New Jersey Devils (2000 - Pres)

FREE AGENCY REPORT!

The New Jersey Devils are in the midst of presenting their first wave of contract offers as Free Agency has now opened.

The team is said to be looking to solidify the bottom six forward group and add a defenseman if possible.

The difficult decision was made to move on from forwards Patrice Bergeron, Tyler Bozak, and Brock McGinn. While defenseman Nick Leddy will be moving on as well.

The team has a few roster spots to fill and over $ 7 million in cap space to make it happen.

New Jersey has several players in the system on the cusp of pushing for roster spots so you can expect some flexibility at the depth / bubble positions where competition will be fierce.

Adding a couple more NHL veterans would be ideal over the off season and while the goaltending position is solid going into next season the team has been listening to what teams have to say on one of their NHL netminders.

As it stands Frederik Andersen may slide back into more of a 1a with the emergence of Antti Raanta's strong play this past post season and Jeremy Swayman is still battling for starts with nearly identical producing Linus Ullmark in Boston as the two trade starts.

Something to keep an eye on for certain, teams willing to move highend draft capital and NHL ready prospects should keep the lines if communication open.

New Jersey Devils (2000 - Pres)Puustinen signs!

The New Jersey Devils have come to terms with restricted free agent forward Valterri Puustinen on a two year deal. The 23 year old former seventh round pick has developed nicely in Atlantic City since signing with the Devils organization in 2019. Last season Valterri pushed his way onto the NHL scene getting one game in tallying an assist and staying up with the big club for long stretches of the season. He is poised to push for a roster spot as early as this fall in Training Camp. Thanks to agent @ThatMike for handling this important negotiation.

Valterri Puustinen has re-signed with the Devils on a two year deal that will pay him $ 1,000,000 per season over the next two seasons. It is expected that Valterri will compete for a roster spot out of camp this fall.

SIGNING: The Detroit Red Wings have signed restricted free agent Jake Evans a 3-year deal.

The Redwings are happy that Jake has accepted our offer and will be a redwing for another 3 years.

He stepped up his production from last year and spent some time on the penalty kill.

We look forward to seeing him at training camp.

This is just a question for the experts on contracts.

What is happening with Slafkovsky's contract with Montreal.

He was the number 1 pick yet he has a listed figure of $950, 000 for the next three years with a blue arrow and a 50 in a red circle ?

What does this mean in real life and does this sort of thing impact what we can offer our high draft picks?

I have done some research and can't come up with much.

In the NHL, entry level players are restricted to $950,000 in salary, the entry level max.  They can earn more than that if they hit performance bonus markers that are negotiated into their contract, but those don't hit the salary cap until the following season (unless the team has the excess cap room available, if I am not mistaken, not sure on that one). In GML, our ELC max contracts are higher because we included bonuses in the full cap hit to avoid confusion, surprise etc.

The blue arrow means the contract is eligible to slide if certain games played markers are not met.  The entry level slide means that the contract would not begin to expire until the following year, essentially adding a year to the duration of the deal.

The 50 in a red circle means that the contract does not count towards the 50 standard player contract limit imposed upon each NHL team.  I do not know what the exact parameters on this exemption is, but it seems that Slafkovsky's contract is exempt from the 50 contract limit.

It may be because he plays in Europe, and until he is actually over here, he is exempt (I could be wrong?)
