[Proposal] PHI-TBL-VAN Three Way

Recommended Posts

PHI: Baertschi and the TBL 1st (28th overall pick)

TBL: Burrows and the VAN 3rd (63rd overall pick)

VAN: Callahan and Sanheim

Philadelphia gives up Sanheim, a highly touted defensive prospect but likely to be third on their defensive depth chart because of Ghostisbehere and Provorov, and receives Baertschi, who can play on their second line and grow alongside the Flyers young forward group of Couturier and Schenn. They also get the 28th overall pick, and can make selections at 18 and 28. Despite giving up Sanheim, Philadelphia still has mammoth defenseman Morin and the two-way Swedish defenseman Hagg.

Tampa Bay clears up some cap space for this year and gets significant cap relief once Burrows' contract is up. This will allow them to retain their young group of players, as Killorn and Kucherov are RFAs this summer and Drouin, Johnson, and Palat RFAs next summer. The Lightning downgrade their pick in doing so, however, going from the 28th choice to the 63rd choice.

Vancouver takes a risk by trading for Callahan. A year removed from a 54 point campaign, he is signed for 4 more years at $5.8M, which will take him to age 35. With today's news about his hip surgery, he will not be ready by the start of the season, and will likely join the team in December or January. The real take away for Vancouver in this deal is defenseman Travis Sanheim. Sanheim has the potential to be a #1 defenseman. For a 20 year old eligible for his rookie AHL campaign this coming season, he has great size at 6'4" and 200 lbs. During his draft year he was considered a smooth skating shutdown defenseman with the ability to move the puck. His next two years saw him develop his offensive game. He is now considered to be a two-way defenseman, but don't let that fool you. In his draft+1 year he had 65 points in 67 games (15+50), and this past draft+2 year he had 68 points in 52 games (15+53), including 3 points in 4 AHL regular season games (1+3). In both draft+1 and draft+2 years, he's played very well under pressure, collecting 24 points in 22 WHL Playoff games (6+18). Sanheim will likely spend 2016-2017 in the AHL developing under coach Green, and then potentially make the jump the year after to be further developed under coach Lidster.

Let's break this up.

Philly gives up Sanheim and gets Beartchi and the 28 overall.

Tampa bay gives up their 28 overall pick and Callahan but receives Alex Burrows and Vancouvers 63 overall.

Vancouver gives up Beartchi, burrows, and the 63 overall pick but receives Sanheim and Callahan.

Im not so sure about the value between philly and Vancouver but could be tweaked

Overvalued our assets and given us exactly what we want.....remind me,  when exactly has that ever worked out for us in the recent past?

I don't think I've severely overvalued Baertschi. He's had an up and down season, but in the latter half of 2015.16 he came on and became more of a complete player (although still not totally complete yet). If you look at the first 33 games of this past season, he was healthy scratched 6 times and in the 27 games that he did play he only scored 7 points.

His play changed halfway through the year, where he started to go to the dirty areas and play with more effort on the forecheck, along with better defensive positioning. He isn't a Selke guy -- i'm not saying that -- but he made great strides to play better all around. And as he did this, in the final 42 games of the year he scored 21 points (13+8). He is definitely a Top-9 player with his improved defensive game, and next year if he stays consistent could be a 40-50 point 2nd line LW.

TBL gets absolutely wrecked in this trade.

They save a ton of cap space long-term once Burrows contract is up. It isn't a homerun for them, but they get rid of the liability and financial commitment in Callahan by moving back in the draft.

A TBL fan on HFBoards (yea, I know lol) proposed the 63rd for Callahan and 28th, but said they would be open to taking a cap dump as long as it is for 1 year, as anything more would take cap away from Drouin, Johnson, and Palat.

Mind you, it isn't a homerun for us also. We get what we need but at the price of a long-term contract for a player who is likely on the decline. Tampa gets what they want (cap space), and Philly too (more offense up front on the left side by using their excess defensive riches). Everyone gives up valuable pieces but gets value in return.

Our left wing doesn't have much depth after Daniel and we're likely going to sign a right wing like Eriksson or Brouwer in FA. So keeping Baertschi would be the best idea.

In terms of LW depth, there are options out in free agency that will fill the hole left by Baertschi. We have the cap space. Lucic being the big name, Ladd being the next. Eriksson can play both wings. If anything, forwards can make contributions to an NHL team earlier than defensemen. Heck, look at Horvat making big contributions at age 21 (draft+3 year). We could draft a LW this year or next and have him possibly impact the team relatively quickly and still be in the same age group as the rest of the young core.

We also have middle 6 left wingers in Etem, Granlund, and Gaunce. Rodin is a question mark but IIRC can play both left and right wings too.

In fact you don't have cap space - this year yes, but not the year after with the contracts of Markstrom, Gudbranson, Hutton, Horvat being up.  The only contract that would come off the books is Miller and you need a backup to replace him.  Instead of Burrows and his 4.5M being gone you added Callahan and his 5.8M.

btw Callahan is out 5 month and has an NMC.
