Both methods are also much cheaper than blasting off a newer Atlas rocket.

The current atlas V rockets use the Russian RD-180 first stage engine. That is being phased out as congress in 2014 passed a bill to require the new engines to be US made but the engines already on order from Russia will be used up first.

We plebs get to play Kerbal Space Program. Elon Musk gets to just throw money around and do it for rea.

When Musk sold Paypal to Ebay in late 2002 he was asked what he planned to do next as he was now a billionaire. He said build permanent habitats on Mars. The reporters laughed at the time and though he was nuts when they saw he was serious. They arent laughing anymore.

The heavy launch vehicle for a Mars mission is on track at Space X and this mishap wont delay that.

Atlas rockets are still very expensive. Everything that NASA buys is. Since it has a large budget, companies always want as big of a piece of that pie as they can get. Just look at the Russians even. They keep jacking up the price of Soyuz rides for the US. Now that congress has cut $300 million more dollars for the research on the new capsules, the Soyuz rides are going to keep costing a fortune.

It exploded? What do you expect from such a phallic looking machine? I mean come on, think about it. Oval shaped UFOs never explode, we need to move toward the oval. They're erratic at times and given to sudden unexpected changes in direction but they never explode. There maybe occasional discharge issues to deal with but that's about it.

Are you suggesting this sudden explosion may have been due to blue thrusters?
