In the present - Mittelstadt is not really a comparable to Patrick, let alone better.

Mittelstadt has 3 pts in 12 games - and all 3 of those are powerplay points, while Patrick has exclusively 5 on 5 points.

Mittelstadt is 41.7% in the faceoff circle.

He's getting 61.9% offensive zone starts - with a 49.6% corsi.

His on ice goal metrics are also not as good as Patrick's - in far easier minutes...

Patrick is more physical in terms of hits (11 to 6) and grittier / blocked shots (4 to 1).

He's a better puck manager 4 takeaways and 2 giveaways (+2) to Mittelstadt's 3 and 7 (-4).

Patrick is actually the far better player at this point by most objective measures, in a more challenging role.

His interviews are almost surreal.

He has the depth of voice - and the disposition in some ways - of a 30 yr old.

But then the dangly body of a teenager - is in fact a teenager lol  - which does not stop him from attackng the game like a beast.   Some of his puck hounding is top notch aggressive, limited only by his size and strength at this point.  A few instances recently where he launches himself into a puck carrier - without a lot of impact - but that could very well change with time.

The NHL should  be very concerned that this guy has another handful of years of growth - because the very real prospect is that he actually continues to get that much better.

Good point. If he barely improves from here on out but packs on a bit of size he will be a great player for years to come.

If he actually develops for the next 2-3 years while adding size that’s a scary player.

His defensive awareness is what gets me.

no doubt.  that's something the Sedin's never really managed to translate two-ways - but Pettersson already has that instinct without the puck and seems to apply his hockey intelligence at all times.   Could be the rare complete player with that kind of talent in that sense.

Kind of feels like one of the Canucks rookies has been voted best quite a bit over the last 2 years, with Boeser last year. Unfortunately, Brock's injury affected him not winning the Calder last year. This year Elias looks to be the best rookie. He sure doesn't play like a rookie. So, where's Dahlin in this conversation?  4 points (1 goal) in 12 games. What a bum lol, jk

Wonder if Quinn Hughes comes in any better?

Hard to wonder what a generational prospect would have to accomplish to be considered a generational prospect? Did McDavid or Matthews start that fast?

I'm seeing Petey with minimum 85 pts if he stays healthy and no more cheap shots!

A recent article by THN had him getting mid sixties, but said it wouldn’t surprise if it was mid-seventies either.  Spoke to his insanely high shooting percentage, that it would drop but his shot totals would raise which would counter it to some degree.  Wonder how many of those will be goals though...fifty?  Winning the Richard as a rookie would sure be something.  Forty would still put him in some pretty elite company.   Last year 49 won it, Mathews looked to be on a mission to obliterate recent totals but is out for a month and won’t be in more than 70 games now (and only played 62 last year so you have to wonder if about his durability, once again hard pads injure another athlete, when are they going to put the two together), he could still break 50.  Laine seems to going now, Ovi can never be counted out, even at 33-34, but EP does at least appear to have what it takes too at this point.  When was the last time a Canuck scored 49 goals, and who was it?

Forget everything else... I'm just happy that the Canucks finally got a player that 4 other teams missed out on. When was the last time we ever said that about the Canucks drafting in the first round? The only memories I have from the draft is how we missed out on the likes Karlsson, Kopitar, Oshie, Carlson, Giroux just to name a few.

Tony Tanti had 49 I believe and was almost the first Canuck to get 50! Very good logic and read! One thing I have noticed about Elias is his ability to make the right play. If his wingers start scoring his goals will go down and turn to apples. because he is so unselfish!

Highly unlikely lol

i'd be shocked if he doesn't get another cheap shot by the all star break.

We a still havn't seen Petey at his best or playing center with confidence! Wait till he has that down pat. He will be able to take a few more calculated risks. As I have said for two years about Elias "prepare to be shocked!"
