webba
The key here is a contract for a non-contract asset. College players can't be under contract. Opening space for bringing in new contracts is a good sign.

Azzy Mahmood
This is a good trade. Mullen was past his expiry date in terms of ever being able to make the NHL now at age 27. Costello is only 23 and is nearly a point a game down in college with is pretty good and he has decent size as well. To summarize: Out with the old and in with the young. You never know what they might develop into, but you need to know when a player is past expiry. While I want other trades to go down, this is indeed a good trade on paper. From his Utica play we know Mullen will never get an NHL call up, whereas Elvis may well have a shot down the line. You can't over-emphasise the 'minor' part of this though

elvis15
Captain at Notre Dame this year, he had 30 points (11/19) in 33 games last season. +18 with 2 game winners as well last year. Here's a bit of their write up on him: Three-time monogram winner for Notre Dame ... will serve as the team captain for the 2013-14 season ... hard-nosed physical player with great hands and a nose for the net ... a true power forward ... plays the game with a "mean" streak that knocks opponents off their game ... comes to play every night ... has proven to be a catalyst in the Irish attack when he is healthy ... intimidating presence on the ice ... has the ability to score goals around the net ... strong on his skates and tough to knock off the puck ... player that "stirs the drink" for Notre Dame http://www.und.com/sports/m-hockey/mtt/costello_jeff00.html Interesting player, likely not top end/top 6 at the NHL level without further development but will probably at least be more effective than Mullen in the AHL, as Mullen is a bit redundant with all the defensive depth the Comets have. Hockey DB has him at 19 points (11/8) in 34 games this season so may have taken a step back from the added responsibility of wearing the 'C' this year. Spoosh
But why. WTF what is even the point of reporting these. whats the point? Utica? College player by the look of it, plays with an edge and above his size. This one may pan out in the distant future. We will have to wait and see. Three pointless posts and two smarter ones. You decide.
Drummin' Canuck
Costello isn't a big guy only 5"11... but 212 pounds? Sounds like a solid dude, wonder how his skating is? Height/weight are according to the Canucks Twitter handle, Hockey DB has him at 6"0
K-Nuck
It clears a roster spot. Costello isn't signed according to many on HF. Trade incoming.

This does this at the cost of an asset that wasn't going to pan out. It also strips a contract out. It's a smart, easy-to-read move.

TheRussianRocket.
It's a warm-up trade. Mr. Gillis is now pacing his office, cracking his neck, listening to old LL Cool J. From there it depends on if he signs an NHL contract this year or just an AHL deal as to whether or not it affects our contract limit. That assumes we don't add contracts but then fix the totals some other way to allow for him on contract later of course.

If we still have that space after ND's season is over, we sign.
Niloc009
If Canucks are homing in on a deal for a young defenceman who'll be playing in Utica, this makes a bunch of sense. If the Canucks are just trading a career AHL D for a possible 4th liner or depth player, it still makes a bunch of sense.
