Mike Gillis Team 1040 Interview

Cold Hard Truth

Sounds like a return to a more appropiate style for our current team, but we're still missing some key elements to make that successful.

-We don't have a pmd. Ehrhoff was vital in turning the Sedins from 70pt players to 100pt players. Ehrhoff isn't that guy now, but nobody on our squad is either.

-You have to question the Sedins at this point. They didn't get regress this season. They nose-dived. That's not all on Torts.

-We don't have a great utility player to help Kesler. Horvat will be, but how far away is that.

-Meanwhile, how about Kesler? He still wants out, right? It took convincing to get Luongo to stay and he was still traded anyway. Could see that playing out with Kesler as well.

-We don't have enough speed, period. Some guys are slowing down with age and games-played. This is recoverable in a way, but meh.

-Our defense is getting unstable. Edler's numbers highlight that. He is the guy who REALLY needs to pick it up or this team is going nowhere.

-Our goaltending took a big dive. However at least they're prospects who can still improve vastly.

If we somehow pry Subban out of Montreal, I can see this team prospering immediately using the style Gillis wants to use. However, Subban needs a bit of work on the defensive/discipline end of things. He'll also be awfully expensive.

If Horvat comes in and contributes on faceoffs/defensive shutdown ability right away, then that is huge. HUGE. But tall order there and there are certainly bigger centers around the NHL.

I think this is all just lip service to get fans into the seats while the team continues it's ongoing downward trend. Going to be tough to reverse it with this group and the league hasn't exactly been friendly to us lately.

Much more accurate description and less Toronto-like...

Toronto sucks. I dont see how bullet points are Toronto like but whatever floats your boat hater

I have faith in Gillis after this interview

it was a decent interview but Mike has sounded like a man with a plan every year since 2011.

Gillis has said the same kind of crap every year the last 3 years and done not much so its ok to be skeptical,

At this point I could only see Horvat being a 3rd line C, and Matthais/Richardson are better suited for that position right now. Don't expect to see Horvat for another couple of years

Great summary guys, thanks!

Refreshing to hear a candid, non-lawyering interview from MG. He probably recognizes how pissed off the fans are. Any more cliche and generic interviews and we might just blown our tops.

It is obvious that no one in this organization is on the same page. Ownership differs from management who differs from coaching staff who differs from players. That is just not a recipe for success. He also sounds like he's calling out Ryan Kesler for not buying in.

It just sounds to me like Torts's vision of how a hockey team works isn't shared by anyone else. He might be just a mere memory as a Canucks coach very soon. Gotta right this ship somehow

Gillis traded his prized asset for the future so if he tries to life support this team with assets instead of cap space then he should be gone.If he wants to convert older assets to try and mould a team in his vision from scratch then fine because it is pretty clear he can't aquire the players he covets through trade.

I'm paraphrasing for the most part but it should have a similar meaning at least. I hate when people add their own connotation to someone's statement even if it's just because they want a quick/short recap.

He should change his name to Cold Hard Truth

No thanks! B) People who know don't need a name to tell them what someone's like.

Ok, that worked.

I never listen to the morning any more though cause 'bro jake' is just unlistenable.

Team1040 usually posts any Canucks interviews on their twitter so if you follow them you'd get to listen to them after and avoid the rest of the crap (not a Pratt fan at all myself).

Gillis: "We're going to get back to the style of play that made us successful 6 years ago."

Well that is reassuring considering we did not make playoffs 6 years ago...

But that style of play, with additions to the roster, did get us to the playoffs after and eventually the SCF. You must be part of the now generation...

Sounds like Gillis wants to go back to 'upbeat, uptempo, puck posession' - Torts is out. He doesn't play that type of game, and his style is what affected the teams' terrible output this season.

Also sounds like some 'bold moves' to 'compete for the cup' are:

1) sign 1-2 big name free agents (Moulson, Statsny or Cammalieri?)

2) sign a Pavol Demitra type passer/skill 2nd line player (Grabovski? Hemsky? Gaborik? Vrbata?),

3) sign a grizzled vet like he did with Sundin (Jagr for 1 year and throw money at him? Iginla? Greene to replace Alberts?)

4) and trade for a PMD like he did with Ballard and offload youth and piece-meal parts or 1st rounders (Brian Campbell? one of Chicago's Dmen? Sekera from Carolina?)

5) sign a 'moneyball' player for cheap (Heatley? Skille? PM Bouchard? Downie?)

6) draft a swede dman in the later rounds (Andersson? Tommernes? Cederholm anyone?)

7) Shink/Fox/Horvat/Cassels/Corrado develop in the AHL (possible late callups near end of next season)

8) Bolser the AHL Comets with some high level overseas talent (from obscure Euro-leagues) with hopes they'll be the 'depth' or call-ups

9) and to top it off just for ownership - bring in some more 'badda bing/badda boom' italian skaters

10) dangles a goalie in a trade (Ericksson? Cannata?)

Don't think I missed any of Gillis' 'vision' tendencies?....

From the sounds of the interview, it appears Gillis knows his job is on the line as well. Sounds almost irritable with ownership. Reminds me of when Nonis missed the playoffs and had BIG ideas to make them compete again (Richards for Schneider/Edler; sign the fab 'Fabian' Brunnstrom, etc) only to get canned a few days later....

you're welcome ( from Elvis 15 and myself)

i wonder if they kept Torts and Gillis and traded out 3-4 of the core players and brought in bigger and faster players (checkmark both boxes) if these guys couldn't make some magic happen.

There is no doubt that Tortorella hasnt made some mistakes but i blame the players, these are the same guys that quit on Alain Vigneault.

i say Keep Torts, Keep Gillis , make some good hockey trades and bring in the youth.

worse case , another disaster and we get a shot at mcDavid or Eichel.

Time to get rid of the boring style hockey torts brings.

Not sure he can change his style, if he cant, bring in laviolette or marc crawford with his run n gun style. Better fit for this team.

And the defensemen on this team thrives for that style and not be forced to be defensive specialists which theyre not.
