[Discussion] Roberto Luongo Trade Thread (Keep all discussion here)

If teams are only offering up lousy players, then that means Lou will be a Canuck until there is a decent offer to be had. I would hope he can be mature and play whatever role the Canucks put him in, likely a 50-50 game split. Last season, I thought the Canucks should have started Lou in home games and Schneider on the road since Lou seems to play better at Rogers. This is especially true in the playoffs.

Please. Kesler was a "solid 3rd line center" from the day he was drafted. Show me one person who expected him to be a 40-goal scorer.

He's big and young, yes, but neither of those makes him good. Just chose to ignore his AHL production, eh? Convenient.

As for Petrovic and/or Bjugstad, neither help the Canucks now. Now should be the focus, which is why my Komisarek proposal made sense, because you're addressing both the now and the future. Both Komi & Franson would be on the team today, and I would venture a guess that Kadri would make the team a lot quicker than, say, Schroeder would (compare their AHL stats).

I think you need to take a step back and remember the context of this team; the window is closing, if it hasn't shut already. If you believe that we're a contender, it's time to load up, or we could be waiting a loooooong time to be a contender again.

All it takes is one concerned, even panicked, rival GM who sees another playoff possibility going down the tubes (and in no small part because of inconsistent goaltending) for him to pick up the phone and give Gillis what he wants. Gillis can take all the time he needs until trade deadline the next year we see hockey. All that matters is the trade itself.

And the problem with "waiting" is that what do you think will happen to Luongo's perceived value as he rots away on our bench? How would other teams explain to their fanbase that they traded player X or prospect Y for Vancouver's 33 year-old backup goaltender with a 10-year, big money contract?

No, that's not all it takes. Roberto needs to agree to the destination. And his next destination is where he'll be spending the next 10 years of his life, so it makes sense that he's going to hold out for what he wants.

Garth Snow could wake up one morning and be convulsing in panic, offer John Tavares, Kyle Okposo, and Calvin de Haan, Roberto Luongo will not accept a trade to Long Island. For this deal to work, the trade partner both must have a need for a goaltender and be a place that Luongo is willing to move to for the next decade. These two constraints dwindle the pool of buyers to a handful, at the most.

Vancouver might be forced to take whatever scraps Florida is offering, because that might be the only place that Roberto is willing to move to.

Luongo spoke to the media prior to the Jake Milford Golf Tournament today. Some interesting statements:

Still willing to lift no trade clause but has not been asked yet

Happy to be in Van for the golf tournament to spend some time with his team mates

"Not the worst thing in the world" - re: the situation

Has some good friends on the team

CBA is obviously affecting his status

Trying to make sure he's ready to play when the season starts

If he's not traded before the season starts he's happy to play here. Don't want to be a distraction and doesn't mind playing here.

The fact that he has lots of good friends on the team and in the staff makes it easier to be here

Has never given a "5 team list" to MG in terms of trade cities

Thinks it's disrespectful to his team mates to discuss possible trade destinations

Plans on skating with the team while he's here

Hopes CBA is resolved as quick as possible

Won't speculate on scenarios

Florida is not the ONLY possible destination

When Cory re-signed he didn't see how he would still be a Canuck. Now he sees it as a possibility. He and Cory have a great relationship so it won't be a problem to have to play with him.

Vancouver is "home" too for his family. Not the worst thing to be here.

Will not put pressure on the Canucks to get a deal done. No animosity. Canucks are a classy organization. He's playing with guys he loves.

His son elbowed him in the face (hence the black eye lol)

It looks more and more Like Gillis is going to do what he did with Cody to Luongo, in that play up his trade value by winning him some games and making him look good, then trading when his value is peaking. Much like Hodgson.

That said I don't expect this to be a TD deal if there is a season. Teams can't afford to wait that long, it will be one of those David Booth type trades that comes up out of nowhere.

75% sure he plays at least 1 more game in a vancouver uniform. 95% sure he ends the season with someone else

You seriously take these guys at their word with respect to what they say to the media?

Mike Gillis FLAT-OUT-LIED on Team Radio when he was asked if he had qualified M-A Gragnani. He said "Yes"; it was an utter lie.

And let's not forget that Cody Hodgson was once described as a man of the highest character imaginable, who came from a great family, was an undeniable leader, Mike Gillis wanted him to marry his daughter, etc. Then, he got traded, and he somehow became an annoying, selfish, spoiled, brat, in the span of about 48 hours.

Most of these guys (Gillis especially) have no respect for the media at all, and it shows. They'll say whatever will end the interview the quickest, and that's about it. Honestly, what did Luongo say today that was even a slight surprise? What did you expect? For him to show up in a rage, throwing his stick around and yelling like a madman, "TRADE ME! TRAAAAAADE MEEEEEEEE!"

The two main things that he said was that he has a lot of respect for the organization, and that they've always treated him well. Uh, yeah, a 12-year, $64M deal might have something to do with that. He also said that "there are worse things in life" than being brought back to the Canucks to start the year; uh, yeah, again, thanks, Captain Obvious. He's really not saying anything.

To be honest, my biggest takeaway from the whole thing was how sad it's gonna be when he's actually gone. He seems to have finally grown up - a completely different guy than the guy who came here in '06. It'd be a pretty amazing thing to see him raise Lord Stanley some day.
