No. Who the hell's gonna play defense then? if we trade a top-four defenseman, we need one coming back from somewhere.

Say we trade Edler, our long-term defense is:

Hamhuis - Bieksa

Garrison - Tanev

Ballard - Alberts/Barker

That;s ugly. Not going to win anything. Tanev isn't a true top-four player yet, and if we have even ONE injury its disaster.

Absolutely I would. Defense is easier to play by committee than offense. Look at the Blue Jackets' group of defensemen. They're nothing special, yet they're playing really well as a group and keeping the goals against down, with the help of Bobrovsky in net of course. It also helps that the Canucks have a number of promising defense prospects that they can start to groom to fill roles on the blueline in the near future.

On the other hand, the Canucks' most consistent problem over the last few years is not being able to score in crucial moments, even with a fully healthy group. This indicates that they could use another top 6 forward. The Canucks don't have much outside of Jensen and Gaunce to speak of in terms of scoring forward prospects either.

No question I'd trade a top 4 defenseman for a top 6 forward.

bieksa is well rounded player awhile is having an off season and he just came back from an injury twice. He can hit, fight, and score plus he's a faster skater then edler and comes handy in clutch moments. He deserves more then what people give him just look back to when bieksa and hamhuis used to be the top D line for us and how often we would play them.

Doesn't change the fact he is still very valuable in trade. He has gotten better and is returning to form, he is still a 50 point defenseman who plays in all situations and has #1 upside.

That is really valuable. Look what Erik Johnson and Brent Burns returned. And I would say Edler is better than both.

Then you add into the fact he has an absolutely phenomenal contract, and his value only goes up.

He could return alot, but at the same token he holds a NTC and is a key component of our club and our future. I wouldn't move him.
