Time Capsule - Prediction thread for 2015-16 season

Canucks make play-offs Middle of the pack. 4th

Horvat gets 50 pts.

Vey plays solid and gets 30 points.

The younger defense plays well enough to make miller look good.(Markstrome finishes year with a Miller injury)

Benning looks like a Genius for Sbisa signing.

Henrick and Daniel have better years this year than last year.(Better offense from back end adds 10 points to their totals)

They donèt play Calgary in the play-offs. Have a tough battle that is won or lost in Overtime on a very bad penalty call.

Virtanaen looks good first 15 games but struggles.

shinkaruk is lighting up the AHL and cdc is calling his name.

Barecheese looks really good but seems to lack finnish, still gets 20+ goals.

Youth movement is healthy and we draft same spot as last year.

Canucks challenge for a playoff spot, Benning makes another bad trade to try and increase the team's chances.
(After seeing some of the panic moves made I wouldn't be surprised if he went down that route).

Sedins fight through the physical Pacific Division defenses, but it takes a toll on them (similar story with Vrbata) and they score around 60 pt. each. Burrows is back with them, and they find new ways to be creative and score.

Sven starts off hot and CDC thinks he's the next savior; he ends season with around 30 points and people want him gone.

Bo and Bones both challenge for 40 points, going the team needed center depth (think most people would agree with this)

Familiar story for most of the middle-six guys (Ronnie, Hansen, Higgins, Vey ==> around 30 points each)

Fourth line largely spends time in their own end due to lack of NHL-level 4th line center.

Clendening gets around 25 points, largely in PP passing role. Bartkowski's time here is forgettable, hated with Luca.

Adam and Frank push Weber down the lineup but Frank and Weber battle throughout the year while Adam sticks due to his PP ability. One of them gets waived and picked off.

Pedan has decent limited time as the physical guy and plays safe if unspectacular minutes with big crunches and fights.

Miller gets wins against weak teams but struggles through the season, fans want Lack back, but he has a statement game against Carolina just to silence the critics for the time being. Markstrom busts (gets a couple wins but lets in way too many goals in blowout losses) and Bachman's the steady limited minutes backup.

Fans are still confused about how the GM wants the team to be, and he sells the vets for future players to come in but they remain competitive enough to stay in the mix to end up 9th, and fans want the team to tank given the struggles. The team fully embraces the sell-off of peripheral vets the following post-season. That's when the team climbs back to respectability.

I guess for now I'll just say we play well enough that JB doesn't unload at the DL, UNLESS of coarse, he moves either Hamhuis or Spisa soon, because Hutton's just so damn smooth.

So hard to say figure what's what with which team right now.

Our prospects have been "real good" in preseason, McCann and Hutton specifically, Gaunce and Virt looked pretty great too, with a group of young guys pushing like that I have hope for the future.

Even though the twins have been invisible in preseason, I still expect them to be 70ish pt guys.

So- 3rd in the Pacific, frack the Lames, I don't care if I'm wrong either.

If we finish 9-10th in the west. I yell at my TV and cry a little. Then, I slowly pack away all of my memorabilia into its box, hang my head, pout, then reassure myself that "there's always next year". I then cry again and numb myself with copious quantities of beers and doobies. But I do that every year.

Pacific- (West Conf. final pos.)

Hank and Dank regress a little, especially towards the end of the season, call it about a 60 points each with Daniel getting the last 20 goal season of his career. Vrbata is traded at the deadline, fetching a low 1st from the Caps.

The Killer B's (Baertschi, Bonino and Burrows) form a somewhat steady, two way line with none getting 20, but all three more than 15.

Triple H (Higgins, Horvat and Hansen) form a very steady, two way line with Horvat getting right at 20, and Higgins getting traded at the deadline, back to NYI, for a 3rd. Hansen does his normal tease, but also normal stone hands, but gets a little meaner with age.

Prust, Vey and Grenier form the 4th line, to start the season. Vey plays better, but is traded around game 30-35, as he can't win a faceoff, and Cassels is tearing up the AHL as a 3rd liner. Prust scores 8, Grenier gets 11 and looks to be a bottom six force for quite some time. Cassels gets notice league wide, and yes he shuts down McJesus every time we play the Oilers, causing Eichel to win the rookie of the year instead.

Gaunce gets called up a couple of times, gets his 1st goal and then replaces the recently traded Higgins, playing decent but a little shaky.

Jensen gets called up once, does quite well, goes back down, then called up again to replace the recently traded Vrbata and plays decently well; he's then traded after the season to improve draft position.

Shinkaruk starts out great, gets one call up, but is injured around game 40 in Utica and only gets back in time to help Utica in the playoffs (where the Comets get the AHL title, this time!)

Fox makes the Comets, scores 25, and looks to replace Burrows in the 2017-18 season, as his skating improves dramatically.

Virtanen and McCann both shine, both over 100 points, both play for Team Canada, and both play VERY well for Utica in the playoffs (which is why Utica wins it all).

Sbisa improves slowly throughout the season, until we end up looking back after the year is over and realize...D**n, he got a lot better!

Hamhuis resigns on a 2yr contract, doesn't get traded.

Weber plays great on the PP, but basically sucks everywhere else, gets traded at the deadline to the Rangers, who desperately need PP help; Hutton gets promoted and we forget all about Weber as Hutton plays really good.

Pedan gets a couple of looks, gets in one game against the Kings, and both beats the crap out of Lucic, but breaks his hand...ruining an otherwise promising season.

Miller plays...meh. Markstrom plays...somewhat better but not enough to wash out the bad taste from trading Lack.

We end up with a record of 43-34-5, missing the playoffs, but getting a top ten pick.

1. Canucks miss the playoffs. Le's hope we win the lottery or at least come second. If not we end up picking in the 7-12 range.

2. Sedins have point totals in the mid-60s. Still very good for their age but some decline from last year.

3. Vrby and Hammer traded at the deadline, probably for first round picks but maybe for prospects. (Although I am worried that Benning might not follow through on this.)

4. One or two additional deals are made at the deadline to get lower picks. (Maybe Higgins, maybe Weber. maybe Prust, etc.)

5. Horvat continues to make progress and is a very good 3C, maybe takes over from Bonino as 2C by year-end.

6. Miller is so-so, giving rise to goalie controversy (not that most people would ever expect that in Vancouver).

7. Baertschi makes a decent showing but is borderline at 2LW. Solid 2LW the year after.

8. Virtanen plays 9 games then goes back to Junior.

9. Kenins, Sbisa, Prust and Dorsett are somewhat disappointing. They all play hard and contribute to the physical game but they don't score enough and make too many mistakes.

10. Good progress for the Utica prospects -- Gaunce, Shrink, Pedan, maybe Subban, Hutton. Grenier gets some time with the Canucks and is decent at 4RW.

11. Canucks have a big draft in 2016, re-sign Hammer, and make a run at a high-end free agent in July 2016. Might be in contention for the playoffs the following year.

Tragoedia's Official Season Predictions

1. Standings look something like this in the West.

  1. Anaheim
  2. Calgary
  3. Vancouver
  4. Nashville
  5. Winnipeg
  6. Chicago
  7. Minnesota
  8. St. Louis
  9. LA
  10. Dallas
  11. Edmonton
  12. Colorado
  13. San Jose
  14. Arizona

2. The Season will something like this for the Western Conference

Vancouver will make the playoffs simply by playing in a weak division. The Central will dominate again, but our division will struggle. LA will struggle to again regain chemistry and the team will start to meltdown. Calgary will regress from last year but still finish ahead of us. Anaheim will feast on easy points and contend for the Presidents trophy because of it. Edmonton will make some real improvements but still finish outside of the playoffs, but they will feel good knowing that they almost made it if they had only about 5-12 more points. San Jose will drop like a rock in a lake and the team will need to be blown up. Arizona hasn't finished their tire fire yet and will spend another season at the bottom praying for a top draft pick, which they will get.

In the Central, Nashville will again be a great regular season team and contend for the Presidents trophy. They will have some really unbeatable stretches and some quite average stretches, but it will be enough to get one of the top spots in the Central. Winnipeg will become a dominate force and will become a team that bullies other teams around, charging their way to second or third in their division. Chicago will play like a very average team in the regular season, with post-season fatigue slowing them down, but they will still make the playoffs much like how the Red Wings always seem to. Minnesota will have some really bad stretches, but will also go on some goalie driven runs that will be enough to make the playoffs. St. Louis will have an up and down year, but it will be enough to make the playoffs in a wild card spot. Dallas will find themselves again in the unenviable position of barely looking in to the playoffs, being a few points shy. Colorado will have another season struggling with being mediocre in a cut throat division.

3. The Trade Deadline

At the trade deadline, Benning will see that our postseason chances our miniscule and that we could barely make it past the first round, if that. For that, he unloads one or a few high profile vets, such as Vrbata, Higgins, or Hamhuis for some juicy picks. The Canucks rally around the empty roster spots and proceed to go on a mini run late in the season to make the playoffs, barely. They get lucky based on the weakness of the division.

4. The Youth

Horvat will continue to improve but start off the season slow and suffer some of the sophomore slump. But, during the season he will improve his play and become one of the go-to guys on the team at 20/21 years old, pushing over 40 points and slowly playing heavier and heavier defensive minutes. Kenins will improve a bit, becoming a more consistent energy player in the bottom six. Baertschi will show flashes of brilliance and will disappear for stretches, but will do enough to hold a roster spot heading into next season. He also scores 40+ points. Virtanen will get a nine game tryout, everyone will debate about whether he is ready but in the end he will be sent down. CDC will melt down for a couple weeks before settling down. Corrado and Clendening will do serviceable jobs on the bottom 4 pairings, but nothing flashy. Jensen will get another tryout but will again not do enough to justify a roster spot. Gaunce will also get a shot, and will show promise for the next year.

5. The Vets

The Sedins will have another strong season, again putting up 65-75 points and Burrows will ride shotgun once again for most of the year. Vrbata will again score 30+ goals and be one of the key reasons we win just enough games to get into the playoffs. Bonino will have an average offensive season, potting around 40-50 points, benefiting from Vrbata, who also helps Baertschi. Higgins will probably play a bottom six role and score probably around 30-35 points. Hansen will be similar, but probably will get around 25-30. Dorsett and Prust have a decent season and show nice bottom line chemistry. Vey will struggle to find a role in the lineup.

Edler-Tanev will form the backbone of our defense and will be the most consistent pairing we have. Everything will fall on them. Their offense will be lacking compared to many other top pairings, but they will play a strong two way game that we live or die by. Hamhuis and Sbisa will form another pairing that will be inconsistent, showing flashes of brilliance and other stretches of struggle. Sbisa will improve upon last season and start to be a more prominent defenseman, but still will be prone to error, much like Bieksa pre-2010. Weber, Bartowski, Clendening, and Corrado will rotate through the bottom 3 slots through injuries and healthy scratches. Weber will be our top PP guy for much of the season, but his defensive game will have him scratches for certain matchups.

Miller will play average from our perspective. He will hold together the team with his veteran presence, but will be criticized for not doing more. Still, he will be a vital piece for making the playoffs and will win a bunch of games the team had no business winning. Markstrom will play average for most of the season, with some good games and some forgettable games. In doing so he will show improvement heading into next season, where he will make even bigger strides towards becoming a solid starting netminder.

6. How the fans will feel

Vancouver fans will spend the entire season whining. They will complain about being not good enough and blame everyone in the organization, down to the janitor, and scream that they want everyone fired. When this does not happen they will cry themselves to sleep. When the season is over there will be a fire Benning movement, but management will stick the course and plow ahead into next season, where more young guys are put into the lineup and we select a few more awesome picks.

7. The Playoffs

We will be eliminated in the first round. Much sadness will be felt at another first round exit. Tampa will win the cup over Anaheim.

These are my honest predictions, but playing the crystal ball game is so difficult as random chance has such a large role to play. Either way, it will be interesting to see how many of my predictions come true.

Might update again before season starts, but as it stands this is my official prediction.

*EDIT* Will have to update with Bonino/ Clendening out and Sutter in. I will probably fix this closer to October.

My predictions for this season are as follows:

Management:

- Jim Benning continues to take flak during the season, and frustrates the fanbase at the deadline when again dealing away players for less than our perceived valuations. However come the draft, we have four 2nds and four 3rds to accompany our two 1sts, and the draft sees us move up and pick a franchise player. He ultimately comes out on top and everyone praises him.

- Trevor Linden looks glorious and handsome all season, makes smart comments and does nothing to make CDC question the direction of the franchise.

Coaching:

- Willie Desjardins struggles in his second season, with the Pacific being a tough division and his team decimated by injuries, trades and under-performance. He leans heavily on those players he trusts - Sedins, Bonino, Vey, Dorsett - and this only deepens the problems. Come the end of the season there are question marks on his ability to get the best out of the team as his use of certain players causes us all to have sleepless nights.

- Roland Melanson spends considerable time with Markstrom and is vaunted for his efforts.

- Doug Lidster does not fix the issues on the D and as a consequence our D looks terrible, again.

- Travis Green struggles in Utica due to the sheer volume of turnover on his roster, although he brings on the kids nicely anyway.

- Ron Delorme is finally fired.

League position:

- 6th in the Pacific.

- 25th in the league.

- 33 wins with 8 OT/SO wins.

- Reduced scoring and increased goals against.

Canucks Players:

- Daniel and Henrik regress, but still lead the team in scoring. In a feisty, physical and fast Pacific Division they begin to look their age.

- Vrbata scores less, bounces between the top two lines again and is ultimately traded. Not many CDC posters are sad to see him depart.

- Bonino continues to struggle in the face off dot and his scoring doesn't improve, despite having Baertschi on his flank.

- Baertschi starts well but flags quickly, and is demoted to 4LW by the end of the season.

- Burrows does his usual, 15g 20a, not justifying the contract he should never have been given.

- Horvat grows steadily but doesn't add the offense to his game - 20g 15a but as the season ends, he becomes 2C.

- Higgins is miserable all season, barely registering for a 10g 10a season before being traded at the deadline for a 3rd.

- Hansen is his usual self, 15g 15a

- Kenins is a hard working 4th line option but isn't used enough.

- Dorsett gets over 200PIMS as he's fighting nearly every night.

- Prust puts up 250PIMS as he's rammed all over the shop by bigger guys.

- Vey does not improve and by the end of the season is enjoying the comforts of the press box as the local media has dumped on the kid.

- Blair Jones gets a call-up and performs admirably as 4LC, replacing Vey and giving us a solid draw.

- Miller struggles for consistency and injuries/performances allow Markstrom to start 40 games.

- Markstrom has good stats and appears poised to be the starter in 16/17.

Utica / junior players:

- Hunter Shinkaruk has a much improved season, leading the Comets in scoring and looking like a threat to all defenses.

-

The rest is TBC.

1. Anaheim - 105 points
2. Vancouver - 99 points
3. LA
4. Calgary
5. San Jose
6. Edmonton
7. Arizona

Canucks make the playoffs with just under 100 points. Calgary's playoffs hopes go right down to the final two games. Edmonton doesn't suck earning 82 points. Arizona continues to suck. They will be the only team in the West to truly suck, but there will be fewer 100 point teams this time around.

1. St. Louis Blues - 100-105 points
2. Minnesota Wild - 100-105 points
3. Nashville Predators - 100-105 points
4. Chicago Blackhawks
5. Winnipeg Jets
6. Dallas Stars
7. Colorado Avalanche

Chicago is paying too much to Kane and Toews, so they won't be able to adjust to any problems they have on D, but they will make the playoffs, barely. Top spot wont be decided till the final game of the season. Every team will earn at least 90 points. Winnipeg will battle for the final spot in the playoffs, but will lose out to Calgary.
