What is your gaming setup?

Bruce Boudreau

Recommended Posts

As we anticipate the next decade of gaming it will be all about 4K and even 8K potentially by the end of the decade becoming the standard.

But where is the happy medium? How do you plan to optimize your gaming setup to get ready? Are you at all worried on trying to future proof? Will you go PC for longevity or console for ease of access and use for the average casual gamer?

Do you prefer playing with faster frame rates and response time on a monitor sitting in your gaming chair in the den or on the biggest screen possible with your TV on your coach?

With games increasing in size every year and the demanding graphics and frame rates specs which machine will reign supreme?

At what point will the graphical differences in games played on pc vs console be unrealized by the human eye and force game developers to focus more on actual gameplay over visuals?

Are consoles simply for casual gamers and pc for the more serious and competitive?

Would you consider console gaming with a gaming monitor rather than a 60 inch plus TV to cut down on input lag and response time?

Above all what matters to you most in your gaming setup? What provides the best value in the short term and long term.

Would love to hear your thoughts.

I can't even tell the difference between 4k and 1080p; my eyes are the bottleneck already.  Have a PC hooked up to the living room TV via HDMI and won't be switching, as I don't want to be at the mercy of a walled garden.  I don't find input lag to be an issue at all, but I also mostly play single player games and I'm not a FPS guy.  Can't beat the choice that you get with PC, both with software and with configuring your rig.  Also fairly easy to acquire free games if you know where to look.

So with 4k its only really noticeable on a larger screen like a 55" TV so a 4k monitor is not all that useful. I prefer a higher refresh rate with the maximum detail in a game I can get. I currently use a 32" 1440p 144hz monitor which is in general much better for gaming.

The best way to get started is to look at the kind of budget your willing to spend on a gaming pc and look at builds online around that price range. You can use sites like pcpartpicker or you can get a pc made online from sites like Digital Storm Online, Origin, NZXT, and Maingear these can be really good as they give you warranty that is covered for the entire system and not just for the individual parts. If your into building your own gaming pc like me which is now a lot more easier to do then in the past can save you a lot of money as well. Nvidia has just released a new video card which outperforms its previous gen video cards by a lot, so its best to avoid purchasing a a 2000 series graphics card right now as well as AMD are releasing a new line of graphics cards to be announced on the 28th of Oct and getting a full release date some time after this announcement. I'm a huge gaming pc nerd so I love building my own pc and getting the best of the best so my gaming rig I am currently using cost upwards of 4000$ CAD

your going to want something like a Nvidia 3070 or whatever AMD is coming out with right now is not a good time to build a pc until more stock of the latest Graphics cards are available. If your looking to get started though use https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/ to get all of the best deals on parts. I recommend waiting for the newest CPU and GPUs to release. An AMD 5700X or 5600X CPU are predicting to be have much better performance than whats currently available and (https://www.amd.com/en/products/cpu/amd-ryzen-5-5600x) is going to be available soon so wait for the release of these CPUs and a combine it with a good gpu like one of these (https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/graphics-cards/30-series/rtx-3070/#:~:text=The GeForce RTX™ 3070,Starting At %24499.) or (https://www.pcgamer.com/amd-ryzen-big-navi-reveal/) As these products are supposedly superior to what is currently available and will be worth the wait to get them.

thanks for the info! is the 3070 better than the 5700xt or 2070 super?

I use console and PC. My PC is becoming rather outdated, I haven't add any new parts since 2016. I'm probably going to buy the new Series X Xbox for my 4K 50" tv.

Im currently rocking a 1060 GTX which runs 1080p at 120 fps on my 70hz monitor. I had mulled the idea of buying a 2070 super and getting a 144hz monitor, as that would cost me about the same as a Series X. Will eventually get all I want but for now I'm sticking with the Series X because I don't demand a lot of my PC anyways as I play mostly strategy games.

I use PC because I typically prefer the games on PC to the ones on console. I have consoles too, but I won't be buying a next gen one until well after they've been out for awhile and the price has been knocked down and they've built up a half decent library of games.

I will likely buy a PS4 once the price on those plummets because I went with the Xbox one last generation.

Alienware R7 with 32GB ram with upgraded PSU and a RTX 2060 Super, Corsair Void Pro head set, Corsair K70 KB, Corsair M65 mouse, Samsung 32 inch curved monitor.

Was going to get a Valve Index VR system, but ran out of cash.

Don't have the time to game much anymore, just play OverWatch once in a while.

yeah a 3070 aparently is supposed to out perform a 2080 Ti and cost far less then one too. Which is why I say to wait on buying pc parts right now getting the latest console is a much better option if your wanting to play on the latest consoles and look at building a pc early next year. Here is an example of why I say you should wait.

these are all the 3080s prices listed in USD.

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/shop/geforce/gpu/?page=1&limit=9&locale=en-us&category=GPU&gpu=RTX 3080

here is a price of a 2080 Ti just found one at random was the lowest price I seen for one.

https://www.amazon.ca/EVGA-GeForce-Gaming-08G-P4-3182-KR-Backplate/dp/B07VHSJ4GT/ref=sr_1_8?dchild=1&keywords=EVGA+2080+Ti&qid=1603642505&sr=8-8

and here is the performance differences between a 2080 Ti and a 3080

https://www.techspot.com/review/2099-geforce-rtx-3080/

as you can see the performance depends on the game but overall the 3080 is superior to a 2080 Ti at way less of a price point. Some predictions of the AMD GPU's coming out are saying they may be even faster then the Nvidia cards I doubt it but AMD has been known to surprise people every 10 years or so.

EDIT: Also the 3070 will be cheaper then a 3080 by a few hundred dollars. Also just read that the 3070 is going to be releasing on Oct 29th

I built one the other day for $1890 CDN

Ryzen 5 3600x
Radeon 5700xt OC Gaming

32GB DDR4

NVME 500GB
EVGA Supernova 750 G3

Case is subjective because everyone has different tastes but that ran me about $150.

This build is good enough to get you 4k in Flight Simulator except over major cities, probably.

It doesn't have the RGB spire which you can always swap out for later but the 3600 beats the 3700 for gaming

I'll be buying a GeForce RTX 3090 24gig card in a year or so when the price drops to around $1200-$1500. I just put a 1660 GTX Super in my rig as it was on sale and the price difference of going higher wasn't worth it as I plan to spend money on a (current) top of the line card down the road.

Currently use 2x Samsung 24 inch monitors but think I will upgrade to a high end curved 32inch or more.  I have 32 gigs of ram but will need to update the fan system and power supply when getting a new card.

I also plan to pick up a PS5 at some point. I am still using my 51 inch Samsung plasma TV.  No plans to upgrade it at the moment.

Simpsons and Ninja Turtles are next on my list. Street fighter was my fav game ever, can play it all day!
