Is it possible to contain the smell from a smokey backyard BBQ?

In Florida, one man had a run-in with an official over the scent wafting from his grill.

The video of the exchange between the homeowner, his friend, and a Pinellas county environmental specialist after a neighbor once again called to complain about the barbeque odor is making the rounds on social media.

Allegedly, that same woman has also called police to report the so-called nuisance, only to have the officers side with the homeowner.

That's when the county stepped in.

After complaint number 15, they sent out an inspector to document the "grill byproduct" and issue the homeowner a warning about somehow keeping his smoke from wafting into the street.

Video of the incident, originally posted to Facebook Wednesday by homeowner Scotty Jordan, Pinellas County Environmental Specialist Joe Graham discussing the alleged infraction with Jordan and friends after a nearby neighbor alerted the county.

Im only here because of the odor, Graham says. Im only here because of the smoke.

During the conversation, Graham asserts that the men are in violation of a local rule that bans the smell of BBQ from crossing over ones property line.

I can smell it again right now, but Im on your property, Graham tells the group. Youre allowed to have it smell on your property, so that doesnt count, but when Im on the street, thats when it counts.

Astonished by the claim, the cameraman asks Graham how the group, or anyone for that matter, would be able to control where odor travels.

So were supposed to control the smoke and the wind and where its blowing it? he asks.

Graham goes on to suggest that the group move their BBQ on a regular basis in conjunction with wind patterns or purchase a specialized version designed to minimize smoke.

C'mon Joe, you know you're enjoying your own bbq meals every freakin' night.

I dunno what to say about the article, but I'm glad my neighbourhood isn't like this. This seems very toxic, with miserable people trying to spread their misery to others. Makes me appreciate how well we get along in our neighborhood.

If this happened to me I'd go down to the local pulp mill and call the enforcement officer to complain about the smell. I'd then go to the downtown core and file a complaint about all the restaurants, the welding shop and ANY other place that emits odours. By the time I was done they would either need more enforcement officers or the enforcement officer's boss would rescind the "keep it in your own yard edict".

ON some days I can be difficult to deal with.

And to deal with "that" neighbour I'd check to see what kind of plants and flowers are in her yard and complain about those odours as well.

Man I've gotta get some coffee in me, what a grouch. :)

I've dealt with this sort of thing before. I'd rather move than take away any part of my life dealing with a toxic environment like this. And it spreads like the plague, so it's not like it will disappear once the biggest belligerents are gone.

Maybe i'm in the minority, but usually when i smell a neighbors BBQ's, it only encourages me to have my own barbecue.

When I was at SJSU, I went to visit some friends at UC Berkeley, and there were a bunch of militant vegans who were going ballistic about BBQ smoke. Unfortunately a delicious tri-tip isn't appealing to everyone, and it's the US so you can't expect people to just deal with their problems like adults.
