Jays have a club option for next year at 8 million. They'll probably exercise it and give Tellez another year of development. Smoak is UFA in 2020 and by that time, he'll probably be gone.

The Blue Jays announced the moves Wednesday evening on Twitter. Smoak had a breakout season in 2017, batting .270 with 38 home runs and 90 runs batted in. RUPERTKBD
Solarte is an interesting story. He looked like a fantastic pick up in the first half of the season, but he faded badly in the 2nd half and his defense was mediocre at best. I'm thinking that the Jays might just play Russell Martin at third more often and let Jansen have the catching job. RM could be the third stringer, if someone goes on the DL. If you're already dealing with sub-par defense at third, you might as well get something for the 20 million that Martin is going to make next year. ChuckNORRIS4Cup
Blue Jays fire hitting coach Jacoby, first base coach Leiper An off-season of change continues for the Toronto Blue Jays. The team’s hitting coach Brook Jacoby has been fired, Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith has confirmed. The 58-year-old, whose name was removed from the team’s website prior to an official announcement being made, had served as Toronto’s hitting coach since November 2014. Sportsnet can also confirm the team has parted ways with first base coach Tim Leiper, who has held that position with the Blue Jays since 2014 and with the organization since 2013. The moves comes one week following the Blue Jays hiring Charlie Montoyo as the team’s new manager. https://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/blue-jays-fire-hitting-coach-brook-jacoby/ Always like Tim Leiper at 1st base thought he was good at his job too bad, but with a new manager these things happen now. I think he'll be in the bigs sooner, rather than leter, but I also believe that management will be careful with him.

Gurn
https://www.msn.com/en-ca/sports/mlb/jays-trade-diaz-to-astros-for-thornton/ar-BBPO9RK?ocid=spartandhp " The Toronto Blue Jays traded utility infielder Aledmys Diaz to the Houston Astros on Saturday for starting pitcher Trent Thornton. The trade helps address the Blue Jays' depth issues in the starting rotation and in the infield. Toronto's pitching staff had the fourth-worst earned-run average in Major League Baseball last season at 4.85. A large part of the rotation's struggles were the ongoing injury issues with Nos. 1 and 2 starters Marcus Stroman and Aaron Sanchez. Stroman had a 4-9 record with a 5.54 ERA over 102.1 innings pitched before getting shut down for the season with ongoing blister issues. Sanchez had a 4-6 record with a 4.89 ERA over 105 innings. He had surgery on his right index finger on Sept. 25 after missing most of the season with blister and fingernail issues on his throwing hand. Thornton could compete for a spot in the starting rotation or join the bullpen. The 25-year-old right-hander posted a 9-8 record with a 4.42 ERA in 24 games for the triple-A Fresno Grizzlies in 2018. Thornton, from Pittsburgh, owns a career record of 32-19 and a 4.23 ERA over four Minor League seasons with 395 strikeouts and 78 starts in 88 appearances. At the same time, the return of veteran shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, who missed the entire 2018 season after surgery to remove bone spurs in his right ankle, has created a log jam in the infield." " Devon Travis is the incumbent at second base, Tulowitzki has made it clear he expects to start at short, and Brandon Drury is at the top of the Blue Jays' depth chart at third base. However, Lourdes Gurriel Jr., had a breakout year in Tulowitzki's absence, while Yangervis Solarte and Richard Urena split time at third last season. On top of that, highly touted prospect Vladimir Guerrero Jr., could finally step into the starting third baseman's role this spring. All that adds up to the 28-year-old Diaz being the odd man out. He hit .263 with 26 doubles, 18 home runs, with 55 runs batted in over 130 games in 2018. The six-foot-one, 195-pound native of Santa Clara, Cuba, has a career batting average of .275 with 42 home runs, 140 RBIs with the St. Louis Cardinals and Toronto." Wilbur
It'll be interesting to see what Thornton has. I'm not super worried about the higher ERA as I think his AAA division is the high scoring one. Diaz played well for the Jays last year but I think Gurriel will be even better. Mackcanuck
BC's James Paxton traded to Yankees The New York Yankees have struck the first major trade of baseball’s offseason, acquiring Seattle Mariners ace lefty James Paxton in a deal that will solidify the front of their rotation while sending three-prospects to the rebuilding Mariners. The Yankees are sending three prospects to Seattle in return, including left-handed pitcher Justus Sheffield, who is New York’s No. 1 prospect, according to MLB.com. Right-handed pitcher Erik Swanson and outfielder Dom Thompson-Williams are also going to Seattle. https://sports.yahoo.com/yankees-acquire-star-pitcher-james-paxton-trade-mariners-224543574.html

Interesting nice find, read a nice story on him, he actually topped 101 this year, will be interesting for the rule 5 especially after the other pitcher they just acquired in the Diaz trade also has that as well.
