One year in Utica is all I see Cole needing after that

Hank

Bo

McCann

Cole

Bones is gone in 2 years

Oh yeah, if a guy is a 20 goal scorer in his 2nd full season, then plays the premier shut down role for a team in his next season, we should probably just drop that guy like a rock.

What the hell are you smoking?

I agree that we should absolutely keep Bonino, if financially feasible. But he does go UFA in 2017, so he could easily be gone in two years (for cap reasons). However, our centre depth and prospects should not be seen as a reason to move away from Bones. Even if he's "replaced" in his current spot in the lineup, he could easily shift to LW, and be highly effective there as protection (in terms of positioning, defense, faceoffs, etc) and an on-ice mentor for one of our young centre prospects.

McCann and Cassels both wont be centers on the Canucks in 2 years. In the AHL yes... McCann I could see making the team in the next 2 seasons but I think Cassels will spend a few seasons seasoning in the A. I hope Green isnt plucked to coach in the NHL next season. Id love for him to get a season or 2 with Cole and mould him into a Dave Bolland type third line center.

I see Bones still here

I think the great thing about having prospect depth is that they can be packaged into trades for upgrades on the big club. The first example that comes to mind was when Trader Jim was looking to move up to #1 in this years draft when rumours were swirling that they were thinking of including players such as Shinkaruk in the deal.

Perhaps the Canucks could do something similar by packaging Bonino in such a way to upgrade @ 2C, or even keeping him on the team and moving him to a solid checking 3C role while getting another skilled offensive centre on the second line. I'm not sure if they would look to trade Bonino as it appears that Jim and Trevor actively seeked him out in the Kesler trade, but I don't see them particularly over-attached to him either. He also brings the added skill of being good in shootouts, which I think is under-rated.

Even if such a trade route isn't explored having young depth just provides that internal competition and insurance that at least a couple of these young guys will make an impact for the Canucks on the NHL level.

As for my personal opinion I would like to see Cassels remain on the Canucks just because of the family connection he has to the organization and because he would likely play his heart out here.

We need a 1-2 dman PP specialist more then anything. Look how well Weber is doing. He is a pretty solid dman but not a top PP guy. Imagine if we had a top PP qb we would be scary.

Is Cassels good at FOs?

He is. A lot of our center prospects are good at faceoffs.

Cassels

Gaunce

McCann

Pettit

Horvat (if you still count him)

Here is a quote from a write-up of the OHL coaches poll: (at http://www.ontariohockeyleague.com/article/2014-15-ohl-coaches-poll-winners)

"In the Eastern Conference, the first place Oshawa Generals lead the way with representation in 13 of the 20 different categories highlighted by New York Islanders prospect Michael Dal Colle who was named Most Dangerous in the Goal Area and Best Shot, while Vancouver Canucks prospect Cole Cassels finished second in voting in five different categories including Smartest Player, Hardest Worker, Best Playmaker, Best on Face-Offs, and Best Defensive Forward."

Obviously Cassels had a great season. In addition to ramping up his scoring in a big way, as we can see he came second in the voting for best in face-offs and best defensive forward. Combined with his offensive skills (averaging 1.5 PPG) he was probably the best two-way forward in the Eastern Conference and one of the best in the entire CHL. He always plays with toughness and intensity and is not small. (At 6 feet tall and 180 as an 18 year old he will probably be about 6-1 and maybe 195 as his full NHL playing size making him about average for an NHL foward.)

He has made much more progress than normal since being drafted and is regarded as an excellent propsect. Only about half of all 3rd round picks ever play a single game in the NHL and only about 20% become NHL regulars in the sense of playing 100 or more career games.

But guys who score 1.5 PPG in the OHL as 19-year-olds normally do make the NHL, even without Cassels' defensive ability. Right now I would say that he projects as a good NHL 3C, although obviously there is uncertainty.

Many people (including me) have been very critical of Gillis's draft record, but his last draft, with Horvat, Shinkaruk, Cassels, Subban, and Cederholm will probably be as good as the previous 3 or 4 years combined and one of the best two or three since the year the Sedins were drafted. Last year's draft should also be one of the best.
