  1. Is this true though? I feel like (and thought the advance stats backed it up) that last season was Meyers best in Vancouver so far? Him and OEL were really solid together. I think Meyers is the type of Dman that can do well next to a solid and reliable defensive style partner. He has good qualities like size and a decent amount of physicality (except when it morphs into dumb penalties). Also not the worst skater either. Our main issue with Meyers in Vancouver is just part of the larger D-core problem. There is no structure and it isn't built with smart pairings in mind. Our Dman have been swapping partners for years at this point, with the hope something will stick and work out. Hopefully we can move him this offseason, not get much back but also not have to pay. Or next season at the deadline if he has a decent year in Van under the new group, we retain 50% and move him to a playoff team who is needing another RHD and has a spot available. That is a big boy that can play a lot and can move up the lineup in a playoff run if needed. Otherwise worst case he plays another year in Van then the contract expires. $6 million in cap freed up just as Hronek (and some other young players) might have a new deal kicking in.
  2. I'd even go further and say Risto is worse. If we look at OEL just as a Canucks he actually played 1 solid season on a terrible D team and then had 1 bad season (reportedly hurt). No to Risto, we don't need another big roaming Dman that can't handle the D side of the game very well.
  3. Like the general ideas you have going on even if I'd tweak them personally. Agreed we need a 3C. Whoever is the best fit we can find at a reasonable cap hit. As said above Kampf might be a solid defensive 3C who doesn't break the bank. Meyers I'd love to move, but wouldn't want to pay anything more than a 5th round pick to do it. Otherwise just hold onto him, either we get an offer for him at the deadline from a team really needing Dman or he expires at the end of the season. We need some decent draft picks, so I'd rather not give one up. Domi is a fun idea, but I don't think we need more wingers at this time. I actually think they should move out one of Beau, Garland or Boes. Free up that cap space and use it to sign a top 4 defensive Dman (preferably RD but LD is fine if not, maybe they can even play on their off side). Another positive about moving out a winger is it frees up a roster spot for some of the Abby guys to try and make the team. Hoglander, Podz, PDG, Aman, Karlsson and maybe even Kratsov are all guys who are likely fighting for spots/want to climb higher up into the lineup. That isn't even all our young guys who might start trying to push into the big club over the next few years.
  4. It makes sense we all hate hearing it brought up again to Canucks fans. It gives an already tragic ending to a wonderful cup run a horrible, bitter taste. But the reality is it was a terrible thing encouraged by people who were never really there for the actual game/team. Like many have said the riots were gonna happen regardless, but that also makes Van look bad and doesn't excuse anything. I get why ESPN wants to cover it, I'm sure it'll be another interesting look at the event. I hope they talk about the many people who went and helped clean up afterwards. Those were solid humans. So let the story be told and moved on from. I hope we never have this happen again over a hockey game. Instead when this team finally lifts that cup I'm hoping the whole province is celebrating together.
  5. Why do you think Zadina is worth more than either of those two players? Not saying they would completely jump at the deal, but no chance there isn't different types of value going back both ways.
  6. You go on to answer this yourself, but he reportedly had a bad foot injury in the offseason and it never fully recovered and he tried playing through it. Like most players often try doing. With OEL we have 2 seasons with him on Van. In his first he was a pleasant surprise, carried Meyers and played really solid. In his second he was very bad, looked slower and weaker. We now know that he was playing injured, so they shut him down and he will hopefully be 100% next season. To me it is obvious you try him out again next year as our #2 LD. We are stuck with the money, so it just makes way more sense to me to try and revitalize this dude's career. New management, new coaches and new leadership. I'd rather see what OEL can really do when pushed hard in a hockey market. If it doesn't work out and we still decide to buy him out, at least each year that goes by the buyout penalty isn't as bad.
  7. I actually thought Zadina would be worth too much for a trade like this. But honestly he is 23 now and will be 24 next season and is still struggling a lot. I think Boeser is the clearly better player here both at Zadina's age and currently. Main negative on Brock is his contract. I think I may pass on this for Van unless Detroit added something (nothing big but perhaps a 2nd or 3rd). It might be easier to just move Garland or Beau and stick with Boeser cause based on his end of season play, there may be some hope for him to bounce back into a solid top 6 winger.
  8. Yeah it looks like the offensive skills are there and could be a really valuable asset. I think there are NHL teams that could use his offense, but give him sheltered minutes in his own end. Unfortunately we already have Hughes who is showing he is great everywhere and after that guys like OEL, Hronek and maybe even Hirose are solid puck movers that could put up points. This team needs solid Dman at the moment, so Rathbone might be the odd man out in Van unless he has a big offseason and comes back decently improved in his own end.
  9. I'd be open to a trade like this. Garland I think makes sense for Van to move, but can still produce well and will do even better on a good team like Boston. Rathbone hasn't clicked yet (even though he should likely have gotten more games this year in Van), so maybe while he has a little value left time to move him. Lysell is a solid prospect and Reilly is actually supposedly pretty good, but just no space on the Bruins and they would likely want to clear the cap space.
  10. Draisaitl is the better offensive player/goal scorer I'd say and Petey is better in his own end. I'd say no, but mainly based on Petey being 3 years younger and us likely about to sign him to hopefully a long term deal for slightly cheaper then Drai will be re-upping for.
  11. Yeah I'm just not sure I agree that Miller would be the right choice. As mentioned above his lack of patience and temper flair ups are not what I think this team needs right now, especially with so many young players who will inevitably make mistakes as the team works to build something. His behavior and play when things went south earlier this season (and he admitted as much himself) is not leadership quality in my view. A leader needs to hold it together when times are tough and inspire the group. I don't think Miller has that quality to him. If you are looking for a good example of leadership on this team when things were bad, Luke Schenn would be a great example and someone I could see being a captain if the timing had worked out better. Again let me clarify I think Miller can be a solid leader on this team with the A. He brings intensity and an edge which I think is important to have. I just don't think he should be the main voice/leader for the group.
  12. I think the team should wait now on naming a C. Let start next season with Petey, Hughes, Miller wearing As. I think Petey or Hughes should get it eventually if they are interested (or perhaps a third option emerges with all the new players entering), but no need to rush or put that pressure on anyone right now. They need to establish consistent, winning hockey as the main priority. I like the direction the last while in terms of effort by the core buying into this new system. Miller (if he stays and isn't traded) should stick with having an A. I believe he will succeed as a leader on this team being an assistant captain and not having the main focus/voice be him.
  13. Really hoping Hoglander has a big playoffs for Abby. Lots of minutes and shows his skill. I want him to be challenging for a spot in Vancouver next season come training camp. Really think he could turn into an extremely versatile and skilled 2 way forward in the NHL.
  14. Don't know much about Sundqvist, his player card above doesn't look great but heard he was badly injured this season. Rodrigues is available and has had a couple really solid seasons in a row. Maybe a 3-4 contract would entice him and hopefully they can keep the cap hit decent. Definitely a position we need to fill, but I think we'll have some options to make that happen. We also have a slew of forwards and likely 1-2 need to be moved, so there are lots of ways this could happen.
  15. Yeah as I said in my post of course we want the cap hit as low as possible. But you are phrasing this as though I said give every guy on our team whatever they want. I'm specifically speaking about Elias Pettersson. There is no replacement for him. If he leaves the current team is a wash. We can't trade him for an equal player back, so if we do it should indicate a rebuild (which I'm fine with if they wanted to do that). So sure I'd love to sign him for 9 or 10 million. But if he wants 12, then you give him 12. EP and his agent aren't dumb, they are aware of the cap and know that taking more means less for other bodies on the roster. Also we should stop comparing ourselves to Toronto. Yeah I think it is funny they lose in the 1st round each year also, but they are one of the top teams each season and while I agree they have given too much money out at times they are in a far better position than Vancouver is. I'm looking forward to when our group are consistently in the playoffs and the next goal is to go deep. Seems like a far better problem to have then whatever Aqualini has been pulling off here.
  16. Yeah I'm not worried about that. All the top players make bank. His contract will match some of the other top players very likely. He'd be more useless to us if he left this tire fire organization and went somewhere else.
  17. He is an absolute stud and if our owner does not want to rebuild then this player is the most foundational part of the re-tool and go for it plan. Give him whatever he wants. Obviously us fans want the cap hit as low as possible, but 10 million, 11 million, 12 million, it doesn't matter. Sign him for 8 years and get it done. An elite 2 way, 100 point center just about to enter his prime. Potential future Selke candidate imo.
  18. Aman looked solid this year. If he has a big offseason maybe he can be our 3C in a shutdown role. If not I'm happy with him as 4C and see if he can keep developing. Raty I'm also excited about, but don't feel like some others here that he would be ready at all next year. The few games I've seen him play he's been pretty mid. I think he'll need more time to establish himself in the pros (which is okay).
  19. This seems unlikely to me, but maybe one day. Woo I would have liked to see get a couple games this season with Van, but not a big issue. Next season I think he'll mainly be in Abby again unless he has a monster training camp. Then throughout the season maybe he makes it up for a handful of games due to injuries.
  20. I think he just needs to figure out his fitness and improve his endurance out there. He has a natural nose for goal scoring and I think working on the above more regularly for him will be the factor that keeps him relevant in the NHL. His D doesn't even need to improve that much I'd say. Just be a little more reliable in retrieving the puck and moving it out in your own end. If he plays with Petey and Ilya next season they will do most of the Dzone work for that line.
  21. That is a lot, but I guess it's possible. Aman no chance we let walk away. I think he has been a pleasant surprise and is still young. Similarly with Kratsov. Still young and no harm in giving him another year to try and make it. I think they look for a trade for Meyers, up to 50% retained, but mainly try and move him without giving up assets. Likely target a team like Arizona who needs to reach the cap floor. And 1-2 forwards will be moved I think. A toss up between Garland, Boeser, Beau and Miller. Whatever the best deal is for Van will be the deciding factor. Miller I'm a little unsure on if they would want to move him or not anymore. Sounds like Pitts was willing to pay 2 first round picks and still might be in the offseason, but that leaves Van without a #2C and they are still looking for someone to take the #3C role. \ They will try to resign Bear to a short term/cheap contract I think. Dermotte is tougher with the injuries, but they may look to lowball him a 1 year deal if he is healthy.
  22. This boy is gonna cost money to resign! That's alright though! He's been so fun to watch and I love how solid his 2-way game is. Give him what he wants and lock him up long term this summer.
  23. What if his was dealing with an injury most of the season and the actual OEL is more like the guy we saw the first season he was here. Would you want to keep him then?
  24. Was at the game. Not a great one overall. Decent 1st period then 2 bad ones to follow. Main guys were pretty quiet all night. Petey was alright, but felt like he was lacking support out there. The game was lost due to the big players not showing up. Was happy for the rookies/new guys that got in. - Hirose looked alright, skates well and makes good decisions. Just needs more games to settle in. - Rathbone didn't look good unfortunately. Made quite a few poor breakout passes and in general not a ton of presence out there. However, he had 1 shift in the offensive zone that was great and he was all over the place making plays and we had a couple chances that shift. - McDonough still feels like the guy needs more ice time. I would have like for him to get a game in the top 6 even just for the experience.
