no call up is going to get big minutes under willie, i agree its best to keep him in utica and let him play more meaningful minutes unless there is a chance he gets top 9 here and 12 min or more with the big club. But I dont see that happening this year without Virtanen going to junior and multiple players being moved with no forwards coming back.

Seems like Kenins, grenier,Vey and gaunce are probably ahead of him, for reasons like positional needs or ability to be more useful play on a 4th line with less minutes in a grinding defensive role

Everything looks different in a month, be it guys being moved, injuries or guys returning. I personally would have taken Shink over Kenins, but Kenins landed himself a one-way making his salary tough to swallow at the AHL level. The Grenier call up was for 24 hours, but no one is scoffing at the NHL paycheck. I'd rather Shink get a real call, and even then he's probably competing for Gaunce for that call up.

With Virtanen returning I'm guessing they won't need to call someone up with Hansen potentially injured?

If Lecavalier can get traded 50% retained for a cap hit of 2.3m I am sure higgins can get moved, granted Vinny is retiring apparently this off season and higgins has a year after.

We could retain money on higgins too. I think Higgins replacement would be Gaunce or kenins in a permanent role. Shink would likely replace Vrbata once he is and should be moved.

The problem with retaining cap on higgins is a team can only retain salary on 3 contracts.  We already have Luongo, and I'm hoping we retain on both Hammer and Vbrata to increase their value at TD (higher picks).  In the off season after their contracts are off the books we could look to moving higgins with retain cap.  Hopefully Higgins and Burrows

its possible to retain on both of the players you mention. But some teams have cap space to take on full salary. Nashville is a team to come to mind, would they look at Vrbata now that they acquired Johansen?

Florida, Islanders, Devils also have cap space. Washington has decent amount as well

We can still take back a lesser "bad" contract closer to $1m and waive it saving most of the cap hit and adding depth in Utica. Some journeyman depth C's and D's sure wouldn't hurt.

Hunter Shinkaruk Named AHL All-Star:

Quote

The American Hockey League announced today that Hunter Shinkaruk has been named to the Western Conference All-Star Classic Roster. The 2016 Toyota AHL All-Star Classic, will take place January 31 and February 1 in Syracuse, N.Y.

Shinkaruk, 21, in just his second season as a professional, leads the Utica Comets in goals (13), power-play goals (7), and points (25) in 27 games played. His 12 assists are the second-most on the team.

Each of the AHL’s four divisions will be represented by 13 players: seven forwards, four defensemen and two goaltenders. Rosters were determined by committees of AHL coaches, and all 30 AHL teams are represented by at least one All-Star. The 24th overall pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Level Draft made his National Hockey League debut for the Canucks against the Montreal Canadiens on Nov. 16. In 2014-15, his first professional season, Shinkaruk recorded 31 points (16-15-31) and 28 penalty minutes over 74 games played. The Calgary, Alberta native also scored six points (4-2-6) in 23 postseason games with Utica through the 2015 Calder Cup Finals.

The 2016 Toyota AHL All-Star Skills Competition on Jan. 31 (8 p.m. ET) will keep its traditional format, with All-Stars from the Eastern Conference squaring off against All-Stars from the Western Conference in seven skills events.

The 2016 Toyota AHL All-Star Challenge will take place on the evening of Feb. 1 (7 p.m. ET); instead of a traditional 60-minute game, the AHL’s All-Stars will be divided into four teams, one representing each of the league’s divisions (Atlantic, North, Central, Pacific). The teams will then play a round-robin tournament featuring six games of nine minutes each; the first half of each game will be played at 4-on-4, and the second half at 3-on-3. The two teams with the best records at the end of the round-robin tournament will face off for the championship, a six-minute game played at 3-on-3.

The 2016 rosters feature 37 first-time AHL All-Stars, nine rookies and 10 former first-round draft choices, including standouts William Nylander of the Toronto Marlies, Michael McCarron of the St. John’s IceCaps, Nick Ritchie of the San Diego Gulls and Mikko Rantanen of the San Antonio Rampage. In addition, 23 of the All-Stars named have appeared in the National Hockey League already this season.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins associate coach Jay Leach, Toronto Marlies head coach Sheldon Keefe, Milwaukee Admirals head coach Dean Evason and Ontario Reign head coach Mike Stothers will serve as coaches for the event.

Tickets for the two-day 2016 Toyota AHL All-Star Classic are on sale now. Ticket prices range from $40-60 and can be purchased either in person at the Syracuse Crunch office located in the War Memorial Arena at 800 South State Street in Syracuse, by calling (315) 473-4444 or through all Ticketmaster outlets.

The 2016 Toyota AHL All-Star Classic in Syracuse will feature the top young talent in the American Hockey League: Of the 679 players to take part in the AHL All-Star Classic since 1995, more than 93 percent have competed in the National Hockey League, including Patrice Bergeron, Ben Bishop, Troy Brouwer, Ryan Callahan, Zdeno Chara, Logan Couture, Jiri Hudler, Tyler Johnson, Chris Kunitz, Ryan Miller, Gustav Nyquist, Zach Parise, Tuukka Rask, Pekka Rinne, Bobby Ryan, Cory Schneider, Patrick Sharp, Jason Spezza, Eric Staal, P.K. Subban and Mats Zuccarello.

In operation since 1936 and celebrating its 80th-anniversary season in 2015-16, the AHL continues to serve as the top development league for all 30 National Hockey League teams. More than 88 percent of today’s NHL players are American Hockey League graduates, and for the 14th year in a row, more than 6 million fans attended AHL games across North America in 2014-15.

Teams that aren't at the cap often are that way deliberately due to an internal cap. They can't afford to spend more. Nashville is one of those teams. The Panthers, Islanders and Devils are also teams with internal caps and Washington may have some limitations as well.

Those teams might be able to stomach a rental on a deadline deal, but don't look for them to max out their cap unless they're getting a player who's salary is lower than their cap hit at the end of the contract.

I am confused as to why is Nylander playing both in the AHL and WJC this year.  I thought AHL is 20+ and WJC is under 20.  Aye whatever, not worth the google check.

Good on Shinkaruk, if anything this helps his trade valueB)

William is only 19, however since he is drafted out of the SHL. they have no agreement with the AHL to say either SHL/NHL.Only the CHL has that agreement. Same thing with Boeser if we signed him. Could play in the AHL for this year/next.

Oh i totally get what your saying, that said Florida if still in a playoff spot would probably have interest in Vrbata and would take on his salary for the remainder of the season.

Other teams closer to the cap, may want retention, and I would be willing to do so if the return was worth it. Montreal would be the obvious team needing retention to take him on, but it was a team he almost signed with before here apparently. Mtl may opt for a cheaper player in say versteeg tho, would cost less also

for vrbata it's not likely to matter as the teams only take on the remainder of his contract, which is only a cpl of months worth, so less than a mill.

What skills competition will he be in? Im thinking puck control or maybe fastest skater..?

Probably puck control. While his out right speed is decent it's not elite by any means. His skating excels more in the department of being nimble/shifty.
