Hopefully the Whitecaps have recovered from their Canadian Championship victory because they have a major game tonight.

They're playing away at Nashville.  Nashville is one of the teams the Caps are chasing for a playoff spot.  Both have played 22 games, Nashville has 31 points and Vancouver has 26.  Caps win and they're just two away.  Caps lose and they're eight away.   One of those six pointer MLS games.

Game starts at 5:00 on TSN5.

Covid strikes the squad.

I admire Sartini's optimism.  But White was already out due to a rib injury.  And if Cubas and Dajome are out due to covid along with who knows how many others.....damn!

VANCOUVER — The Vancouver Whitecaps’ road to the playoffs continues to be a bumpy ride.

A COVID-19 outbreak has left the ‘Caps (7-10-6) short-handed for Friday’s crucial home matchup against the Houston Dynamo (7-12-4).

The club has not confirmed which players have entered Major League Soccer’s health and safety protocols, but at least six regulars were missing from training on Thursday, including forward Cristian Dajome and midfielder Andres Cubas.

Despite the shortened bench, head coach Vanni Sartini said he was confident heading into Friday’s game.

“We’ve always been very good when we’re under pressure,” he said. “And we’ve always been responding really well, the guys literally gathering together and getting together towards the new objective.

“This is a little bump that we’re going to miss some players (on Friday) but the players that will play, they’ve already played with the team, they’ve already won games with the team, they’ve already played in their position. So it’s nothing crazy, it’s nothing major.”

Ryan Gauld 2  Colorado 1

Whitecaps escape with the win and get the needed three points which temporarily puts them above the playoff bar.

Next up: away to RSL on Saturday.

"Escape" is the word.....they were horrific defensively in the last half hour of the match. Very lucky not to give up the equalizer....

Once again, Ryan Gauld shows his value....

If you were watching the game, it was obvious that RG was gassed as the match was winding down....but Vanni just doesn't have anyone who provides the same quality of service on a consistent basis, so he left him out there....

...and there he was, playing in the perfect ball into Gressel for the late equalizer....

Seems like Deja Vu. Whitecaps struggle until mid-late season, get a bunch of new players and then go on a tear. Hopefully history repeats.

Cubas our new midfielder is by far the biggest difference maker on the team, though Gauld scores and sets up goals Cubas defensively and offensively is unmatched. He’s effective with and without the ball. His work rate and determination is world class already. He’s going to be such an integral piece for a very, very long time. We are so incredibly lucky to have him.
