A proposal to fix officiating

It's no secret that certain problem officials seem to be assigned to important games.  In the Canucks' case, Kelly Sutherland has conducted himself so unprofessionally that his very integrity is questionable.  My proposal is simple:  In the playoffs, each team is permitted to submit a list of up to 2 referees they do not wish to officiate their games.  Given that there are NHL refs sitting out, this should be a reasonably easy to accomodate request.  This would have the following benefits:

  • Provide real accountability for the officials.  If enough teams put you on their list, maybe your employment should be reviewed.
  • Lowers likelihood of match-fixing by the league flying in repeat offenders to officiate critical games
  • Reduced public call-outs of officials when GM's are offered real recourse.

Thoughts?

The List.  I like that one. One more benefit would be that t would also reduce bad calls. Especially bad home ice calls during the season. Not sure about how ethically this would play but there would develop a tendency to favour the home team on calls.  But in a lot of ways, even Bettman and owners would like that part. And also every team would be at the same advantage/disadvantage. It would garner more home wins for teams, which draws fans in. Because refs would be more hesitant to call iffy penalties (or to not call ones going the other way) if they know they are being evaluated for the playoffs if that particular home team makes them.

Dump the two ref system. Despite two ref's they still miss calls, and pretty much the same number of calls with one ref. How often is one ref waiting for the closer ref to call play off, or blow the whistle?

1 ref, 2 linesman, problem solved.

Having only one ref won't really solve anything.  Pretty sure there is a statue in front of your arena commemerating just how great the officiating was when there was only one ref.

There will always be missed, weak, or bad calls, regardless if there's one ref or ten of them.

Good idea.  The 2 ref system caused a lot of unqualified guys to be promoted.  We're still feeling the impact years later it seems.  Unfortunately, the union will scream bloody murder when half their ranks are sent down to the AHL where they belong.

While I like the idea of a list, I still don't think the one ref system will work because, well, it kinda didn't work the first time.

Roger Neilsen waved the white flag under one ref, Koharski was called a fat pig when there was one ref, Lysiak took umbrage with Foyt under one ref...three blind mice by the organists, "Bulls***!" chants, and god only knows how many injuries behind the play, all one ref system.

It doesn't matter how many refs are out there, some fans will still be unhappy with the calls.

Would have saved that goal by Vegas. Ref knocked it right into the danger zone and voila Vegas scored.

I like the ability to blacklist two refs from each team. Might keep the refs more honest in how they call games. And officiating should not be involved in game management.. I have thought for years that all professional sports should have a universal independent referee's department that doesn't answer to owners or Bettman. Simple if you don't want hooking calls take the hooking penalty out of the book. lol

That's called game fixing. Game 7 scf the Canucks got an official that cost Pat Quinn a lot of money in fines/ complaining. They tried to get a neutral official and no luck. And 3 penalties in the first 15 mins of period 1, the game was out of reach.
