So back to the farm he went. It’s great to hear he’s doing well in Carolina tho, he was an awesome dman for our Utica club when he was our property. Benning chose not to retain him, as an RFA so he become a UFA and Carolina signed him last season. So that all happened before our current management come into place. I don’t see how we can blame our current management for letting him go, that was on Benning… its so funny how different fans view players. I couldn't stand Chatfiled, for me he couldn't be gone soon enough. But that was under different coaching and systems. In Carolina he appears to be doing well. Its why teams continue to take chances on these guys, you just never know what they can be under a new system. So we'll see, can Bear be that 2nd pair RHD, that would be so damn timely. Goal:thecup
So, with this trade we have several Petterssons, Pederson(s), etc. Has PA let the Pettersson Clones Project out of the bag? (Bettman: The Vancouver Canucks lose all their future draft picks for biological infractions.)

I could only think two things about Chatfield, we already have Hughes and that he was no where near Hughes in ability. and older. Hughes checks a lot of boxes is ways that will eclipse not smaller skilled D men. But he’s strong side gives up a weak side. we need a D man that can fill a void with Hughes and still be an presence in all three zones, like Hughes. I think, KB3. Ethan Bear has a lot of questions and a lot of opportunities to answer them. 1

MunKay
I simply don’t understand why someone could be upset with this. We got a solid depth RD, for what, a 5th round pick? What are the odds that the 5th round picks turns into a future RD stud? We have a need NOW, and management is addressing it. I believe we got a good group of players here and just need to supplement it properly. SHOW SOME LOVE FOR THE BOYS

Yeah he did not do well for us at the nhl level, he played way more solid in utica. Watching him play in Carolina now is what I saw of him in utica. He obviously fits with their team where he didn’t with ours. The reverse can hopefully be said about Bear on our team. He didn’t fit in Carolina but he sure seems like a good fit here. 1

I’d like to think when a player is drafted to a team and has feelings of reluctance to go there , or maybe that feeling never existed but because something crappy happens to after being there makes you want out ,which for bear is Exactly what happened in edm when drafted by edm he was young naive and close to home and possibly never expected the racism. But he found out and probably felt he couldn’t get out of there fast enough . Now he finds himself in Carolina 1state north of Georgia ya good team. But not the most comfortable spot for any visible minority. So now there’s this opportunity to finally land somewhere where you know native players are far more excepted , even revered (Gino) it’s no secret he’s wanted to be here. Bearing all that history in mind you would understand entering in he’s pretty pumped ,highly motivated but most of all happy to land somewhere where he knows none of the peripheral crap he had to endure doesn’t factor in. His agent says he’s in the best shape he’s ever been in ,even after the the long COVID bout. Being content about who your playing for is huge. No body knows more about having to bring your A game than bear is at this moment. I put my money on him doing just that. He’s going to be a fan favourite. And it won’t take long. GCG. Hairy Kneel
Given the crap he went through in Edm I'm sure he's happy to be out of there. But he's still a replacement player because of injuries to Pool and Stillman. Dermott never really showed up? Whatever this is a good chance for a player like Bear. Watched the video and he looks like an opportunistic shooter like Stecher, hopefully scores more. Plus Bear's defensive play has to be in order. RHD spots are open. ps I don't think Myrenburg is 5 years away, with his size and skating I thought he could make a shot in more like 2 or 3 years. Popular Post StanleyCupOneDay
There’s a whole lot of misunderstanding going on in this thread. So here’s the facts. Yes, Bear would have been available on waivers very soon, however there’s two problems with that if the Canucks wanted to pick him up. 1) We can’t afford his full cap price. So if we wanted to pick him off waivers we’d have to send someone else down to the AHL. There’s not many player choices available to do so without having them get sent through waivers where it’s possible we could lose them for nothing. That is, unless we send down any of these players exempt from waivers (which if capfriendly is correct says is the only options): Rathbone, Aman, Podkolzin, Höglander or Kuzmenko. The obvious choice would be Rathbone, but with most of our injuries being on D-men that isn’t a great option right now. In addition I highly doubt any of these guys make it through without being claimed by another team. So those upset about asset management would be even more angry if we picked Bear up on waivers only to lose another asset for nothing. We have $38k of cap space available right now, without Carolina retaining we couldn’t afford Bear. Also 2) If we wanted him for our team it’s highly likely someone else in front of us on the waiver ranking list would have picked him up before us. D’s are extremely valuable in today’s NHL, more so then at any other time, so any free asset with potential will have a lineup of teams chomping at the bit. Because they’re so sought after, the only way you can get one is to draft/develop which takes 5ish years, take a risk on someone who’s price is low due to a recent falloff in play, or you pay an exorbitant amount, which we cannot afford to do so with our thin prospect pool. I would be upset if we traded Höglander as rumored or a 2nd round pick or even a 3rd round pick for a guy who hasn’t figured out the NHL yet, but a 5th? That’s not really much to pay. A 5th round pick has something like a 8% chance of playing over 100 games in the NHL. In about 5 years from the draft day. Yes, you could get one of those blue chip D or F players that change a teams dynamic, but those are few and far between. Bear himself has already played more games then 92% of players picked in the 5th round. In another sense we’re giving up an 8% chance of getting an Ethan Bear in 5 years from now for getting an Ethan Bear right now. https://dobberprospects.com/2020/05/16/nhl-draft-pick-probabilities/amp/ Worst case scenario he doesn’t workout and we let him walk at the end of the year so we lose a 8% shot at a NHL player. We aren’t tied to him or his contract, but you can bet if he plays even semi-decently given the demand for D-men there’ll be a Cup contending team that will give us at least a 5th at trade deadline for him, most likely more. Or we keep him as he proves to be better then his current value would indicate. There’s not a lot of risk for us to lose on this one. We also got another prospect in the deal, which for those who want us to have an abundance of draft picks should be happy with because it’s another chance at a good player we paid nothing extra for. Obviously it’s extremely unlikely Pederson amounts to anything, but that’s true for the vast majority of draft picks made outside the 1st round. Lastly the argument that a player doesn’t help a team or a team loses a trade unless they win a Stanley Cup is ridiculous and far too rigid analysis. Otherwise 95% of all trades ever made are losses if you view that to be the case. Obviously the goal for every team is to win it all, but a player can help a team regardless of what happens in the playoffs. You’re conflating two issues as one: whether a player traded can make enough of a difference to bring a Cup to a team with whether a player can make any difference at all. The two are not the same. It’s extremely rare for 1 trade to take a team from not winning a Cup to winning a Cup. Most Stanley Cup winners made numerous trades to create their rosters, it’s not just one. Now that Bear is a Canuck though I hope all people regardless of opinions wish him well on our team and want him to prove the doubters wrong to become an integral part of our team that we stole from Carolina for a pittance. 4 2 8
