Since the Canucks have come in the league we have seen the Lightning, Ducks, Flames, Oilers, Dallas, Colorado, Isles and Devils all win the cup before us. They came in the league after us.

Question is, do the Vegas Golden Knights win the cup before us?

Also Carolina.

Vegas.  Bettman and the National Hokey League will do and are pulling out all the stops to insure Vegas succeeds.  His ego and prestige is totally wrapped up in this project.  The glitz of Las Vegas associated with the NHL is too big an allure for the league. They will not let it become another Atlanta.  Success will come quickly for them as the NFL and probably the NBA are watching closely with the view of establishing teams there soon. It would be a tremendous blow if the team failed.  They have to establish a beach head quickly to win the hearts of the Vegas sports fan.  Don't you think his NBC masters would love to showcase Vegas in a run to the Cup the ratings would be very high.  They will be awarded the Cup within 5 years of operation.  America loves champions.

It's always fun to watch the tinfoil hat parade.....

I understand some people over-exaggerate and formulate the extreme... however, to assume a corporation as big as the NHL doesn't pull strings from the back to ensure their investment is protected is naive.

People have to start realizing, before NHL is a sport, it is a business.

The depth of understanding exemplified in this post provide insight into the "buisness" of hockey.  Its a cash cow, the honey milk is pure gold. Vancouver is the red headed step orca of the league. That being said, van 4 years. We will beat toronto.

Sio you believe the 30 owners conspire to help certain owners teams? I don't buy it.

How about we wait and see who they pick up for their roster before we try and make this all important decision. Knowing what their logo and locker rooms look like isn't quite enough to make the determination...

Even if their immediate roster isn't the best, they'll still probably use the expansion tag as an excuse/justification to fully rebuild.

Meanwhile, we got Eriksson till he's 37 and god knows who else Benning decides to sign in the future (seeing as he's repeatedly quoted as looking for a proven top six winger).

I say they win a cup before us... or at least until we hire a GM who acknowledges that the team doesn't have elite young talent bar Horvat and maybe Boeser and needs to properly rebuild.

Not being offensive or rude, but just out of curiosity, what is your line of profession?

Because even with small corporate, if you have ever been part of a management decision group, you will know politics exist everywhere.

NHL is a billion dollar business, and no business gets to that point without carefully orchestrating results of their investment.  I'm not saying they directly fix the games to the point Aquilini will be giving WD order to purposefully throw a game (although this extreme has existed, and still does, in many sports).  Nor am I saying 29 other GMs, and the league, conspire against the Canucks to make sure they never win a Stanley cup.

But it is common sense to realise Bettman and the big boys will execute certain procedure to protect their new investment (Las Vegas), as well as protect their project / favourite markets.  I mean this is just standard protocol of a business executive, and that is the reason Bettman is there in the first place as the lead exec. of the NHL: to overlook and prioritise each and every move in the NHL that will suit to their best interest.

It just sucks that the Canucks aren't part of this privileged group.

They don't hate us on purpose (like some believe on this board), we're just that kid left in the corner not getting the love or attention as others.

What a load of cow pies. Bettman is hired by the owners to represent the owners. Why would any owner, considering their investment, condone letting other other owners win knowing they won't be allowed to? One would think that if your tinfoil hat theorie was true Arizona would have won the cup and sevral draft lotteries. That's certainly a market that would truly benefit from a rigged system. How about Columbus? Why didn't Atlanta get these perks when they were clearly a market that needed them? Would they have allowed Edmonton to get a generational player when they are a solid market without even having to win games, let alone the cup? What benefit is there to having Chicago or Boston win cups when both are long established hockey markets? Surely Florida or Nashville would be much better choices. Why hasn't Phillie been winning the cup, considering their owner is chairman of the board of governors, and a long standing good ol boy to boot, if it's all rigged? Why Pittsburgh but not the Islanders, or St Louis, or Minnesota?

Explain that.

I fundamentally disagree with Baggins on everything.  But he's.... right.  I'm sure the league loves it if a big market team wins or does well, it means more money for the league.  But nobody would buy an NHL team if there was even a shred of actual evidence that the commissioner conspired against some of the teams.  He works for the owners, if the owners weren't happy with him there would be a new commissioner.  Every fanboy in every fanbase thinks the league/refs/media is out to get them.

Didn't take that long for Tampa Bay to get their first cup.  Florida almost did it too.

Ya, two years in Florida made the finals... jerks. But they have been hot garbage ever since.

Yes, and not only that, they are already further along in their rebuild.

You mean they've already claimed Spisa.....and Dorsett?
