We're one Graves or Marcus Pettersson away from a decent defence now. Just have to figure out a way to get rid of OEL and/or Myers.

Boeser + Myers for Zucker + Pettersson + Jeff Carter

A swap of bad contracts but also quality mixed in there too. We let Zucker go, maybe buyout (or hopefully he retires) Carter in the offseason, we shed 12M and we get a 26yo solid LD to play with Hronek. Use the leftover cash in the offseason to sign a 3C and heck why not another defenceman (8m there).

Pettersson - Hronek

Hughes - Mayfield

OEL - Bear

Dermott

That actually looks like a respectable defense. There could very well be some good and not too old 3C options this free agency.

David Kampf, Tyson Jost, Frederick Gaudreau, and Nick Bjugstad might all hit the market.

This isn't the debate, though. It's potentially fair value, although many pundits have said they think we overpaid, which I agree with.

Again, it's about philosophy on how to build a contending team. Do you want to go down the path of Lou Lam or Yzerman?

Philosophy of building a contending team?  How was St. Louis built, how was Pitts built?  Not every team is built by stockpiling draft picks.

They've already built the core, now it's about finding the right support guys

He said we are a worse team with Hronek, Beauvillier and Raty than just keeping Horvat.  That tells me he knows nothing about hockey.  Beau literally has more points than BO.  You add a top 4 D and a 3C minimum with Raty, how is that worse than just keeping a 2C?

I think we have to also realize there is something positive happening in Lazars Face off work,  he’s 51.9 % .. (52)

that is something to work with in that “specialist “ type of role.

I hear that. It's such a weird situation to be in. On one hand I love this trade. But on the other, I don't like it at all and think it's a rushed decision to try and win sooner rather than later, when I believe we should be playing the Yzerman game and not the Lou Lam/Benning game.

I agree, though my only issue with the deal is timing

St. Louis bought at the right time when they were a top team whereas Pitts drafted franchise/generational players in Crosby, Malkin, Letang, and Fluery, and then bought, bought, bought because they were contending teams.

I compare it to what Lou Lam is doing lately, selling their last four 1st rounders in a row plus Raty, all while trying to squeak into the playoffs. We've now sold three of our last four 1st rounders, plus a 2nd, and more. Yet we're both shouldn't be in win-now modes, with two of the worst prospect pools in the league. And then Yzerman, who is in a better situation to make the playoffs than us, sells at this year's TDL to recoup two 1sts and a 2nd.

Tell Petterson and Hughes you want to win later and see if they want to stick around...

I thought that we would look for RHD scraps this summer, not at the trade deadline.

Exactly this. It's where we are and need to see through with this core. The perpetual rebuild crowd isn't happy - and yes, I don't like losing that 1st - but we have to make good on what Petey, Hughes, Demko, etc, were told about building around them ... or they walk.

Later, as in a year or two later, after drafting high and well this year and next. If this expedited plan doesn't work out, what is our prospect pool going to look like once we realize again that we should rebuild?

JR and Allvin have traded none of Vancouver’s 1st rounders.  They traded one they acquired via another trade to fill a glaring need.  I’m not sure how close Detroit is to making the playoffs, only time will tell.  Yes they have a nice prospect pool but how will those prospects develop and transition to the NHL?  Both Seider and Raymond have regressed in their 2nd years.  On paper Detroit isn’t all that impressive and I wonder if it’s a case of Husso stealing then some games like Demko did last year for  Vancouver.

I mean when we’re stealing other teams top 10 pick players who needs our own?

Seems like the plan.

Yet, Yzerman sees that writing on the wall and sells high on Hronek as well as Bertuzzi. Why can he see the writing but we cannot?

Agree 100%

Yes, he is an offensive defenseman but his ideal partner should also have some offensive acumen. If Hughes is in the offensive zone his partner will be as well and I can see the argument that the partner should have some complementary offensive skills (eg. a good shot).
