(Proposal) Stockpiling picks

Recommended Posts

To Tampa

Edler + 2nd (Clb)

To Van

14th + Callahan

Tamp gets a top 4d and creates cap room allowing them to possibly keep Drouin. Edler is likely worth at least 2 2nds. With Callahan coming back possibly a mid to late first and with the 2nd added I think he could fetch a mid first in this "weaker" draft. Maybe we need to add something small to entice TB but i think it could be done.

To Buff
Tanev + 4th (SJ)

To Van
8th OA (Buffalo)

Van Picks 2017
5 Glass/Middlestadt/Villardi
8 Liljegren/Makar
14 Vesalainen/Foote/Hague
33rd
64th

Sign one or two of Kulikov, Streit, Oduya, Del Zotto, Campbell to mentor and guide our d and Flip them at the deadline for picks in 2018

Protect Sbisa and allow Gaunce to get claimed

Thoughts?

Who EXACTLY plays defense for us next season if our top two guys are both traded?  I like the concept of getting those picks, and getting younger too, but we still need to have some experienced minute munchers on our back end don't we?

Callahan waives his NMC to go to one of the worst teams in the league exactly why?

Buffalo isn't giving us their 8th for that unfortunately.

I don't think any player would want to stay on a team that doesn't want him, a fresh start on a team wouldn't expect too much from him may be good? And for the 8th pick? I say no, we trade out best defenceman for a pick that may never turn out or be a top 4 6 defenceman.

Not really. We have no intention of contending. Opening roster spots allows us to sign stop-gap free agents to trade at the deadline or if we like them keep, and give some of our youth a look if JB thinks it's the right time. So we COULD trade both of them quite easily.

That being said, To the thread in general, I don't think these trades are particularly good ideas. First there is the question of the value in some of them, but more importantly, this isn't the draft to be going all in on early-mid to mid first round picks. It's only like the worst draft in the last 3-4 years, don't get fooled by the draft hype. Just because people are discussing prospects on the radio etc, doesn't mean they are actually THAT good.

I'm all for stockpiling picks, but it would be for the 2018 draft. I'd be concentrating on teams that are pushing to make the playoffs but could still flop.

One team that's been intriguing me lately, is Carolina. They just signed Darling and seem to be trending toward pushing for the playoffs now. They could be a team that may pay, above premium to secure a defensive specialist in Tanev.

To Carolina:

Chris Tanev

Markus Granlund

To Vancouver:

Carolina's 1st rnd picks in 2017 and 2018

If available, I take Glass at 5. If he's not, I look to have a deal in place for the pick up f he's not, for a pick in the 18 draft.

With Carolina's 12th, if available, I grab Hague, again, being willing to shop the pick for another 2018 pick if he's not available.

If these two are gone, I gladly forfeit the first round this year to secure picks in next year's first round to maximize our chances at a first over all selection.

If we were able to, magically, get these two in this year's draft, Benning's value as a GM would be solidified, IMO.

I'm fully onboard with stockpiling picks in the mid-late stages of the first and second round.

I do not believe that star players will not come from this draft... it is just that their 'star' apparentcy  will not be as clear/observable at this stage of their career.

What becomes more important in a draft like this is not 'draft position', but bullets in the chamber (i.e., the best approach is a shotgun, not a sniper rifle).

Not if we're gearing up for next years lottery already Alf.

Ya, that's a good point.  Trevor did (finally) use the 'rebuild' word.  Would trading Edler and Tanev mean the Twins would likely want to move too?

The twins are unmovable.   There is no realistic scenario where a team would take them on at their current cost ($14 million cap hit for 2nd line production and on wrong side of speed trend).   Unless a team has issues with cap floor, e.g. Canes, there is nothing out there among the remainder of the league that really makes any sense.   A contender?   Why would they?   For that kind of money, you can get better production with less dollars.   Perhaps Vegas who can get people flocking to the rink to see "Swedish twins performing slick moves" or similar.

If Glass isn't available, trade pick for another potential top 10 pick next year. I want to get us the best odds of getting Brady Tkachuk next year. Gonna be a stud in the NHL.

Colorado, Arizona, Carolina, Las Vegas.

It's just I remember Trevor saying it wouldn't be fair to the Twins, while they are here, to rebuild.  I guess Trevor had a talk with them about us rebuilding now?

Would perhaps be talking to Vegas about the twins if that's the case.
