The one undersized guy we took was Shroeder.... Might not be a total bust but isnt looking like a 1st or 2nd liner.

That's one undersized guy WE took. Guys with size won't always pan out either. Sure, size helps to be able to stay on the puck, but there are lots of small players that transition properly to the NHL. Brad Marchand, Andrew Shaw, Jiri Hudler,. Patrick Kane, Marty St. Louis, Zach Parise. The list could go on forever.

Size doesn't determine if someone will likely be a bust or not.

What guys have we taken in the 1st rounds lately, that have size, have been busts?

To be fair, we can't say any of the recent draft picks we've taken in the last 3 years have been "busts", because many of them have seldom seen NHL action, and are still developing, which in turn, is good of course.

Of course Shredder could be brought up because he has seen a lot of NHL action, I personally never thought he was ready, which in turn led him to get injured constantly, and is leading him to bust.

Why does Schroeder keep coming up in the Ehlers discussion. I would think Patrick Kane would be a more apt comparison in terms of style of play, position and height/weight In fact I know he would. The Schroeder comparison is just way off base on every count.

Pretty much. One is a lock for top ten and the other slid down to 22nd overall. I think Ehler's has the kind of raw skill that this club is sorely lacking. And that speed... god I'd be ecstatic if we got him.

Kane's skill level is on a different planet than Ehlers.

Because they are here to TROLL the fanbase. Using Schroeder as a comparison is ridiculous. There are a lot of 5ft 11 players in the league but to compare them to Ehlers defeats their trolling.

They camp out on a thread about Ehlers to specifically whine about the guy in a negative way , using ridiculous comparibles

There is a laundry list of high end talent in the league at 5ft 11. Even 5ft 10, -most of whom arent as fast as Ehlers- who are just fine. Granted, Ehlers needs to put on weight but he will. They all do.

I agree with Deniro. He wont last past #8. The guy has enormous skill and speed along with hockey IQ.

As a North-American skater. VIrtanen COULD go anywhere from 8th-15th IMO. There is going to be A LOT of shifting after the top-5 barring the teams take those 5 (Bennett, Reinhart, Ekblad, Draisaitl, Dal Colle). As I said, I would love Ehlers, but he's a high risk, high reward type draft pick. He's either going to be a stud, or bust. I wouldn't mind Nylander, Perlini or Ritchie either. Lots of people want to stay away from Perlini but I'm curious as to why that is? I haven't been keeping an eye on him as much as others but I haven't quite picked out what's scary about taking him.

The consensus seems to be that the Canucks will draft Virtanen because he's a BC boy. I find that hilarious. Canucks will take the BPA at 6th overall, and that's not Virtanen, in my opinion.

Ehlers will definitely need to work on his size otherwise he'll likely have issues making the NHL. I'd be willing to take the risk on him since we took Horvat last year who was one of the safest picks in that draft. But as DeNiro said, they're 18, there's LOTS of time.

The euros are no better this year.

Weak.

Draft.

(lol)

Here is a good take on Ehlers (pronounced EEL-HERS )

http://www.mynhldraft.com/2014/NHL-Draft-Profiles/Nikolaj-Ehlers

Nikolaj Ehlers's Player Profile

"An incredibly skilled forward, Ehlers makes plays at high speeds and doesn’t mind going to the tough areas in order to score. Scouts see him as an excellent complementary player and have even hesitantly brought up teammate Jonathan Drouin as a comparable, as lofty as that sounds. While playing for Biel last year, he even got to practise with locked-out NHL stars Tyler Seguin and Patrick Kane. And along with getting the Mooseheads back to the Memorial Cup for a title defense, Ehlers will be counted on at the world juniors next season with Denmark.

In the past 12 months or so, he helped the Danes get up to the top bracket at both the under-18s and the world juniors; an obvious point of pride for him."
From Ryan Kennedy in a The Hockey News 'NHL prospect hot list' post - March 4th

Imported from Denmark, Ehlers has replaced the scoring void quite nicely after Nathan MacKinnon made the leap to the Colorado Avalanche. Like his predecessor in Halifax, Ehlers is one of the fastest skaters in the draft, blazing past defenders and utilizing his dynamic elusive cuts in and out of traffic to create room. The depth of intelligence Ehlers possesses for the game allows him to adopt both a shooter and playmaker’s mentality. Rising up draft boards quickly.
Profile from: Brendan Ross of Dobber Prospects - Feb. 16th

I'll give you one thing, Nikolaj Ehlers was a dark horse coming into this draft, slotted to be a second round choice at the beginning of this season. Now he's gaining serious consideration, and a likelihood, of getting picked in the top ten of this year's 2014 NHL Entry Draft. The correct pronunciation of this offensive dynamo's name is ("Nick-oh-LIE" "EEL-hers"). He hails from Denmark and played in the Swiss Men's League in Biel posting strong numbers like 12 points in 2 games and 8 points in 2 games at the age of 14. He is by far the fastest player in the draft, and faster than almost all of the players in last year's draft, which sets him apart by a huge margin. He's had his speed compared to that of Pavel Bure and his style of offensive play compared to Peter Forsberg - something which scouts may well use to further back their opinions of Ehlers as being one of the most dynamic players in this year's draft. He has voiced his want and need to gain size, particularly to about 185-190lbs, so he knows exactly what he needs to work on, where his goals lie, and how he will get there. He has an absolute laser of a wrist shot; an accurate rocket that he snaps off at top speed. He plays for the Halifax Mooseheads of the QMJHL. He's 5'11 and about 175 lbs so the same size of William Nylander. The thing that is going to make him a special player in the future is that he's a leader. He played with the Dallas Stars' Tyler Seguin and the Chicago Blackhawks Patrick Kane during the NHL lockout, and learned amazing english and a very unselfish style of play from them during that time. He sees the ice with an uncanny eye and makes plays for the team, not himself. If there is a tiny slit in the defense, he's already slid through it and scored on the goalie before you can blink. He works the hardest out of most of the players on the team, first to get to training last to leave. Vancouver Canucks fans have already dubbed him "The Electric Ehl" due to his electrifying, explosive style of play.

Comparable Players:

Markus Naslund (Skill)
Pavel Bure (Speed)

  • Peter Forsberg (Seeing the ice)

  • Mix (Nathan MacKinnon/Jonathan Drouin)

  • Patrick Kane (Style of play)

Or we're sick of the obsession over the guy and starting threads about him in Canucks talk is getting a little ridiculous.

Im not trolling anything. I have a huge point that you dont want to acknowledge. Its easy for CDC to pick a boom or bust player 6th overall. Try being in Linden or the GM's shoes. They cant mess this up. If they think that player is Ehlers then great. I highly doubt it though. There are a few players that look built for the western conference. Ehlers would be served well to get drafted out east. Im not always right though.

Not part of this heated argument about Ehlers. Just would like to know (from someone that is clued into these players) how much alike Ehlers and Shinks are. Are their games comparable? Who do you think will be the more valuable player?

Ehlers could be a steal at the 6th pick but its easy to say after the fact. His numbers are great, but he plays in an easier league then Virtanen and Ritchie. Dont Ehlers and Shrinkaruk play the same position as well? Another reason we most likely wont draft Ehlers. BPA yes, but if Ritchie or Dal Colle are around I think we take them. I think Id take Virtanen over Ehlers as well but its close.

He's good, but he's definitely project. I'm tired of waiting 5 years for our prospects to pan out. I want a guy who can step in right away

It would be nice, but it usually doesn't work out that way.

Look at Tatar and Nyquist on the Wings. While they are rookies, they've been developing on the farm team for 4 or 5 years so that when they did join the lineup this year, they were able to hit the ground running and have an impact right away.

For Ehlers to succeed he'll need to go to the east. At least for the moment. Out west it's more a man's game and he'll be crushed like Raymond and so many others have been.

And you're right about Shinkaruk. He played in the tougher WHL and he makes Ehlers redundant. Would be more obvious if he weren't currently out.

6th overalls are not supposed to be projects like this. They were 2nd and 4th rounders. Far more acceptable for long-term projects.
