 29 years old and has two more years remaining on his contract, with a $5 million salary-cap charge. Kesler leads the Canucks this season with 21 goals.

Shero has a history of making moves before the deadline; he's done so in six of seven previous seasons. In 2013, he acquired forwards Jarome Iginla, Brenden Morrow and Jussi Jokinen and defenseman Douglas Murray; Jokinen is the only one still with the team.

Would you guys do kesler for Neal?

Neal makes the same amount as Kesler.

Neal is younger than Kesler.

Neal has 164 points in his last 158 games.

Neal's pace is for 45 goals if he saw 82 games this year.

Neal's pace was for 43 goals in 82 games last year.

Neal's pace was for 41 goals in 82 games the year before that.

Pittsburgh wouldn't even entertain the idea of giving up Neal for Kesler

…..

That's really not as bad an offer as your making out. Like, at all.

Depres gets some heavy flack here, for some reason, but he's an excellent D prospect that is ready to play now.

He hits like a truck, can skate, has a good shot, can make an outlet pass and is a decent defender already. He's not in favour of his current coach but that's the biggest knock you can make on him. I've read people here speculating that he doesn't have top 2 potential and that is blatantly wrong. He certainly has the tools to be a good #2 guy much like an Ohlund pre eye injury.

Combine that with Bennett, who has top 6 PWF written all over him, a 1st round pick albeit late, and a young 3rd line centre and you have a very decent package. It doesn't contain the sexy names that are the flavour of the moment here but it's definitely value.

If this were the only potential move to be done over the next 4 months then I could understand the trepidation but I think most of us know it is not.

You're basing your assessment purely on offensive stats. Pittsburgh is a team with a dearth of offensive talent that could desperately use a player like Kesler.

Late first round pick in a weak draft equals no good prospect. Sutter is a 25 year old center who has reached his max as a third line center (IMO) and we have two of that type of player in Horvat and Gaunce. Bennett is the only good piece in that deal and Despres doesn't add enough value. If the Canucks are dealing with Pittsburgh you need at least Bennett and Pouliot or Maatta in a deal.

Gillis needs to shut down Shero, ASAP. He's CLEARLY leaking crap like "this is our offer (it's crappy)" - so other teams don't offer better. And then "We're Keslers #1 choice". It's all strategy to get the upper hand, clearly, and he's doing it publicly. Gillis needs to shut him out if he doesn't play behind closed doors.

This is ridiculous. It's only been like 2 days and Pitts is trying to dictate the market already. Enough. He's not Nonis or Burke here. Time to shut him out of discussions if he doesn't keep his trap shut.
