Top seed in each division (Central/Pacific) plays one of the wildcard teams (1v8, 2v7)

That leaves the 2nd and 3rd team from each division to play each other in the first round (2v3, 2v3)

So real world scenario right now would see:

Nashville (Central 1) vs San Jose (Wildcard 2)

Anaheim (Pacific 1) vs Winnipeg (Wildcard 1)

St Louis (Central 2) vs Chicago (Central 3)

Vancouver (Pacific 2) vs Calgary (Pacific 3)

how is LA in a playoff spot having lost more games than Winnipeg?

They have more Regulation & Overtime Wins. That's the first tiebreaker if they have played the same amount of games.

From NHL.com...

If two or more clubs are tied in points during the regular season, the standing of the clubs is determined in the following order:

  • The fewer number of games played (i.e., superior points percentage).
  • The greater number of games won, excluding games won in the Shootout. This figure is reflected in the ROW column.
  • The greater number of points earned in games between the tied clubs. If two clubs are tied, and have not played an equal number of home games against each other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the extra game shall not be included. If more than two clubs are tied, the higher percentage of available points earned in games among those clubs, and not including any "odd" games, shall be used to determine the standing.
  • The greater differential between goals for and against for the entire regular season. NOTE: In standings a victory in a shootout counts as one goal for, while a shootout loss counts as one goal against.

How do the second round matchups work? If anyone can throw out an example with an upset or two in the first round that would be great.

Divisional final sort of thing. Say the playoff matches in R1 are:

Ana vs. Wpg

Van vs. Cgy

Stl vs. Min

Nsh vs. Chi

The winner of Anaheim/Winnipeg plays Vancouver/Calgary and St. Louis/Minny plays Nashville/Chicago

Question regarding the plus minus on the penalty shot. In the NHL video games, if the penalty shot is taken on the PP, then it doesn't count. If its taken SHG or even strength, it counts for the player. I guess its the same in real life

Seems like it. There was a successful EV-penalty shot in the Wild vs Chicago game on Dec 16, 2014. The player who scored on the EV-penalty did get a +/- but not the players who were on the ice when the penalty got awarded. Could the league ever rescind a win from a team as punishment, or even just in general?

I don't think so. I believe that once the game is over, it is considered official and cannot be changed. However, if a team refuses to play for some reason (such as a form of protest or bankruptcy), the game can be forfeit.
