OMG Snow?

There is a lot of snow on the ground, and it is still snowing.  We were supposed to go to San Francisco today, but the flight was cancelled on earlier this week before it started snowing.  It doesn't look like we are going anywhere... The snow is packed outside, and thousands are without power.

Well this might not be good.  I'm flying home to Bellingham today from Arizona.

Good luck to you! You may want to check with the airline you are flying with.  If you are flying to SeaTac and then to Bellingham, there have been hundreds of flight cancellations and delays out of SeaTac.  If you're flying Alaska, they are offering a waiver.  I called them the other day to have a refund instead.  They even cancelled the flight I was supposed to be on from SFO to Seattle late this evening.

Special weather statement for Metro Vancouver:

Quote

Special weather statement in effect for:

  • City of Vancouver - including Burnaby and New Westminster
  • Metro Vancouver - northeast including Coquitlam and Maple Ridge
  • Metro Vancouver - southeast including Surrey and Langley
  • Metro Vancouver - southwest including Richmond and Delta
  • North Shore - including West Vancouver and North Vancouver

In the wake of the winter storm on Friday, a second relatively weaker storm is set to impact the BC south coast on Sunday.

With arctic air remains in place over the weekend, the arrival of this storm will potentially bring more snow to the BC south coast. For this event, the current computer guidance suggests that 5 to 10 cm of snow is possible for southern Vancouver Island and lesser amounts expected for the Lower Mainland. However, there remains some uncertainty with the storm track as the system develops offshore on Sunday. A slight deviation of the forecast track will greatly impact the amount of snowfall across southern BC. Please monitor subsequent forecasts for further updates on snowfall amounts.

With the ridge of high pressure over the BC interior weakening, outflow winds will begin to ease tonight. As a result, wind warnings are not expected for coastal regions with this event.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to BCstorm@canada.ca or tweet reports using #BCStorm.

Snowfall warning for Metro Vancouver:

Snowfall warning in effect for:

  • City of Vancouver - including Burnaby and New Westminster
  • Metro Vancouver - northeast including Coquitlam and Maple Ridge
  • Metro Vancouver - southeast including Surrey and Langley
  • Metro Vancouver - southwest including Richmond and Delta
  • North Shore - including West Vancouver and North Vancouver

Snowfall with total amounts of 5 to 10 cm is expected.

A low pressure centre is rapidly deepening over Vancouver Island this afternoon.

Snow has intensified ahead of the low and amounts of 5 to 10 cm are expected in Metro Vancouver and southeastern sections of the Sunshine Coast through this evening.

Over Greater Victoria, the Southern Gulf Islands, and Eastern and Inland Vancouver Island 5 to 10 cm are expected through this evening.

The heaviest snow for East Vancouver Island is expected on the Malahat Highway while the heaviest snow for Inland Vancouver Island is expected in the Lake Cowichan area where 10 to 15 cm of snow will fall through Monday morning.

Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions. Rapidly accumulating snow will make travel difficult. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to BCstorm@canada.ca or tweet reports using #BCStorm.

Fine snow falling in Burnaby for the last hour. If it warms up a degree or two, I can see a whole lot falling tonight. Luckily the salt trucks have made passes during the past week with the cold weather, so the street near me seems clear.
