I disagree.

When Gaunve and Virtanen are on the ice, they're creating chances and are able, for the most part, to keep the opposition pinned in their own zone.

As long as he keeps getting chances and remains vigil to his style of play, he will start finding the back of the net.

Sounds rather familiar to the Sedins early on -- lots of zone time but not always results.

And look at the outcome of patience. We had the privilege of watching the greatest brother duo of all time.

It seems if a prospect doesn't start producing within a couple seasons Canuck fans want him gone.

The fact is, some players take longer than others to come around. Gaunce is one that's taking longer but as long as he's taking positive steps, I remain encouraged.

I like what I'm seeing in what's being built.

I've been, highly sceptical of JB's top picks but am now seeing the plan coming to fruition and have learned to be less critical of him.

JB's drafting ability is going to turn this team into an annual contender for a long time. We must remember the mess he inherited when he first signed on. All the ntc's made his job extremely difficult.

Daniel Sedin - 20 years old - First 75 games / 20 goals / 14 assists / 34 points / -3

Henrik Sedin - 20 years old - First 82 games / 9 goals / 20 assists / 29 points / -2

Brendan Gaunce - 22 / 23 years old - First 98 games / 2 goals / 6 assists / 8 points / -12

Chris Tanev - 22 / 23 years old - First 92 games / 2 goals / 8 assists / 10 points / +14

Not one of Gaunces 2 goals were scored from his stick in fact he didn't even know where the puck was.

Come on guys please.  Is he defensively responsible yes, but let's keep it somewhat realistic,

Maybe he's more Chris Tanev than Sedin.  I actually think he would make a good defenceman. Except not while playing forward.

Differing opinions is all.

Merry Christmas!

Slightly different roles and abilities...

I don't think their point was that Gaunce can turn in to a future hall of fame and hart trophy winner.

They compared him to the Sedins' I didn't.  I agree different roles and abilities is correct.

No, they're comparing that it took them time to adapt their particular games to the NHL.

What particular game does Gaunce offer that relates in any way to the Sedins'?  And as the stats indicate the Sedins' did pretty well for 20 year old rookies, picked top 3 in a highly publicized draft, they had huge expectations and pressure, were new to North America and had to learn to play on smaller ice in an era with a much more physically punishing style of play.

So if they meant it may take Gaunce time to develop a game, okay.  Yes he is defensively responsible. But in no way can he be compared to the Sedins or their circumstances.

They all took time (or in Gaunce's case, taking) to adapt their games to what most would consider their 'peak' performance for their respective skill sets and roles. That's how it relates.

It's pretty much their entire point. Not sure why is hard to understand..?

If Gaunce wasn't reading plays as well as he is I might be more worried. Like Virtanen he is getting chances.

Because it is an awful comparison and couldn't be a more different set of circumstances or respective skill sets or roles.  That's how it doesn't relate.  Not sure what your point is?

Maybe provide some information or an opnion or proof, like what is Gaunce's 'peak' performance based on his sample of games to date and based on his respective skill set?   Not sure why you don't understand?

I find it disrespectful to the Sedins' accomplishemnts based on their circumstances.

My point?

That you're being exceedingly obtuse about a pretty simple and easy to understand point made by other posters.

Nobody is comparing their skill sets, skills, offensive production etc that you seem to be myopic-ly and wrongly focusing on.

Their point is that some players don't come in to the league flying and playing at/near their peaks and take time to build their game at this level. They used a couple of the most recognizable players in franchise history as examples. Are they similar players to Gaunce? Nope. Could they have used more similar players to Gaunce who also took time to develop their game at this level? Probably.

But focusing on all those other things that nobody else was even talking about completely, utterly misses the point. So well done.

Unfair to compare him to the Sedins.  I'd say he's more like "no hands Hanson" .

exactly . took hansen a number of years to blossom . but was always a solid 2 way player

but still why limit guance and his potential upside

brendan (aka gretzky) gaunce has a nice ring to it

And your analysis and assumptions prove you don't even understand the absurdity of the comparison.

They used the two most respected and successful players in Canucks history, who overcame huge odds to be extremely successful to support their wishful projection of an underperforming borderline NHL player in Gaunce.

I focused on those points.

Gaunce is showing signs of being a good face off guy, and solid defensively. I don't really care about his production if he's going to be a defensive zone specialist, but I would like it if he used his size more and made some harder hits but maybe he's still getting that shoulder into shape? At this point Green might as well stick with him, I don't see anyone coming along this year to take his spot away from him. If he can improve even a little bit on face-offs and get more physical he could be a very solid 4C even by the end of this year. I don't think CDC should expect more than that given his performance to date.

I’m really hopping Gaunce could become a Manny Malholtra.  Manny was a first round pick, actually top ten.  He was out of the league, until he realized he needed to develop a niche - defensive specialist, with some grit too.  I’m hoping Manny can convince Gaunce (who seems like a very smart guy) that He too needs to establish himself in a similar way.  Fingers are crossed:)

He could still have Malhotra'ish upside in the next ~5 years if he continues to slowly build his game at this level. Nothing at all wrong with that.
