Guest
I know low oil prices are bad for people working in the energy sector but on Saturday, I filled up the gas to 92 cents per litre in Vancouver. That's pretty impressive when you consider all the gas taxes in Vancouver.

You can see the results of us not properly supporting our medical device industry, its being attended to now at least, hopefully it continues. We can do a lot more of our own pharma production. We have so much more we can do in agricultural production, including secondary processing. We should have at least 1 Canadian car or truck manufacturer. We have pockets of high tech all over Canada that can be fostered, you can see all the different companies on the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters association site. But Stromer wants oil and only oil. Even though MBS and the Saudi's can tank us on a whim.

Agriculture is actually pretty good in Canada but it's hard to get people to follow that industry cause it's not cheap to get into and only other option people have is to buy land in remote areas like say around williams lake, there's a show called the wild ones but those people that live out there are three hours away from town and a lot of people wouldnt like it. Also farming and ranching are honest work, you only get what you put in.....there's no real short cuts to building pens and so on ha wasn't there a Ford manufacturer in Ontario?......before trump brought a lot of them back to the USA , just for the breaks. I agree we have some great tech companies but tech companies don't really help us.....we need people to be able to be use for real world things, can't eat tech or build a house with it........also look at how tech has helped out the everyday person, it has made a lot of people lazier and also took away jobs......also have you seen the new generation? A lot of them you take their phone away and it's like turning off their brains......ha

That's going to happen whether we're involved in the research, manufacturing etc of it or not. You can't stop progress. So do we want to re-create jobs, by encouraging investment in those areas or let another country have those (high end) jobs, tax base etc?

Progress is good but we can't make people expendable......for sure since we keep bringing more people to Canada...... I agree with investing in other industries but if you only need say five people to run a company cause the rest of the work is done by machines is that good or bad? A factory that employed say 40 people now cuts jobs to five.....that's why I say it's a double edged sword. However, we have a significant percentage of our population who retort with socialism is bad, regulations hurt companies ability to compete, and voodoo economics works. Serious debate won't happen with them.

Again, all that is going to happen whether we invest in tech, green etc industries. Easily automated jobs WILL disappear. (You already see it reducing jobs in oil and gas FWIW). As destroyer notes, that's why things like UBI, corporate taxes etc are going to need a LOT of review and change in the coming decades. So, you can either have those green, tech etc jobs... or 'none'. You can either foster growth in those areas, get ahead and be a leader... or be stuck playing catch up. Im all for more regulations but we actually need someone to force/make companies follow them...... for a lot of companies it would give everyone a even playing field big and small and force big companies to spend more on say benefits to attract people. Okay dumb question ......what's Voodoo economics? I've never heard that term before. 55 minutes ago, aGENT said: It's not really. Didn't Alberta give out grants to tech companies? Didnt one already leave Calgary? Im all for advancement but what do we do with the people that lose their jobs?..... like you said we already see it coming but how do we draw that line in the sand? Investopedia link Updated Aug 26, 2019 What Is Voodoo Economics? Voodoo economics is a derogatory phrase used by George H. W. Bush in reference to President Ronald Reagan's economic policies, which came to be known as "Reaganomics."
