God no! That is why I feel our GM has done a lackluster job getting suitable depth to so called help our AHL team and our prospects on it. Can target College

You mean like Madden?

Like say, Graovac,

or a younger player in Europe

Well Costmar's 18 and a point per game in 10 games, but if you didn't want to wait so long Linus Karlsson is looking like he could be a surprise.

or the KHL to be a top 6 C in Utica.

We might want to cross our fingers and pray, but there is Zhukenov.

But in general, the center situation for Utica looks like it could pick up next year.

We've been hearing next year every year and this is the fourth straight season with inadequate depth at center down on the farm.  Two games into the season and Jonah Gadjovich one of your top prospects in Utica was being centered by Dyson Stevenson.  Not familiar with Dyson Stevenson?  Probably because he is 26 years old and has played a total of 11 AHL games including the two this year with the Comets,  He is a career ECHLer better known for his fights than his play-making ability.

So injuries and Gaudette.  Would you send Gaudette down in spite if his play.  The Lou issue has also hit Utica in a way, two NHL caliber players in Baer and Goldy are playing in Utica.

Sorry their wingers, but Gravoac will heal.  As for 7 centers in Van, yes that's pretty normal at the NHL level.

It's the first month of a long season, maybe take a breath.  The issue is likely being looked into.  Other teams also like to have extra centers so they are harder to acquire.

Utica has an NHL caliber d man in OJ atm too.  The parent club went thru major changes this off season needs 20 games to settle things down.

Enjoy the win from Saturday.

Gaud may have earned a spot in the NHL, but it wouldn't have done any harm to see him go down and play top C role in all situations in my opinion. Would play a ton, get lots of special teams time and would likely help the team and fill a much needed C hole in Utica.

Sending Sven and Goldy down, sends skill but they are wingers. Good to have as I feel they could help Lind out going forward. Also, would it have been the worst thing to keep Gaunce around and let him play C down in the A? Seemed to do well in Utica, guess we never offered him a contract or he wanted a change/felt Boston was a better move?

JB has an obligation to do what's best for the Canucks and Gaudette.  The Comets are part of the equation but not JB's sole focus.

Being an advocate for the Comets is welcome and great.  I do appreciate the perspective.

Utica has been waiting year after year for depth tho. Our NHL injuries always take the depth from the farm

It's about off season planning for the farm that is always lacking.  I had zero expectations that Gaudette would be in Utica and never once advocated that he should be.  He should never had been in any plan for constructing an AHL roster.  Dyson Stevenson, Wacey Hamilton and Carter Bancks should not be centering any legitimate prospects that JB would like to see developed in Utica.

I know. So have we in Vancouver. I wonder if the 2 things might be connected. Last year we were weak at center. We had to have a guy come up to fill in for Sutter. He should have been yours in Utica.

This year he belongs on the Canucks and they tell us this new guy JT Miller can play center. Guys in the comments above tell us there are 7 centers now and apparently that's just like a regular NHL team. Anything leftover now goes to Utica. Come to think of it aren't Roussel and Motte due to return soon? Doesn't Schaller play center? Think he'd still make it through waivers?

Imagine if Gaudette hadn't been quite ready and Schaller zipped through waivers to play center in Utica. That's how close you are to being packed at center now. And it's looking like next year you could get even closer.

Well the Comets play their home opener today vs. the Crunch (their main rival) at 4:00 pm PST.  Getting into their regular schedule with games Friday and Saturday.

There was always potential that Gaudette could be sent down, but of course there needed to be a plan if he did make the team. Hence why we signed Graovac and Camper. Jasek may be a converted winger, but they seem to like what they see as he was tried at center in camp and preseason. Hamilton and Bancks are decent bottom 6 centers. Dyson Stevenson is only temporary until Graovac is back. There is still potentially the possibility that Gaudette is sent down (not for poor play, but to get some minutes). We could see Madden, Karlsson, and Focht as early as next season.

End of 1st  vs Syracuse - Comets tied 2 - 2 .  Gave up a pp late goal and an earlier shorty where Juolevi was outmuscled.  Gadjovich with the Comets goal on a sweet deflection.  Mikey making his AHL debut in goal. Blujus with the equalizer with just seconds left in the period

First period impressions.......

Juolevi very much still a work in progress.  A few great passes, a couple of gaffes, and was definitely the goat on the shorty Crunch goal

DiPietro having a good start to his AHL career.  No chance on the shorty, shot from an impossible angle

Rafferty and Teves displaying all the savvy of vets, both having a great game

Baer and Goldy on the same line, centered by Jasek.  Some nice plays, Sven noticeably going to the hard areas this game

Lind and Gadjovich having strong games

Bailey. - what to say?  Makes Bure and Virtanen seem pedestrian when he is free wheeling with the puck. - so fast

Francis Perron makes it 3-2 Comets

Now 4 - 2 as Lind sends Boucher in on a breakaway

5 -2 on a fantastic Goldy pass to Zack for a tap in on a 2 man breakaway

Period ends 5 -2

Goldobin with a setup to MacEwen that is just amazing. Boucher had just scored before it for his fifth in three games.  DiPietro with his AHL debut after his NHL debut last year.  The Comets are thrashing Syracuse so far tonight after the Crunch had owned them five games to zero last year. Goldobin and Baertschi clearly NHLers playing down a level - are they subject to waiver claims if we need to bring them back up? But there are a lot of players on this edition of the Comets that are really superior players at this level: Boucher, MacEwen, Bailey, Lind, Rafferty, Teves, Brisebois, and now Juolevi seems to be getting his game pace on. Gadjovich also has his first of the year.

The Comets last year ineptitude against Syracuse (the Lightning farm team) is understandable - the Crunch had the second best AHL regular season record last year. Now, there is still a period left and there is most of a season to play, but Utica is dominating this game. There is still a season to go - with injuries and call-ups, from which the Comets suffered considerably last year (and unhappiness from Euro players Dahlen and Palms dragging the team down). But this year the kids are a year older and the vets appear committed to climbing back into Canuck uni. The team is really a pleasure to watch, and not that expensive - I think about 70 bucks for the season. You might want to give it a go if you can’t get enough NHL hockey.
