Forward Development

Simple  question

Who was the last forward  prospect drafted by the Canucks -  developed by the canucks - and  now contributing as a forward on our team in the prime of his career ?

Who and what year was this forward  drafted ?

Just curious who you pick ?  Do you see this as a problem with our club ?

Horvat.

The last player drafted and developed (meaning ahl like LaBamba said) on the current team would be Gaunce.

Is this a problem? Yes, considering the process the team is going through (getting younger). The problem is we finished so high for so long, along with abysmal drafting and asset management in the past 10 years that we don't have a stockpile of young players coming up. Jim is building that part of the organization now. It's not a pretty process, it's going to take time. Anyone who thinks this should be a quick fix is in for a rude wakeup call.

Wait a second.....was Gillis not good at drafting and development?  Actually, if you assume that going straight to the bigs makes you a better player, then he may have been pretty good: Tanev, Horvat, Hutton, Rodin, and there's Virtanen.  But of course, the arbitrary constraint that they must have played in the American league makes almost too much sense.  We also have Gaunce (but we'll ignore that for purposes of crying).  And Vey is a Utica graduate.

So is it just occurring to you that our minor system has been broken for a decade?  Way to keep up.  Now you've got an open field to whine without perspective.

Stop listening to Tony Gallagher. The guys a troll.

The reason we haven't developed many NHL forwards recently is because we haven't had any and the few we had largely got traded away or are already playing in the NHL (Horvat, Virtanen...though Virt should be in  Utica IMO).

This isn't a case of 'Oh Noeesss!!! We don't know how to develop!!' :frantic:It's a case of, we haven't had much to develop. That's certainly it's own problem but it is getting better and has already been beaten to death. AKA, doesn't need another thread.

Edler because he isn't a forward....

Hansen was drafted in 2004.  So  12 years ago ......

So...12 years ago....doesn't count for whatever reason.  So your point is....let me guess.  Is it that the team you wish you knew how to cheer for is actually a steaming pile of Surrey?  Is that where you're going with this?  Clever guy.  Hansen doesn't count.  Sure.

Kesler.  Doesn't count.

Brendan Gaunce would be the last player drafted and developed through the AHL to be contributing on the roster. Then Anton Rodin, but he had a few years in the SHL and is still an unknown for NHL production. But after that, the next player to have been drafted and developed by the Canucks to produce in his prime would be Jannik Hansen, then the Sedins.

Gaunce (2012)

Rodin (2009)

Hansen (2004)

Sedins (1999)

Wowwwww look at that... that's pretty much a decade of bad drafting between the Sedins and Rodin, where at the moment on our team we just have Hansen (and Sutter) to show for it.

This is a legitimate concern.

If we are talking about full cycle development, draft, full Jr time, then through the AHL and up the lineup it's Gaunce then Hansen.

Don't expect this to change too much. We trade away picks that are in that Comet sweet spot in the late 1st - 3rd rounds. Even if we hold onto our picks this year we will likely have a forward hole made to cover holes right now. We iced our worst offence in a decade and drafted William Lockwood as our first forward. Let that soak in. Marinate in that.

In 2 years we're going to have several top notch, maybe even one "elite" guy in BB so I'm not worried. It took Toronto and EDM a decade of tanking to get lucky, maybe Winnipeg is the luckiest of them all (although I kind of think the hockey gods gave them Laine for how they were treated by the NHL).

Let's go back in time and rectify.  Real hot topic here.  Did anyone even know this stuff?
