Popular Post -DLC-
With the world in a state of turmoil and unrest, I thought it would be worthwhile to share stories of people we see or know of who do good things. It can be small deeds of kindness in paying it forward or selfless acts that help others. With people currently full of anxiety, I also encourage you/me/everyone to do things that support this. Even if it's offering a kind word (from a distance of course) to someone who looks like they may need it. I'll start. This one's both heartbreaking but shows someone's heart of gold (my boss'). I work in an area with a high volume of dumped and feral rabbits. It breaks my heart but I also have a perfect spot to watch over them (second story office with all windows). Has happened more often than I'd like - look out the window to see a rabbit in distress. Wednesday, it was a bun in the bike lane, hunkered down like he was sleeping but on the edge of the road as cars whizzed by so I knew he wasn't. I showed my boss who, despite us being in an important "COVID planning meeting" said "GO...go get him". He offered to help but I went alone (as I knew I'd be a mess if it "wasn't good"). We've done this drill before...once it was a crow, another a bun. The situation wasn't good...I knew it was dire because a crow was already there. Lump in throat, I ran out with my box, shoo'd the crow away and grabbed the poor guy. I'll spare you the details...nothing gory or gruesome, but clearly a broken leg and in a bad way. I rushed him to my vet (I am a weekly customer of theirs at the moment). They gasped as I ran through the door, box in hand. "No, it's not my guy" I explained. As I told them about the bun, they whisked him away and behind the curtain, where I heard him scuffling as they removed him from the box. Good sign, he's putting up a fight. We (my daughter and I - she has our other ailing bun) dropped $900 the week before at the vet...they know I'm/we're strapped to the max. I apologized for bringing in a bun I couldn't really do too much for financially...but also couldn't leave there to suffer. They called the best on earth bunny rescue friends of mine, who agreed to pick up the tab (they give them a good discount and they can run a tab). I donate to them, so they knew I'd get to them at some point in dribs and drabs when my situation gets better. As it would be, when I returned to work my boss asked how things were. We talked for a bit and I told him of Rabbitats' plight...how they were already up to their necks in debt and with the COVID deal shutting down all fundraisers, it would be a rough ride. But they'd agreed to "look after" the bun and associated costs. He immediately insisted that he would pay the vet bill for "Jake" (I'd named our guy...found him on Jacombs so it seemed fitting). This gesture by him was out of nowhere and floored me...our business is falling behind in all of this and it helped beyond words. A whole new respect for him. Sadly, Jake was in rough shape and x-rays confirmed that the best we could do for him was to let him go. 7 4 2 1 Link to comment

Popular Post Chickenspear
Well, my sister used to be a nurse up here in Victoria, she's currently living in Redmond, WA, one of the hardest hit districts by Covid, has lots of elderly neighbors. She's taken it on herself to go grab whatever they need from groceries, to medical supplies. They leave a note on their door, she drops the goods off. She's not even accepting payments from these people. She's just always been that caring person, that I could never come close to. Much love. 5 1 2 Link to comment
coastal.view
thanks deb everyone needs to find the positive in this time of crisis don't let down your guard though stay balanced in dealing with all which will still develop (i am incredibly concerned that if the usa situation goes as poorly as italy that trump has set himself up to create blame along racial lines this could get really ugly as trump lacks normal boundaries) Edited March 20, 2020 by coastal.view 1 Link to comment
Popular Post smithers joe
i’m amazed at how small gestures can warm people’s lives. after my wife had her stroke we joined a church. because we had to leave a few minutes earlier due to her fear of getting knocked down, as we passed this one fellow, he always reached out and patted her shoulder. that meant so much to her. when i worked at our high school, i always smiled as i greeted others. one teacher told me once that, that smile made him feel that the day was going to be okay. 3 2 Link to comment
goalie13
I agree @debluvscanucks. I had to say goodbye to my Max on Monday. Along the way my vet didn't bother charging me for so many visits. She was fantastic every step of the way through the whole process. As a result of COVID, some local vets have closed their doors. But not ours. She just set up procedures so you can safely bring your pet in. They're having people stay in their vehicle until it's their turn and that way there's only one customer at a time in the office. It's heartwarming when people step up like that. 1 2 Link to comment

Ralph.
I live in a building which, since I've moved in, I've discovered houses some pretty shady peeps (two incidences of everyone's mailboxes being smashed/ripped into, someone spraypainted very unbecoming remarks about a man named "Perry" up and down our stairwell, etc...) but there are various small, quiet families living in it too. Coming home from work yesterday there was a note on the inside of our front door — Someone stating they've made themselves available to assist elderly and at-risk people in the building with their necessary tasks (grocery shopping and the like) during the outbreak, with their contact info and apartment number. Caught me a bit off guard with recent observances in the place, but it was refreshing to see someone with a positive reaction to this whole thing. 2 1 Link to comment

JM_
Good thread idea Deb. People are good. But we're still monkey-brained things capable of panicking, so we need good things to calm us down at times like these. Its more important than ever to get outside for a few minutes (safely of course), and go hunt down some positive stories. 2 Link to comment
DADDYROCK
Anytime is a good time to lessen the burden for people, but now in this epic pandemic we as Canadians need to show our best and show the rest of the world we are all in this together and we have to stay safe and try to help where ever we can, Share food if you made too much, talk to your neighbors(at a safe distance) and reassure them we will get through this. Let's not panic and together we will prevail, that's what Canadians do. 1 Link to comment
