Rate The Last Movie You Saw - 2

Only the Brave, 8/10.

Maybe influenced cuz some of my family knew one of the Hotshots, but thought it was a well done movie.  Was interesting seeing Josh Brolin as a real person for a change, after watching a few Avenger movies.

But, back to the movie, anyone who doesn't get choked up near the end is inhuman.  Just insane what those families would have gone through, just waiting...

It was such a great idea, but almost too big of an idea that allowed for so many different directions to go in. Instead of picking one and flushing it out, there were likely 13 different flashes of ideas. Kind of disappointing but still worth the watch.

”Oof. That was not good.”

This movie could have gone many different ways. It chose the most bland way possible to go. Did not stick the landing.

So ever since I watched it, I’ve been thinking about Danny Boyle’s films lately, and just realized how bad he’s been. For some reason, perhaps a good reason, I put him in that category of those great directors that came around in the 90s and 2000s (ie: Tarantino, Nolan, Fincher, Anderson). One of those guys that just consistently put out stuff nobody else was doing.

However, I finally realized or just paid attention to how bad his stuff has been for quite some time. Don’t get me wrong, Trainspotting is great, as is 28 Days Later. Sunshine is very underrated. I remember liking Slumdog Millionaire quite a bit, but I’ve heard it’s dated, now.

However, he’s been on a run lately from terribly average to downright awful.

127 Hours - 5/10

I’m not even sure it’s a 5. The story itself is interesting, and certainly one that lends itself to a movie, mostly because Hollywood will make a movie about anything. This would have made a better documentary, but it’s watchable, just not more than once.

For a Danny Boyle film, compared to his other movies that seemed uniquely “Boyle”, it absolutely seems like a movie any director could have pulled off. Which is where Boyle seems to have gone with his career lately. This appears to be the case with all his movies following 127 Hours.

Trance - 0/10

This is downright awful.

Steve Jobs - 6/10

I mean, it was ok, but I haven’t seen it in four years. I remember thinking it was pure Oscar Bait. Painfully average. Good acting from some. I remember thinking at the time, “This doesn’t seem like a Danny Boyle movie, it seems like a David Fincher film. But he clearly passed on it, so no we get this generic POS.” Boyle seemed out of his element.

 Just looked up on Wiki, and apparently Fincher was attached to direct, originally. Man, did we get a subpar version of the movie of what could have been.

Trainspotting 2 - 3/10

I’m not even sure what makes this movie a 3. It’s bland, uninspired, and forgettable. Pure cash crab.

Yesterday - 1/10

As was first said by DbtR and echoed by me, this movie had a lot of different ideas going on at once, and the story itself could have gone so many different ways. Unfortunately, it really did go in the least risky way possible.

The performances were awful. Lily James did a far better performance in Baby Driver. Baby Driver! A car driving movie where she played the 3rd or 4th supporting role as a love interest waitress. Look, I love Baby Driver and Edgar Wright. But that’s like saying Olivia Coleman was better in Hot Fuzz than she was in The Favourite. This movie was made for Oscar season, and all the performances were awful. The worst one being a tie between Ed Sheeran and Kate McKinnon. Sheeran I can understand, because he’s not an actor. He’s literally playing himself in the film. But why even have that role to begin with?

But McKinnon? What a garbage actress. I don’t think I’ve seen a performance of hers (outside of SNL) where she’s actually good. Most she trying to chew the scenery, but she’s making the worst choices for her character, if the character is even good to begin with. Here, she’s just cringe.

Long story short, Boyle’s movies are just not watchable anymore. Which was shocking when you think about where he started from.

never was a big Boyle fan, but I think Trainspotting is legit 10/10 brilliance - lightning in a bottle type movie. and STILL I haven't been able to watch part 2

but after reading that, I now realize I don't think I've even seen much he's done. I did like Steve Jobs when I saw it, but I don't feel the need (or interest) to watch it ever again.

don't remember anything about Slumdog, and I never bothered with stuff like 127 hours or Yesterday. Don't remember hearing of Trance at all. I remember reading Alex Garland's book The Beach and thinking it was brilliant when I was a kid, and I watched the movie like 100 times in 2000, but it isn't good.

might give Yesterday a shot though, as the premise is kinda funny

It’s terrible. Seems like a movie that today, would be straight to Netflix with no warning. It’s awful.

I think I watched it twice. Yeah, not good either.

But John Lennon shows up. And what about Coke? And cigarettes? And at least we now know that Kate Mackinnon won't be right for any role. Ever.

I didn't think Lily James was as bad as you thought, but I'm a sucker for her.

The John Lennon part was such a dumb scene. I don’t mind when popcorn films, or stupid comedies have scenes that don’t add to the story or character development at all. But this movie has so many scenes that added nothing. The John Lennon part was a prime example. “Hey, remember John Lennon? Here he is!”

I didn’t think Lily James was actually that bad. She was easily the best role in the film. The rest, whether the actors themselves or poorly written, were so bad.

His roadie friend? WTF was he there for? The main character literally hated the guy until the script said he had to be there for the rest of the film. And when he was MCing the “best singer-off” between the main character and Ed Sheeran (yes, that’s a scene that takes up time)? Out of all the people who realistically would MC that, why would a dumbsh*t roadie be the guy Ed Sheeran would even allow? The guy wouldn’t even be allowed near him!

Here we go!

Remember that one time Adam Sandler put in a good performance in a phenomenal movie? Yeah, it was Punch Drunk Love, and all thanks to Paul Thomas Anderson. Well, from the Safdie Brothers, who wrote and directed my favourite film from 2017, Good Time starring Robert Pattinson, comes their new movie this December, Uncut Gems, starring Adam Sandler. Can’t. Frickin. Wait.

Scorsese's new movie, The Irishman (which premiers in two days at the New York Film Festival) is THREE AND A HALF HOURS

THREE AND A HALF HOURS

and it's reportedly SLOW. The producer (THE PRODUCER) is selling the movie with:

Quote

“I’m excited for the world to get to see it. What will surprise you is, as a Scorsese movie, it is a slower movie,” Rosenthal said. “It doesn’t have the kind of intensity, the visual intensity, as a ‘Casino,’ as a ‘Goodfellas.’ It is guys looking at themselves through an older perspective.”

Now don't get me wrong, I like some slow Scorsese (I really liked Silence, even).

But I'm not sure about this. Gimmicky anti-aging CGI, a plot based entirely on "true story" that's widely considered not even remotely close to being true, three and a half hours, basically straight to Netflix. It just feels like a bad idea from top to bottom

I'll give anything a shot that gets Pesci back in acting. *crosses fingers*
