Yes , he needs to have a defensive minded partner who's job is to back him up. However this is a team problem right now and no 170 lb D man is going to win physical battles against 200lb forwards. Hughes game is mobility and as long as the game is fluid he is great defensively and offensively. Right now they are turning over the puck and getting hemmed into their own zone. Board battles are not Hughes strengths and never will.

This is a team problem.

owen power or luke hughes on d for van would be huge win i can handle a tank. Trade for picks or young  prospects for edler pearson benn myers gaudette sutter beagle roussel. retain half cap on edler pearson so teams like leafs can fit them in under cap. also grab vets on expiring contracts as cap dumps for picks. In off season draft  decent and maybe trade some of picks as a way to get rid of   eriksson

Valid point, Schmidt so far haven't had the impact we hoped for and yes, it's obvious QH misses Tanev. That said, it's also obvious QH:s puck handling and skating is on a lower level compared to last season, regardless of partner.
